Description

Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday apartment in West - Hvassafell II

4 comfortable up to 6. Two Bedroom, Northern Lights, Mountain View, I

Excellent apartment on the first floor of the house in the countryside, on a farm. The house is located in a beautiful and peaceful valley called Norðurárdalur in Borgarfjörður, 154 km from Keflavík International Airport (1 hour and 55 minutes drive). From the borders of Reykjavík city, the drive is about 1 hour and 15 minutes. The apartment was renovated in 2008. It is 70 square meters of size and is well equipped, i.e. a television, free WiFi, microwave, coffee machine and a washer. Beddings and towels included. There is one bedroom and a living room with a pull-out sofa. Extra mattresses and beddings can be provided for a reasonable price.

Why choose West Iceland:

West Iceland is the mecca of the Icelandic sagas, such as Egils saga Skallagrímssonar, Eiríkssaga and Laxdæla. It has many historical sites and there is a possibility of guided tours around such sites. Birdlife in the area is rich. The nature in the area is spectacular, with its mountains, craters, waterfalls, lakes, valleys and magical lava. Furthermore, it is one of the best areas in Iceland to view Northern Lights, during the fall and wintertime.

Historical locations in the area:

Reykholt (30 min driving distance):

The heritage of Iceland's greatest medieval writer, poet, scholar and statesman, Snorri Sturluson (1179-1241), is rooted in Reykholt in the west of Iceland.

Eiríksstaðir (30 min driving distance):

Most evidence suggest that Eirik the Red´s son Leif Ericsson 'Leif the Lucky' was born at Eirkisstadir. Leifur became the first Europian to set foot in North America, which he named Vinland, in the year 1000

About Arny Helgadottir

Mrs. Árný Helgadóttir, Mr. Magnús Leópoldsson and our family welcome you to our farm on Hvassafell II.

I am a MSc nurse and a certified guide and my husband is a realtor. For the past 10 years we have been establishing farming and tourism, which is our interest, as we are both born and raised on a farm. Our three daughters and grandchildren are also interested in countryside living and as a family we enjoy spending time together on the farm.

Arny Helgadottir purchased this apartment in 2004

Why Arny Helgadottir chose Iceland

We both grew up on a farm, and it has been our lifelong dream to establish our own farm. We were interested in merging farming with tourism, to give our visitors the opportunity to experience the Icelandic farming tradition, as well as the possibility to “refill their batteries” in the peaceful nature of Borgarfjörður. The location is perfect, as it is not too far from Reykjavík city, and yet the area is quiet, so it is an ideal place to experience the calming influences of nature.

What makes this apartment unique

First and foremost, we purchased this property because of its beautiful mountain view. Furthermore, the land is optimal for raising sheep and horses. Nearby, there are a variety of hiking and horseback riding paths, which is preferable for our interests, for we enjoy hiking and horseback riding in the beautiful Icelandic nature. Especially enjoyable are the Northern Lights, for this area turned out to be a unique site for viewing them, during the fall and wintertime.

Wonderful farm experience

  • 5 of 5

My friends and I thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Arny's farmhouse. Arny was very kind and accommodating and the apartment was very clean, quiet and comfortable. The area is very beautiful and expansive and is a good base for exploring western Iceland and surrounding areas. We hiked behind the farm house, picked blueberries and enjoyed feeding one of the little lambs. We enjoyed seeing and learning about all the sheep and horses. I would highly recommend staying here.

Wonderful place to stay

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I had a wonderful stay here while in Iceland. It was the perfect place to see quite a lot of Western Iceland, along with portions of the south coast. In one week, we saw the Vatnses Peninsula, the Snaelfasness Peninsula, Thingvellir, all of the Golden Circle, and we went all the way down to Vik. Not to mention all the great hiking and scenery close by in Bifrost and Borgarnes. The house itself is beautiful, situated on a farm with lots of horses and sheep. Everything was clean and well taken care of. We cooked breakfast every morning in the kitchen and packed our lunches to go. I can't recommend it highly enough. Thanks, Arny!

magical week

  • 5 of 5

Staying on Arny's farm was unforgettably beautiful. We are a family of four, stayed in the lower apartment for a week in July. The apartment felt like home, was clean, and perfectly equipped. Everything was according to the photos. Grocery shopping was no problem. My daughter and I loved to walk around the farm, pet the horses, and bottle-feed the little sheep Ami. We went on day trips to Snaefelsnes, the Westfjordes, and Husafell. And Arny is a wonderful host and impressive person.

Highlight of our vacation

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 stayed at Arny's place for 3 nights. Upon arrival, Arny was an excellent host. She greeted us, walked through the property together, gave us advice and tips about the area and answered all of our questions. The property is ideally located for sightseeing many areas of Iceland with ease. The apartment was immaculate, had all the amenities and was very, very clean. Our children aged 5 and 7 were crying when we had to leave because they enjoyed being on the farm so much. They spent their entire time outside looking at the lamb, sheep and horses. Arny was such a great host and was very patient with my children considering they wanted to be by her side 24/7 ! Arny brought my children to brush the horses, allowed them to feed a lamb from a bottle and drove us around her property to feed a wounded swan. Arny has such a warm heart for her guests and a genuine love for her farm/ animals. Our stay was so enjoyable that when people ask us what was the highlight of our trip, without hesitation the entire family states it was our stay and time at Arny's farm. We will definitely be back ! Thanks for the wonderful memories !

At Home in Iceland

  • 5 of 5

Spent a week at this property last summer and the memories grow fonder with time. From this location were able to visit the rugged Westfjords, the West peninsula and Reykolt area, Reykjavik and along the south coast as far as the Jökulsárlón Iceberg Lagoon. We hiked to the top of the Iceland's largest waterfall, walked on glaciers, visited several museums, and on and on.

Spending a week in the same location made us feel part of Iceland rather than the tourists we are. The apartment has quaint views, including birdlife and arctic fox right in your front yard. Arny was a fantastic host, took us horseback riding and pointed us to hikes and hot springs and other wonders that are off the guide book radar.

The apartment itself felt like home and with grocery and restaurants near by we were always stocked with food and beverage.

Lovely stay!

  • 5 of 5

Everything was wonderful and Arny was so hospitable. We stayed in the upper unit with wonderful views, including from the well-eqipped kitchen. The farm was easy to drive to and centrally located to explore the Borgarnes area. A perfect start for our visit to Iceland.
