About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2.5 Baths, (Sleeps 6-8)

The location of Barcadere provides a perfect example of the Brac's beautiful and diverse shoreline. Located on prime West End diving/snorkeling location, a short path from the house leads to a small cove called the Barcadere, (how the house got its name) carved out of the molten lava rock by the Caribbean Sea. The cove is about 12x30 feet and 10 feet deep and is protected from the ocean’s waves. A swimming pool ladder provides an easy entrance and exit for exquisite snorkeling, diving or just swimming for all ages. Two sea-pools surge in rhythm, each supporting a unique set of aquatic inhabitants, connected by underwater channels to the Barcadere. You’ll notice the sound of the shore itself, gurgling, softly resonating under you, literally breathing with the sea. The magic of this porous shoreline begins.

To the west the expansive, easy to stroll solid rock shore leads you to a larger, wilder cove powering the blow holes where the seas are funneled under the rock to erupt in wave geysers, sometime 20’ high! Further on, the shore adds sand and shells for beach-combing, and then finally to a rare, natural pure sand beach where sea turtles lay their eggs each year.

To the east the shore offers tidal pools and an easy walk to the cut, a man made inlet cut into the ironshore. Originally created to shelter boats, this natural saltwater 'swimming pool' is now used by swimmers, snorkelers and divers to access deepwater diving and snorkeling.

Directly in front of the house, approximately 100 yards off shore, is the coveted dive site of the Captain Keith Tibbitts...a Russian frigate sunken to provide an exceptional artificial reef. It is only diveable Russian military sunken vessel in the Western Hemisphere. In addition, about 50 yards to the left of the Barcadere is another sunken vessel used as a diving/snorkeling destination, with an abundance of sea life, including sting rays, sea turtles and multitudes of coral reef fish.

In the evening just sit back on the patio and catch the most wonderful sunsets you will ever see. Each one unique with the various tropical cloud formations that illuminate the sky in reds, pinks and purples until it eventually succumbs to total darkness, illuminating the solar system in a spectacular way.

This special property is very handy to the airport, grocery store, gift shops, restaurant, bank, liquor store and doctors' offices. Like to explore? Go to the bat caves, take the parrot walk, find ‘Blackfoot’, our neighborhood iguana, check out the light house on the bluff where you might have a sighting of the brown booby bird, hike up and into Peter's Cave where islanders went to survive the great hurricane of 1932, or go to the recreation park just a few minutes’ walk from the house. The area offers an abundance of natural wonders sure to delight guests of all ages.

The house has been privately enjoyed by our family since 1978. It has recently been completely refurnished and refitted to make your visit easy! The set-up is simple, you begin to unwind as soon as you cross the threshold. There are two small adjoining bedrooms on the ground level, and a separate large master suite with full bath and deck on the second level. The master suite has an outside entrance and is not connected to the downstairs bedrooms. Our island born partner Derwin Scott meets your flight. The house is spotless, the linens fresh, the kitchen is equipped with all the utensils needed, connected to a great room with spectacular panoramic views.

Perfect for Divers and families!

It made me think...THIS is what I missed out on not being a surfer in the seventies. It felt like a well loved older beach bungalow WITHOUT any annoying, precious Home and Garden pretensions.

It was so well organized, e.g. large, thick beach towels stacked on a table by the side door that leads out to cement patio and gravel area, to seating areas with amazing views, to the laundry line that was always in use by my husband, sister and me (with dive gear drying), and every bit of that side shaded by a large, over-arching Seagrape tree--you could sit there any time of day, in the breeze coming off the ocean steps away, and stay cool.

While we were there the winds were unusually up the whole time. There were white caps on the ocean out side the reef, and inside too, some days. But my husband and I are strong enough swimmers. We dove every day, either from the Barcadere ladder or from the Buccaneer pool a half block east. We then snorkeled out to the nearest mooring ball, dropped down and dove rest of way along finger reefs back to inlet and ladder at Barcadere. We dove once with Brac Shack (great people!), but really, when you wake up every morning and find all the dive boats moored out in front of your house, well, why would I pay them when I can just swim out? Oh, you DO have to tow a diver's flag at all times, and considering all the dive boats that utilize this area, seems a no-brainer. You can rent that too, at Brac Shack. To rent tanks, you get one at a time and have to return it to get another, but they are literally a five minute drive away, so no big whoop there.

