About the property

Bemus Point is a village in Chautauqua County, New York, United States. The village is within the Town of Ellery and located along the eastern shore of Chautauqua Lake. The population was 364 at the 2010 census. Bemus Point is also home of the floating stage with many performers during the summer.

The ferry connecting Bemus Point and Stow, NY was founded in 1811 by Thomas Bemus. The original ferry was a raft built by Thomas, and had to be poled across the lake.[2] Today, a cable-drawn ferry exists in its place and is operated by the Sea Lion Project LTD [3] Until the nearby bridge (Now part of I-86) opened Oct 30, 1982, the Bemus-Stow Ferry was the only way to cross Chautauqua Lake. When closed for the winter months, motorist had to travel north-west to Mayville, or south-east to Jamestown to reach Stow. Either way was a 19-mile round trip. Local residents often purchased a seasonal pass to use the ferry, commuting to Lakewood, Sherman, or other areas west of the lake.

Throughout the 1800s, Bemus Point gained popularity as a tourist destination, which promoted its growth and development. By the early 1900s, a dance hall known as the Casino, which still exists under the same name, became a well-known venue for entertainment, particularly big band music.[2] Today Bemus Point is still a popular summer tourist destination, with a large influx of summer population.

In the summer, Bemus Point hosts its 'Bemus Bay Pops' concert which involves many local musicians and is also host to the 'Chautauqua Lake Voices', similar to American Idol.

Nice Time at Chautauqua Bemus Point Cottage

  • 5 of 5

Our stay was very nice. Everything was well maintained and the property was clean and the owner very accommodating. Great communication the day of arrival and worked with us on where to find all the things we needed for our stay. I would highly recommend anyone looking for some downtime in a home away from home setting to check this one out!! We had a great time and will stay again in the future.

Snow much fun!

  • 5 of 5

5 stars doesn't really cover our review of the cottage, it was the perfect place for our Christmas plans in 2017. Even with the 3+ feet of snow and sub zero wind chills, the atmosphere of the cottage, the decor, THE HEAT! the throw blankets, we had a great time and would highly recommend the cottage for anyone staying in the area. Many thanks to our host for having it warm and inviting when we arrived after a long day in the car.

The location, too. 1/4 mile from a state park, that we were able to walk, the views of the lake, the fir trees covered in snow, for these South Carolinians it was a winter wonderland.

Great Location but rough

  • 2 of 5

The location of this cottage was great as it was close to family. The upstairs and the kitchen are rough. The front door only has a chain lock, but the bottom line is when you're at the lake you're hopefully

Nice little place - Good view of the lake

  • 3 of 5

We enjoyed our stay, the place worked good for our needs. We enjoyed sitting in the front porch with a view of the lake. The electric coffee pot and fry pan did not work, other than that the place worked well for us. 7 - guys, with one bathroom was difficult but we made it work out.

Owner's Response: There were lots of guys staying at this COTTAGE which is advertised as a 1 bathroom cottage. This they knew in advance so it shouldn't have been a surprise to them. They booked the cottage anyway knowing this information because the price was budget low for 7 people. The coffee pot works fine but they had put in way too much coffee in the filter plus they forgot to put in one part of the coffee maker. I offered to bring them a replacement coffee maker but Chris refused the offer. The electric fry pan is new so this is the very first time I'm hearing about that after there stay not while they were there. How can I fix a situation if I'm not made aware of it by my guest ? This is a 100 year old cottage on the lake.

Nice house located on quiet street,1.3 miles from downtown Bemus and 15 min drive from Southern Tier

  • 5 of 5

Overall the house is exactly what we expected. 1.3 miles from downtown Bemus Point, 15 mins from Southern Tier brewery, located on a nice quiet street and right across from the Lake. Nice getaway if you're on a budget or in town for a wedding or just a quiet getaway. We had 6 people and a little Lab stay at this house, and we experienced no issues. Beds were nice, shower/toilet worked well. We didn't spend much time at the house since we were in town for a wedding, so the house served its purpose. The owner was very responsive and happy to help if we required any assistance. Would recommend to others looking for a quiet getaway.
