About Rick Hill
I was raised in Southern California but have lived in the South, North, and Midwest U.S. San Diego is by far my favorite city in the U.S. and has been home for 19 years. I love to travel and have roamed Europe extensively. The photo is from my trip to Easter Island. I look forward to hosting travelers from around the world!
Rick Hill purchased this Cottage in 2000
Why Rick Hill chose Bay Ho
I love our quirky, quiet, suburban neighborhood home with cottage onsite that's been upgraded from lawn to garden. The cottage is close to everything, yet away from the crowds--and unlike the folks in nearby Pacific Beach, guests can always park in front of the house. ;-)
What makes this Cottage unique
I enjoyed remodeling our little cottage to make it the kind of place I would love to stay myself. I'd like to bring the privacy, quiet neighborhood, brick patio and cozy interior with me when I travel, but luggage limits are so strict nowadays. ;-)
No parties, no noise outside past 10..
Smoking outside is okay
I don't have pets either. ;-)

Far, but not too far from the madding crowd
Great spot and the cottage is a lovely secluded oasis after a day of sightseeing. Everything that you need and more is at hand. Very comfortable and Rick and family have thought very hard about what a traveller needs. Enjoyed the fig jam that awaited us and the English muffins. So thoughtful and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay here.
Backyard garden hideaway
This comfy casita has a whimsical charm and all the basic amenities one might be looking for during a short stay in town. This quiet cottage, accessible through a private gate and sidewalk along the side of Rick’s home, is nestled among flowers, shrubs, planters, and a fig tree, with a small patio area and chairs. It was a welcome place for me to rest and recharge during a weekend conference when I visited in July of 2019.
Although this is not a full-sized house with a full kitchen, there is a fridge, sink, and small countertop, along with a few cabinets, a two-person table, a coffee pot, toaster, microwave, hot plate, and dish rack. Rick had water bottles in the refrigerator and a bowl of fruit on the table, including apples from his own fruit tree in the front yard.
There is a window-mounted AC unit, but I was fine with a gentle cross breeze from the open front and back doors and the ceiling fans to circulate the air. Despite arriving on a day in the 80s—what locals seem to think of as a heat wave!—the air conditioner was not even necessary; Rick provided an oscillating fan that kept me perfectly comfy.
The kitchenette and bathroom were clean, with new tiling and a modern aesthetic, and nice wood laminate flooring throughout the rest of the space. The rest of the casita featured eclectic cottage décor, including floral-print fabrics and a seashell lamp. A dresser, closet with iron and ironing board, and table unit stocked with fun family games round out the space.
Rick was great about communicating with me, both via email and text once I shared my number with him. He took me on a thorough tour of the property when I arrived and gave me complete privacy thereafter. He is a friendly, affable man who seems to enjoy what he does and want his guests to enjoy their stay.
Charming, Clean, Well Stocked - Simply Delightful!
We were very delighted with Rick's Cozy Cottage. Immediately upon our arrival he came out to meet us and escorted us into the cottage to show us everything we needed to know about the property. Rick has stocked his clean and charming cottage with many amenities, including board games, DVDs, bagels and fruit, bathroom supplies, kitchen utensils, iron and ironing board, etc. We truly appreciated Rick's hospitality and will certainly consider his cozy cottage for possible future stays in San Diego!
The weekend we spent in BayHo was a highlight of the 2 weeks spent in Southern California. Rick was great, and it’s a quiet secluded cottage. Close to everywhere we wanted to go, and big enough to just hang out.
Very nice, clean, and private little cottage
I really enjoyed my stay. The cottage is in back with its own patio, kitchenette, and is close to highways and shopping. Rick is a great host and made sure I understood how to use everything. I would definitely come back.
Great quiet location. Well equipped and maintained.
