About Laura Kolb
My husband and I built this house ten years ago. Much of the finishing materials and many of the fixtures were recycled from many NYC condo renovations since we are in the construction business. The house is a work in progress- this year we plan to work the grounds with blueberry bushes and more trails through the forest along the creek.
Laura Kolb purchased this House in 2004
Why Laura Kolb chose Peru
The best part about this location is the quiet peaceful location. It is near the country towns ('hilltowns') where there are many small farms and artisans. And it is in the Berkshires with all the cultural activities they have to offer. We find it is an oasis for our family compared to the city life we lead. Now that our daughters are grown, I find it was helpful for them to have known a different style of life our life Brooklyn.
What makes this House unique
My first idea about building this house was it would be similar to camping in comfort. The timber frame of the house was designed and built by a Swiss Company in British Columbia, Canada. The timbers are from douglas fir trees. At the time it was one of 3 built with the same design. The same company also built many Chalets in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

I won't have enough space here to say how much i appreciated this house, it's location, and the thoughtful consideration of Laura! I spent the whole month of June here, mainly to hike and do some photography. The house is fantastic. Everything you need is here, from paper towels to laundry detergent. The stove/oven is awesome; we did a lot of cooking. (Pittsfield has Market 32 - a one-stop grocery store who's bakery should be illegal!) The little toaster oven reheated food nicely; we didn't miss the microwave. The beds are super comfy, as are the pillows (very important to me!). The house is clean, tidy and nicely laid out overall. As Laura states in her description, they wanted a camp with more comforts of home, and this house surely delivers all that and more. The stars at night shining through all that glass are just phenomenal. I've never experienced anything like that before; getting to stare at the stars from bed - wonderful! Great fire pit, and there's wood for sale nearby. I met several of the neighbor" and all were very nice and welcoming. The Peru Library is a sweet must-see stop, but only open on Wednesdays and Saturdays. (You can get discounted passes to some of the area museums there as well.) The wifi worked beautifully all month, but i stayed away from streaming anything. It was perfect for surfing the net and email, but would slow down if too many devices were in use. I brought my own MP3 player and plugged it into their whole-house sound system - SWEET!! Bring something with an 8th" jack input - there's a cord for it there.
There are lots of waterfalls in the area, but try to make it to Tannery (in Savoy) if you can. It's amazing. Chapel Falls in Ashfield also became a favorite, as did hiking the Chesterfield Gorge. Savoy Mt. has some great hikes, with beaver dams on several of their ponds. Pittsfield State Forest has decent hiking and a neat lookout at the top that you can drive to. William Bryant Cullen Homestead is a pretty place, with some nice short hikes. I explored all the back roads for ways to get around, and found some really useful ones leading to Wahconah, Dalton/Pittsfield, and Tannery. Many of the area dirt roads are better than some of the paved ones, so give them a try. Also check out the Berkshire Botanical Gardens in Stockbridge, and the Norman Rockwell museum if you can -both totally worth visiting. Liston's on 143 in Worthington has great food too.
Hope you enjoy your stay as much as i did! - Marylea
Thank you Marylea!
I enjoyed your updates and pictures of the house and area. You are a dream tenant (guest!) when I am able to enjoy your trip with your discoveries along with you! I will make it to the Tannery some day! I like that you were able to visit the great Berkshires places and the surrounding hilltown country life (and hiking) as well. OH! and I will post your starry night picture of the house as well!
A perfect place to stay
The cabin was everything we expected and more. It was a wonderful place to spend a get-away weekend. We relaxed, played golf and went to Tanglewood. The Waconah golf course ( just 15 minutes away) was beautiful and gave the awesome feeling of playing golf in the wilderness.
I’ve been in hotels/ resorts all my career and with that, I have a keener eye then most in terms of the details and guest friendliness. This house is a great price value with NOTHING over looked.