You do have to carry the ladder to the Barcadere inlet each time you dive and pull it out after. It's a regular, one sided aluminum ladder like you might use to paint your house, not hard to carry or put in/out, just make sure you feel physically capable, which if you're a diver, you will.

As other's have mentioned the upstairs master bedroom gets very hot in the afternoon and does not cool down easily even with the a.c. set to seventy five two hours before bed. I wish their Ductless mini-split ac unit--there was one on the wall--had actually worked. Instead there was a window unit. We managed . . .

My sister used the downstairs bedroom, one without ac blowing directly on bed, and was comfy. All beds very comfy! Kitchen, living-room really roomy; lots of screened windows. Bathrooms perfectly serviceable. We all can't wait to come back!

Quiet with Excellent access to ocean

  • 5 of 5

This was our second trip to Brac & we decided to try the North shore. We stayed at Barcadere for 2 relaxing weeks. Snorkeling was fun with easy access to the water. The variety of fish & corral ensured we would go out again and again.

The house is within walking distance of the Market and Star Island Restaurant. We even walked up to Billy’s for the Backyard Farmers Market on Saturday. Of course we had to stop to pick up food at Barry’s Golden Jerk! Excellent pork & chicken!!

We are not resort people so this place was a wonderful escape.

Bracers are friendly and always helpful.

We rented a car for a day to play tourist. We went up to the Southeast beach hunting rocks. Walked through the parrot preserve and only came away with mosquito bites. A stop to see Tenson & Starrie at NIM Things was a treat. Thanks for the introduction to swanky.

Having an outside entrance to the bedroom created some problems during a couple of rainstorms. But again the view from our bed every morning was paradise.

I have dietary restrictions so food is a concern. We had hoped to get fresh fish but were disappointed again. All meat in the stores is frozen. I will have to pack more snacks next time.

The one fly in the ointment are the roosters going off at ungodly hours. This made sleep difficult the first few days.We live on a farm but our roosters wait for sunrise!

We are hoping to return and if the Barcadere is available.....

Did not want to leave ever!

This wonderful house was home from the moment we walked in. After a very long day of travelling from the Uk we were delighted with this special place. We are a family of five with 3 adult kids 21 and 18. A perfect place not only to relax and escape from the madness of life but to explore the ocean with perfect diving and snorkelling in the garden as we all referred to the safe cove on the iron shore outside. The house was very relaxed in every way and so many items are left for convenience especially towels ( silly maybe but so handy not to need to pack). Just a short walk up the iron shore and you can more easily access the water by the "Buccaneer " a cut out pool with a ladder. We visited the Bluff and some of the caves on the island and also "Nims" souvenir shop at spot bay ( thank you previous family tip) and met Tennyson Scott a bit of a legend who told us so many cool stories. This island is special as time has stayed still in many ways loved not having a TV but great WiFi so could connect to the outside world as and when. Star restaurant great to eat at and easy to pre order for collection as liked staying in and playing games. Also Pizza by airport very nice and do deliver. So peaceful so quiet and we are all now very sad we are back in the U.K. Saving for next visit though. Thank you Joanne and family for sharing your family home a place of cherished memories for us Bullens too now.

Perfect spot for your snorkeling or diving vacation

  • 5 of 5

We stayed at the Barcadere with our family of 7, from ages ranging from 65 to 13. Every member of our family had a wonderful time. The house is large enough for a larger family to have space and not feel crowded. The master suite is very nice, comfortable bed, away from rest of house to give privacy. We snorkeled all over the island but the snorkeling right in front of the house is the best. Even my elderly parents were able to snorkel for the first time in the protected cove. If you have time, checking out the caves in a nice way to spend sometime. I would say a must is visiting NIMS things down in spot bay and talking to Mr. Scott and his wife. She taught my kids how to thatch and we loved hearing his stories about growing up on the island. Good restaraunts at the captains table and star restaraunt. There are not really sandy beaches on this island, but you can get a local fisherman to take you over to little cayman and visit point of sand beach, pink sand and beautiful. The wifi at the house worked well, good location very close to the airport and stores.
