Overview

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 3.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Just five blocks from the Jardin, when you walk through the front door of Casa Galicia, you enter a different world - not that of colonial Mexico, as you might expect, but the world of Spain itself. Honoring their ancestors, who lived in a small town called Tui in Galicia near the border with Portugal, the owners have created a classical Spanish home that features restful white walls throughout, enlivened by splashes of color in the carefully chosen furnishings and accessories. These reflect what might have been found in a well-appointed Spanish home in the 19th Century : Spanish, Portuguese, French, and English antiques from the 17th-19th centuries and gorgeous Persian rugs as well as the maternal family's coat of arms embroidered on the dining room chairs. The extensive artwork, collected over many years by the owners, includes a painting from the owner's father's native Cuba, as well as a wonderfully acrobatic bronze sculpture by Jorge Marin and paintings by contemporary Mexican and American artists. To live in Casa Galicia is truly to live in and with a very rich history.

This 2,500 square-foot home, built in 2002 on the site of a ruined Colonial chapel, is ideally located on the boundary between the famous Centro Historico and the newer Colonia of Balcones with its superb views and easy walk to the Botanical Garden. The courtyard entry, which doubles as an off street parking area, leads to the main foyer highlighted by an antique hall table, mirror, lamp and statue of a Greek Orthodox saint that are in stark contrast to the joyful statue of an acrobat by the distinguished Mexican sculptor Jose Marin. In keeping with the home's origins as a chapel, a baptismal font has been used as a hand-basin in the half bath that is tucked behind the entry.

Reflecting its special combination of old and new, Casa Galicia offers a welcoming living and dining area, each with its own character but open to one another. The living room, with its large non-vented cantera fireplace (which will keep you very warm in the evening) is perfect for lounging and chatting in the evening. As you spend time there you will begin to notice the details—a unique 17th-century Spanish painting on wood of St. Jose (Joseph) and a pair of authentic Conquistador's spurs, among many other wonderful things.

Casa Galicia features three bedroom suites, each with its own private bath and dressing area. The master bedroom, with its specially-crafted Portuguese-style four-poster king bed, is enlivened by a beautifully constructed boveda ceiling. The master bath features double sinks, granite counter-tops and a unique walk-in shower and soaking tub, reminiscent of ancient Roman baths. The second bedroom, separated from the living room ancient wooden doors rescued from the ruined chapel, contains a queen bed framed by an 18th-century Venetian headboard and covered with an antique Susani bedspread. The third bedroom features a pair of unique Mexican wrought-iron and brass twin beds. Closet space in all three bedrooms borders on the huge, far more than enough for all guests except those who arrive with steamer trunks (but then those days of Colonial Mexico and Baroque Spain are long gone).

A special delight of Casa Galicia is its extensive outdoor living space. The ground-floor interior patio, easily accessed from the dining room or the queen bedroom, brings ample sunlight into the first-floor rooms, but its huge and very old Mesquite tree also offers shade from the mid-day sun. On the second floor there are two balcony terraces that overlook the first-floor patio and put you in touch with the leaves of the old Mesquite. One of these opens out from the hallway between the sitting/TV room and the master bedroom; the other is directly off the master suite and offers privacy for your morning coffee or evening cocktail. Finally, there is the huge rooftop patio (nearly 600 square feet) with its wonderful views of Centro (and, yes, you have a clear, unobstructed view of the Parroquia), the Presa de Allende, and the mountains beyond.

Casa Galicia's rooftop deck is a superb spot to experience San Miguel's glorious sunsets. An added feature of the rooftop deck is the newly built grilling kitchen. This area includes a refrigerator, large sink, and a 38' wide professional grill top surrounded by granite countertops. The cooking area and adjacent dining table are both covered by a large ramada that will shade you from the sun and protect you from all but the worst rainstorms.

Speaking of cooking, if you love to cook (and actually intend to do so while on vacation), you will appreciate the large galley kitchen and adjacent panty. The six-burner gas stove actually has an oven broiler (a rarity in Mexico). The kitchen also features extensive counter space to prepare your food, a large, nee top-and-bottom refrigerator/freezer, an extensive supply of top-quality cooking gear, and a large inventory of dishes, glassware and serving pieces. An added bonus of the kitchen is the large window over the sink looking out into the entry patio, which brings ample sunlight into the kitchen, making it a happy environment for cooking or hanging out.

