About Conrad Nelke

We are at the time of life where we can be our own 'bosses' (retired engineer & English CC teacher.) Our family comes first, then friends (also 4 legged variety) followed closely by golf (him) bridge( us) reading (us); Travel (Our planes head mainly to towns where kids & friends live) Next, Remodeling--him, work--her, inspiration. Club & volunteer stuff-- him HO, her KD; TV--him, sports. her drama!

We have been married for 50 years to the same people! Both: married '59, graduated Kansas State '60, had baby, '61, baby '62; baby '63--in '64 we got a dog!! All goes well.

Conrad Nelke purchased this cabin in 1985

Why Conrad Nelke chose Payson

We wanted a place away from the valley where all of the kids and grandkids could come and be together. We found the area while visiting friends in Whispering Pines in a gorgeous snowstorm the day after a warm Thanksgiving in Phoenix. It seemed like heaven to be able to share both worlds with only a two hour ride. We wanted in! We had the shell built and completed the house ourselves. We picked chandeliers from Mexico, rocks for the fireplace from all over the country, and furnishings from family pieces, 'gently used' and even broke down and bought a lot. It works as 'eclectic to the max,' The views in this area belong to God--we just bought here so we could share them. There is a feeling in the air here that brings out the best in people which makes them happy.

What makes this cabin unique

Inviting friends here for a day or a weekend is a joy for us & them. Everyday cares fall away as the pines, oaks, and juniper give the air a certain mountain tang. Actually, The 5,400 feet elevation makes the nights 25 degrees and days 15 degrees cooler than valley temperatures. Here, we have seasons that give us soft spring rain, exciting summer electriical storms, vivid autumn leaves, and frost, snow, & earmuffs.

We never tire of seeing the glorious views of 40 miles of Rim that we share with God. Sunsets from the north deck are amazing, and the experience of watching a storm approach through the valley until the new rain finally drives you from your nest in the porch swing inside--unforgettable. We have had many memorable family reunions here--there have been two Golden Wedding celebrations, a Honeymoon--the magic is just beginning. You won't want to forget your time here. Bring your best camera.

Perfect for large family stay, with beautiful views

  • 5 of 5

Our extended family stayed here while some of us hunted elk. The house has five queen/king beds counting the wall bed, and four bunks, with three bathrooms and a nice big expandable dining table. It worked great for our large family. The picture windows and balconies looking out to the Mogollon Rim are spectacular. The driveway is quite steep with a sharp loop, but we made good use of the upper parking -- much appreciated. This is a very functional house, architected uniquely on the side of the hill, with a fun rec room, amazing views, lots of beds and details taken care of.

Great place

  • 5 of 5

We thoroughly enjoyed our fall stay at this cabin.

We were trying to figure out how many people one could actually sleep in the house and we ended up with “a lot”. We rented it for just the three of us and a dog and still found the rate quite reasonable. The deciding factor of renting such a big place was the game room. My teenager was entertained by the game room, and given a choice of bedrooms, chose the Murphy bed so he could watch TV half the night away. My husband and I enjoyed looking at the stars from the balconies. It is such a great place to relax.

We saw elk every morning and loved watching the red-headed wood peckers, hummingbirds and squirrels at play. We visited the Geode Hill trail and the river crossing parks so there was plenty to do in and around the cabin. Payson was only a short drive away as well.

We would definitely recommend this cabin.

Getting away from it all

  • 5 of 5

The views were breath taking and the house was beautiful. It was on top of the hill and private. We saw deer and elk in the area with plenty of birds and squirrels feeding on the trees. The house was well stocked with linens and towels and the kitchen had plenty of dishes, utensils and anything to make a meal. The house was somewhat outdated but perhaps that's part of the rustic charm. Feedback that I have is since there is a 120.00 non refund fee that the house would have been cleaned somewhat better before are arrival. There were cobwebs in the light fixtures in kitchen and great room as well as entryway and other area inside and outside of house. The piano had to be wiped down as the keys were very dirty. One one of the grills didn't work, so we used the other which also stopped working. The deck rails were lose too, a definite potential hazard.and the deck doors were very difficult to open and lock. Even with these issues it was still an outstanding vacation and a great family bonding experience. Thank you for the experience, we thoroughly enjoyed it. Best regards, The Hernandez family.