Spacious enough for three couples, mom dad and four kids, a girlfriend reunion or a guys golf outing. Impeccably clean with WONDERFUL kitchen and baths. (great Teri cloth towels and contemporary shower, sink, camode)
I’m a cook and this kitchen is over the top equipped with sub zero fridge, gas cook top and every tool you would need to sauté, bake or make a four course meal or a Thanksgiving feast. Want to grille your food? They offer a great stainless gas grill or a nice Weber for those who prefer charcoal.
Don’t want to pack a ton of clothes for you and or the kids? Not a problem, they offer a washer and dryer. They offer every cleaning supply you need and extra everything. This house is equipped better than many homes.
The house is layed out well. Some can be watching a movie, others talking and playing games, while others can pick a quiet spot to read. Many of us are hesitant to book a place site unseen especially when we’re bringing family. Not to worry. This is safe, secure, quiet, peaceful and very comfortable.
Forgot some food and beverage items? No worries, there is a store not far from the house as well as beautiful waterfalls, historical sites, hiking trails, parks and picnic areas to truly enjoy.
In the morning for coffee or the evening for that glass of wine, there is a huge deck with table chairs and a great fire pit to sit around and truly enjoy nature. You’re right in the woods.....so nice.
In closing, you won’t want for a thing. They even provide DVD’s, games for adults and children as well as Hulu and Netflix. I’d be remiss if I didn’t mention that the owner is highly responsive. If you have any questions prior to arrival, they will be back to you shortly. They truly care about your comfort and overall stay. This house should be at the top of the list on HomeAway.
Oh, I should mention that there is a downside. On the day of check out, you will want to extend your stay......:)
Thank you Edward for the wonderful review! I am so happy you were able to enjoy. I have to add that the town is finally installing fiber high speed internet - which will bring Netflix and Hulu streaming much easier. Until then, I do suggest to pre- download movies you would like to watch.
I hope you can return soon!
A Wonderful Getaway in the Berkshires!
We (two couples, one baby, and one dog) had a wonderful time at this beautiful house in the woods! The interior of the house is splendid, and the kitchen was well-stocked with pots/pans/etc. for us to make several meals. We loved the firepit outside, and the house was full of DVDs and videos that kept us entertained at night. The good selection of local maps and tour guides also helped us find a fun local walk (the Ashuwillticook Rail Trail). The local dirt roads had almost no cars and were great for running. The fan kept the house well-ventilated as well. We saw deer and turkeys during our stay. The instructions Laura left were clear and helpful! All in all, we had a great time at this house and would be happy to return!
Quiet & Secluded getaway
After our favorite B&B closed, we chose Laura's house for our annual Tanglewood visit to see James Taylor. The house is secluded and oh so quiet - you couldn't hear traffic, people, road noise, NOTHING --- it was great! The house is nicely appointed and comfortable - we slept very well every night! There is no cable - but a great selection of movies and CDs - we fell in love with Ella Fitzgerald over the great sound system! There were also visits from the local wildlife; a mother turkey and her babies and a BEAR one afternoon!
Thank you for your review Kelley and Jeff
Although the house is very near the Peru State Forest- and surrounded by forest- we never were visited by a bear or turkeys in the past (that I know of!). Kelley and Paul had an adventurous weekend. (I do believe the bear was crossing the road near the house 30 feet from their car.)
Quiet & Comfortable
Another wonderful stay. The house was comfortable and cool, even during the warmer days. Peaceful, relaxing, and pleasing to the eye. We’ll be back.
There are many cultural activities to enjoy in the surrounding Berkshires and hill towns. Most places are about 40 minutes drive. There are hiking grounds in very near Dorothy Frances Rice Sanctuary or you can catch the Appalchian trail in nearby Dalton. We enjoy the local hill town life in nearby Worthington and Windsor- with plenty of farms and crafts. We love the waterfall at Wanconah State Park in Dalton. Also on Google earth there is a nearby waterfall that I have yet to explore- but it is a bit more adventurous as I am not sure about a path. But I heard it is reachable down a dead end road off of route 143. Oh and don't forget to visit the town library open only on Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00 (or Wednesday nights) to get some local lore!
