Heaven on Earth
Stonington is one of the most incredible places in Maine; but what made our trip memorable was our stay at Twin Boulders. This cozy cottage has been remolded for modern comforts; but retains the charm of old world New England. The views are majestic; and the location is situated close to town and amenities. You see the moon rise and the sunset. The house is situated blocks from Sand Beach. This was one of the best vacations we ever had; and the Walker family were great hosts.
The cottage is clean, nicely furnished, and comfortable. The ocean views are stunning! A variety of islands near and far add to the interest. We passed time watching lobstermen, sailing vessels, and foraging seals that pass close by. If you forget for a moment that you are near the ocean, the foghorn on Marks Island will remind you!
Truly a gem!
Twin Boulders is the perfect cottage on the coast of Maine! The cottage itself is accurately displayed in the pictures, is very comfortable, and has everything you need for a great vacation. The location is both private and close to the beach and town. The view is breathtaking! We have visited the area for over 20 years and never tire of the view. This year we saw eagles, loads of seals, loons, and porpoises... without leaving the deck. If you can tear yourself away from the cottage, there are some nice hikes on the island. We also took a boat trip out to Seal Island to see the puffins. Our favorite meals are at the cottage... be it lobster or grilling out... because you are assured the best seat on the island and you won’t miss the fabulous sunsets! I could go on and on. Twin Boulders is a dream... can’t wait to return.
Wonderful property right on the water. Clean and very comfortable
Vacationing at Twin Boulders is a perfect "coast of Maine" experience. My husband and I recently enjoyed our 2nd visit in two years and look forward to returning next year. The cottage includes every detail stated in the description – the owners have done an exceptional job of capturing in photos the multiple assets of this cottage and its pristine location - but nothing beats being there. While we do visit both of the nearby small towns, Stonington and Deer Isle, and we often kayak various inlets, we find that invariably it is to the cottage we are eager to return. We never tire of all it provides - the views, the sea life, the home itself - and all with great peace and quiet.
In our experience, as long-time Maine renters, Twin Boulders is unmatched and we feel quite fortunate to have found it.
A Quiet Peaceful Haven
One of the natural wonders of Maine - right out the front window. Been going here for many years and wouldn't want to go anywhere else! Good location away from it all - and you get 'free' lighthouse views complete with foghorn :-)
Stonington, Maine is a quaint, working fishing village at the southern tip of Deer Isle (on eastern side of Penobscot Bay). The island, reachable by bridge, is a paradise for naturalists, birders, kayakers, sailors, artists, photographers, and anyone who wants to discover the genuine “Downeast” experience. You’ll see fishermen on their lobster boats hard at work during the summer, as they have for a century. Granite is still quarried here. Besides relaxing, things to do include nature hikes, kayaking, golf, tennis, browsing shops and art galleries, enjoying theater and live music at the restored Stonington Opera House, offering performing arts since 1912. Nearby off-island destinations: Bar Harbor, Acadia National Park, Blue Hill, Castine, Brooklin. Driving from the south, take I-95 to Augusta, Rt. 3 east from Augusta to Belfast, get on Rt. 1 north to Bucksport, then follow Rt. 15 south to the town. By plane, Bangor airport is 60 miles (2 hours by car) from Deer Isle. Portland airport is 170 miles away (4 hours by car).
Other Activities: Getting out on Penobscot Bay with a sea kayak (rentals, guides, tours, available) is a fantastic way to explore the coast.
Golf and tennis.