We are just 2.5 blocks from the Ramirez Market, with flowers, produce and almost anything else you may need. Then it's just another three short blocks to the Jardin, the epicenter of San Miguel's civic life.

About Diane or Larry

Throughout our marriage, Susan and I have enjoyed traveling widely and collecting wonderful pieces from throughout the world, particularly Europe. Our passion for collecting has now become a shop featuring European antiques though by vocation I am a physician; Susan owns a bridge club and is a Life Master. Together we share a passion for beautiful things that have their own story to tell and have imbued this passion into transforming Casa Galicia into a beautiful and welcoming home.

Diane or Larry purchased this house in 2010

Why Diane or Larry chose Guanajuato State

Casa Galicia is the culmination of a journey that started with a high school sophomore. Our daughter was invited by one of her co-boarders at the Hockaday School in Dallas to spend a week at her family's home in San Miguel.

Upon her return she told us we must go to San Miguel since it was exactly the type of place that we would enjoy. One year later my wife, a close friend and I traveled to San Miguel. Within 48 hours we lucked upon a wonderful realtor who understood exactly what we were looking for. He worked diligently until he found the house with the right 'bones' and great wonderful views. Though it's an easy few minutes' stroll to the Jardin, Casa Galicia is just far enough away to avoid the noise and congestion that makes many locations in Centro less than tranquil.

We often design interiors for our store's clients. Given our experience, Susan and I knew immediately that we could really make our discovery a wonderful place from which to enjoy the charms of San Miguel.

What makes this house unique

One of our favorite areas of the house is the roof top terrace from where we enjoy cocktails and grill in the newly-installed outdoor kitchen and wetbar.

My family is originally from a little town called Tui, near the border with Portugal, in the region of Galicia, Spain. We decided to honor this heritage by doing a classical Spanish interior with white walls and lots of color as one would see in many parts of Spain. This is clearly in contrast to the Spanish colonial style seen in many parts of Mexico. The furnishings and accessories reflect what might have been found in a Spanish home in the 19th Century: embroidered on the dining room chairs is my mother's family coat of arms. There are Spanish, Portugese, French and English antiques which have been in the family for several generations. The art work, classical and modern, which adorns the walls has been collected over many years and even includes a painting from my father's native Cuba. Mexico is clearly represented by several artists but, most prominently by a wonderful acrobatic sculpture, by Jorge Marin, which greets all who enter the home.

On the edge of the Centro Historico--you are in Centro in one block, then it's an easy 5-7 minute stroll to the Jardin, the epicenter of San Miguel. Very convenient secure off-street parking if you have a car. Maid and gardener come three times per week. Cook or chef available per request at additional expense.

Magnificent!

  • 5 of 5

I just returned from a three week visit to San Miguel de Allende where my friend I stayed at this incredibly warm and elegant home located on a quiet street within centro but just far enough removed to provide for serenity and incredible views of the city on the expansive roof top flower-filled patio with a glass of wine after long days of exploring. I am a person who is very sensitive to my surroundings and from the moment I walked into this home I felt as though I had been transported into a "home away from home." The entire house is beautifully cared for and filled with a variety of art-filled comfortable areas for relaxing with a good book, a good movie, or a group of friends. The bedrooms were beautifully appointed and provided for wonderful nights of restful sleep. The housekeeper, Lydia, came to the house most days and, while she does not speak English, was extremely kind and clearly wanted to do what she could to make our stay comfortable. As you can tell, I cannot say enough wonderful things about this home and I wish to thank the owners and the property rental contact person, Diane, for additionally adding value to what was a truly memorable stay. I can't wait to come back!

Loved 1st stay in mexico

  • 5 of 5

Our week long stay was simply wonderful!!

First time to visit Mexico.... We walked in through huge iron gates from the bricked Mexican, narrow streets into a heavenly abode. Each room was beautifully decorated. The courtyard, patios, and the rooftop terrace were awesome. Could sit on the terrace and view Mexico for hours. Loved my trip to Mexico, and would definitely chose this exact home again.

Second Time Visitor

  • 5 of 5

I just returned from San Miguel for my second stay in this elegant but most comfortable home. You know you have arrived to a special space with the interior courtyard setting a welcoming tone. Every room in the home allows the beautiful nature outside to be viewed and enjoyed inside. The rooftop terrace provided us the perfect cocktail setting. The views made you feel you were in an authentic, European setting. If the spacious rooms and beautiful furnishings weren't enough, you are greeted daily by the most pleasant host Lidia. Her warm, Mexican smile makes you know you are "her guest". Her homemade breakfasts proved to be the best way to start our day!

