Cartagena's main attraction, Historic Old Town which is surrounded by the city wall. The main entrance is the Clock Tower building. The walled city includes the neighborhoods Centro, San Diego, Getsemaní and the modern part La Matuna. The oldest part of Cartagena is around Plaza Trinidad in Getsemaní.
Cartagena's 500-hundred year-old coralstone forts and great parts of its walled city are admirably intact and represent some of the finest examples of civil and military architecture of the Spanish colonial times.
The Castillo de San Felipe is a fortress designed by the Dutch engineer Richard Carr and built in 1657 by the Spanish for protection against pirates while shipping gold out to Europe.
Close to the San Felipe fortress is the 150m high La Popa hill, which offers great views over Cartagena and the harbor area. The 17th century Santa Cruz monastery is here, which has a beautifully restored courtyard and a fine image of the Virgin of La Candelaria.
Museums: The Palacio de la Inquisición (Palace of Inquisition) is where the Spanish Inquisition tortured, judged and convicted men accused of crimes against religion. It is situated in 'Plaza de Bolivar' in the historic center.
The Gold Museum is free and worthwhile. It's also air-conditioned which provides a nice break from the heat.
Churches: Almost all churches in the historic center are worth visiting, especially Iglesia de San Pedro Claver, in honor of the priest St. Pedro Claver, who was the first saint of the new world for his work with slaves; La Catedral, near Plaza de Bolivar and the Iglesia de Santo Domingo.
I have been in the Real Estate business for over 30 years in NYC and now in Cartagena, Colombia. We take pride in our properties and are responsive to any of our renters needs. Since we local, we deal with our guests directly – from key exchanges, to cleaning, to repairs, and anything in between. All of our properties are fully furnished and have all the amenities of home!
The Owner purchased this condo in 2010
In balance, this is a great choice for most travelers. German answered all of our questions and was re-assuring that we're dealing.. The unit was as described and pictured in VRBO. It's in a great location with 5-min taxi ride to the historical area and within an exclusive part of town (Bocagrande and to the east Castillogrande). We felt very good and safe in the area and in this building. There were mostly families, Colombian or from other latin countries but few if any Americans. This actually is one of the reasons we chose Cartagena since few of us have discovered it yet so it still has the local flavor and originality.
Every one entering the building has to pass through the security at the first floor, before being allowed on the upper floor which is where you register and receive a wristband serving as your entry pass/access. Because of this, we never had any concerns about safety or security. We would have given it higher ratings if not for a few issues:
1. There is no hot water in the showers in this unit and I expect the entire building. This is because the building itself had very little water pressure and with no pressure in the lines there is no hot water (on-demand water heater). On occasion, late in the evening for 3-4 minutes warm but not hot water became avail, presumably because water use in the rest of the building was low. As a result, our morning showers were cold water.
2. There is NO dryer and washer
The on-site folks who responded to our issues, did what they could but there is not much else they can do when the water problem is structural.
The owner, German Ramos, went out of his way to be of great assistance to my wife and myself during two different stays. During the first stay he met my wife at almost 2:00 AM after her flight from Bogota to make sure that she could get into the apartment and that everything worked. During our second stay he put us into a different apartment on a much higher floor (with an even better view). The apartments were clean and neat and contained all that we expected. The only thing we missed was adequate hot water but this is a common issue almost everywhere in Colombia.
We will certainly check with Mr. Ramos to see if his higher floor unit is available during our next visit to Cartagena. I recommend that anyone planning on going there and using this web site to check for available apartments give strong consideration to these units (17th and 36th floor).
The apartment was a disappointment, upon arrive the toilet seat was missing in the bathroom, NO HOT WATER, TV was broken, Phone was broken ,stained pillow case. Unable to hang clothes in the closet because they were used for storage, had to pay 35,000 cop to get keys, the beds were very hard, 5 inch prison mattress on a decorative wooden frame, electrical outlet hanging out of kitchen wall with exposed wires, walls in all rooms were dirty and scuffed .
Plus to apartment was nice building and location. but for the money we paid many better option are available
