1. Went here for my 60th birthday celebrations and it was wonderful. I’ve stayed at some of the most luxurious hotels in the world but Makana is just something else... The home is incredible and the staff make the experience life changing. The team at exceptional villas helped arrange a reggae band and Jamaican bbq for my birthday and also included a family photoshoot as a present... it was a very special time. Makana definitely made me believe that life does not end at 60!!!We will be back next year!
I love Makana! The staff were so amazing...we miss them!!! Emma at Exceptional Villas told me all about her stay here and she was right about everything... I fell in love with Makana, the staff and the beautiful setting. It exceeded my expectations. Makana truly is a special place... My family and I will find it hard to go anywhere else.
Just home from an incredible weeklong stay at Makana with my mom and sisters to celebrate my 30th birthday! Makana is beautiful… From the staff, beachfront location (waking up with a view of the ocean is heaven!), the décor gorgeous and the meals were just out of this world! The staff went above and beyond to make sure our stay was special…they are the most professional, friendly and helpful group of people I have ever met. They always made sure we were smiling! We are already planning a trip back for early next year…it cannot come soon enough. Emma and Noreen at Exceptional Villas were so helpful with all of our questions and requests. They were a dream to work with! Would highly recommend- 10/10!!!
It was a beautiful piece of heaven. Could not ask for a better holiday. Staff made our stay even more enjoyable-could not do too much for us. Food was delicious. We had dinner all over the beautiful property adding a lot to our experience. We are looking forward to a return visit in a few years.
Jamaica which is the third largest island in the Caribbean is a wonderful luxuriant tropical paradise. As well as having great beaches, a vibrant culture, incredible scenery, lively music and wonderful food, Jamaica is without a doubt the friendliest of all the Caribbean islands.
Jamaica is crossed by a range of mountain in the centre of the island reaching 2256m in height at the Blue Mountain peak. The Blue Mountains span some twenty eight miles and they dominate the eastern side of Jamaica and it is here that the famous Blue Mountain Coffee beans are grown.
There is great scenery and walking in the Blue Mountain however most visitors to Jamaica come for the wonderful weather and the beaches. There are many other activities to be enjoyed such as a walk up the incredible waterfall at Dune’s River, historical tours of some wonderful old plantations houses and walking around Shaw’s Botanical Gardens. Then there is the wonderful Jamaican food to be enjoyed which is a fusion of different cultures and so often can be enjoyed to the sounds of distinctive and eclectic music which is a great tradition in Jamaica started by the King of Reggae Bob Marley.
You can make 10 trips to Jamaica and visit 10 different places and each time you will return home with a kaleidoscope of different memories; the beaches, the sea, the reefs, the dolphins, the cliffs, the rivers, the horses, the mountain and the waterfalls. Oh and not to forget the Rum!
Most of our luxury vacation rentals in Jamaica are located to the north and west coast which is also where the most fabulous beaches are located. Here you will find exquisitely blue waters and some of the best diving in the world as well as some great golf courses. The main areas are Montego Bay, Negril where you will find a 7 mile long beach with pearl white sands and clear shallow waters and Ocho Rios but we do also have some wonderful villas rentals close to the capital Kingston in Strawberry Hill and other more remote parts of the island.
Driving time from the Montego Bay airport to Makana is approximately 60 minutes. 5 minute walk to Discovery Bay, 25 minutes via driver to Ocho Rios. Discovery Bay is an incredible turquoise body of water that has attracted some of Jamaica’s most visionary homeowners.
Enclosed by a cradle of hills with stunning views of the western coastline, Montego Bay’s lovely beaches are just one of the reasons why it is so popular. Montego Bay is a busy place with the centre of activity centred along Gloucester Avenue which has been renamed the “Hip Strip”, bars, restaurants and gift shops line most of the avenue. The strip ends with the infamous Margaritaville and soon after this you will come to Montego Bay’s most famous beach called Doctor’s Cave Beach. At the end of the hip Strip, the sea emerges once again with a lovely stretch of beach with some great snorkelling.
Downtown Montego Bay is not touristy but great to visit if you want to get a flavour of local Jamaican culture. It can be quite chaotic and colourful with lots of fruit and vegetable markets and local shops
The area to the north and south of Montego Bay has much to offer including:
Montego Bay features some great golf courses including:
White Witch at the former Ritz Carlton
Rose Hall & Greenwood Plantation House
The era of plantation slavery comes very much to the fore once you travel east of Montego Bay where you will find two palatial great houses that have been opened up as tourist attractions. Closest to Montego Bay is Rose Hall which was the former home of the “White Witch” Annie Palmer. She came to Rose Hall as the wife of its owner John Rose Palmer and is reputed to have murdered him and two more husbands after him as well as numerous lovers. The “White Witch of Rose Hall” has fascinated generations, and even today, there are those who claim to see Annie passing through the Great House. The supposedly haunted house has day and night time tours both of which are really fascinating.
Greenwood Great House is more interesting in terms of its architecture than Rose Hall. It was built in 1790 and is a beautiful building and definitely the greatest great house in Jamaica. It commands amazing coastal views and filled with original fittings and curiosities. Greenwood great house probably has the finest antique museum in the Caribbean.