The brief 10-12 minute walk to the center of the village made you feel you were among the locals but don't be fooled! The restaurants are 5-star quality and could rival any large cities line up.

Sam Miguel's art galleries, architecture, multiple tour options, shopping and dining are just a few of the must dos! We took a cooking class while there with authentic Mexican ingredients! What a treat to see, hear, smell and taste their real food! "Buen Provecho"

Do not miss a chance to stay at this lovely home and experience the charm and magic of San Miguel. It will not be my last visit.

Beautiful house, wonderful stay

  • 4 of 5

Casa Galicia is an exquisitely furnished home with noteworthy artwork throughout. My friends and I enjoyed our week and a half in the villa to the fullest. The roof terrace, with its views of centro, commanded our presence each morning for coffee and each evening for cocktails. The gardener kept a myriad of plants and flowers in primo condition and the housekeeper kept the place tidy and our laundry clean. Kudos to a well run household..

Birthday celebration at it's best !

  • 5 of 5

Every expectation and anticipation my husband and I had about traveling to Mexico was surpassed. Our accommodations here in this Spanish style villa could not have been better. The location is SO convenient. The decor inside and out is spectacular and we felt welcomed when we walked in the door. (The pictures listed here are proof !). Although I don't speak Spanish, communication was not an issue as most of the people we encountered spoke at least some English. (Now I want to take a Spanish course and head back to San Miguel !) Lydia took very good care of us with her talent of cooking and cleaning. Thank you Lydia ! There is so much to do in this lovely city and we plan to make another visit ! Our decision is easy......we will stay in this beautiful villa again !

ME

First, NOT my first visit or rental in San Miguel nor thru VRBO. A seasoned 16 year visitor/renter, we had our first unhappy visit in this house. It photographs well and has lovely furniture. While previous comments were glowing of Lydia, we did not find that. The sink in the kitchen had build up around faucets and edges and needed a scrubbing. Silverware drawer dirty, needed a good wiping out. Coffeemaker had coffee buildup and residue from more than a weeks use.Toaster was covered with crumbs, microwave was smeary around handle and door. The worse, was the white dish drainer thick with black mold in its groves where plates and glasses rested and the tray had gunk and hair. Pictures were emailed to the owner ! Sponge used in kitchen was very used and left in the sink full of water and whatever, after all uses by Lydia until we removed it to the storage room and put out a new clean one telling Lydia to only use new one and not leave it wet in the sink. The W/D was one unit and did not work properly. Both Lydia and Abraham, the local manager, admitted that it did not work and needed to be replace and the owner also knew. Lydia, who only came three times a week, would leave our towels and sheets in the dryer for the two days until she returned. Towels would smell so sour that when you used them, you almost puked. Sheets were a wrinkled mess plus when we wanted to use the W/D, it was always crammed full of damp stuff. Never got clothes dry and would have to wring them out by hand and hang them on the roof to dry.

Whole house was dirty in corners and under the beds, Furniture was thick with dust build up! You could drag your finger thru heavy dust everywhere. Roof top patio leaked with pouring water, you could not sit under it during a rain. July is rainy season with thunderstorms every afternoon. Water leaked onto both stairways, and sat on floor between the dinning and living room where there was s strong odor of mold which made for headache and stinging eyes. The drawers in twin bed bath were full of someones black curly hair and dead bugs. Water leaked from faucet into drawer in master bath vanity getting all my makeup and brushes wet. Plumber came but it kept leaking our entire stay. We spent the entire two weeks complaining about Lydia not cleaning.

Plus had to pay a $98 damage insurance but were not reimbursed for non of our inconveniences ! Person next door has 5 fighting Cocks who crowed all day, drive was blocked repeatedly!

Owner's Response: We were unfortunatly unable to satisfy this traveler dispite numerous attempts by me, the owner, my state side manager, or the local manger. I believe that previous comments are more representative of traveler's experiences at Casa Galicia. A new washer and dryer has been purchased. House has been throughly cleaned. I hope that future stays in SMA or elsewhere by this traveler are more satisfactory.
