Photos and Description of this 6 bedroom holiday home in Kattskill Bay - Tapawingo

Enjoy an amazing 100-year-old Adirondack Camp

Tapawingo is an amazing 102-year old Adirondack Camp. It is ideal for larger families because it sleeps 12 and has lots of nooks and crannies. A main house, a boat house, an ice house, and a garage on a 1.2 acre private wooded lot with a 350-foot lake front all exude charm, history, and a fun time. You can choose rest and relaxation or activities and adventure. There is no cable TV (there is a DVD player and television), but you can eat lunch on the dock, watch sunsets from the front porch, curl up in the hammock with a good book, and climb Buck Mountain from down the street. This is a great place to swim, ski, and go tubing, canoeing, or kayaking. When you approach the house from the dead-end street, you first see a spectacular garden built around a pond and fountain. The lighting at night is dramatic. You enter the house at the kitchen. Above the kitchen is a suite with two bedrooms one with two single beds and one with a double bed and a single bed. There are also two bathrooms, one of which is in the larger bedroom. One bathroom has a tub; the other a shower. The fully-equipped kitchen has a refrigerator, and a separate freezer, a stove, a dishwasher, and a kitchen table beneath a hand-painted mural. The laundry room has a washer and a dryer. At one end of the magnificent 21 x 29 living room, which has a 26 peaked ceiling and a fireplace at one end, a door goes to a second suite with two bedrooms and a sleeping porch. One bedroom has a double bed; the other a single bed. The sleeping porch has two single beds. This suite has a bathroom with an old-fashioned claw-foot tub. Above these bedrooms is a 3-room suite with a queen bed in the bedroom, a tub and shower in the bathroom, and an office with a gorgeous view. There is also a large ping pong porch. Although the dining room table expands to seat 8 comfortably, in nice weather we eat on the front porch, which has a wonderful view towards Long Island and magnificent sunsets. The table on the front porch can expand to seat 16. After dinner, walk down to the fire pit for smores or sunset watching. The pit is surrounded by log seating for an evening of telling stories. The living room contains a large wood-burning fireplace and an antique English bar billiards table. Bar billiards is played from one end, unlike pool or billiards, which need room all around the table. A game closet has board games, cards, and puzzles. A flagstone patio off the dining room has a gas grill. A slip by the boathouse can accommodate your boat; an aluminum canoe is available for your use. The large dock has a picnic table and lots of room for sunning and swimming. Tapawingo is only 15 minutes from Lake George Village and 25 minutes from Glens Falls and the Great Escape. Several golf courses and some great restaurants are within a 10-minute drive. The property has a guest house that has been rented separately for the entire season.

About Larry Stone

Larry Stone's Lake George roots go back more than 100 years to when his grandfather bought a house at the bottom of the Top of the World Road, his aunt bought the house next door, and Larry’s uncle bought the house next to that one. Larry grew up spending much of the summer at Lake George.

Larry and Lois Stone moved from New Jersey to Nashville, Tennessee, where Larry co-founded Rutledge Hill Press, best known for publishing Life’s Little Instruction Book. Although they were 1,200 miles from Lake George, they summered there every year in the family houses.

When the Stones bought Tapawingo, there was still a button under the dining room rug that would ring a bell to let the maid know the next course should be served. There was a bell system that summoned the maid to the bedrooms from her room above the kitchen. There was still evidence of a formal garden, but several years of neglect had taken its toll.

The Stones drilled a 450-foot well. The ice house, where in the early 1900s ice cut from Lake George would be stored to keep the ice box cool the following summer, was renovated as a small gym. Over the years they added several patios, built a new garden and fountain, and upgraded the guest house. A new bathroom with a Jacuzzi was added to the master suite of the main house. A book nook has been enjoyed by many.

Why Larry Stone chose Lake George Area

Since 1993, Tapawingo has become truly a “place of joy” (the meaning of the word in Ojibwe/Chippewa or Haida or Cree or maybe all of them). It had been a place where the former owner would become a bit tipsy by early afternoon and would not allow friends or relatives to stay over night.

Since 1993, Tapawingo has been a place where each summer between 70 and 80 guests would stay anywhere from one night to a week. Children and adults would play and swim, swing over the lake from a 30-foot rope swing, and tell stories around a fire pit at night. Annual events included hikes up Buck Mountain, a formal dinner on the dock, and a swim across the lake to Rockhurst. Guests came from Australia, China, Guatemala, England, Korea, Norway, Canada, Afghanistan, as well as from all around the U.S.

We hope that Tapawingo will continue to be a place of joy for all who come to enjoy its charm, history, and amazing views.
