About Laura Kolb
My husband and I built this house ten years ago. Much of the finishing materials and many of the fixtures were recycled from many NYC condo renovations since we are in the construction business. The house is a work in progress- this year we plan to work the grounds with blueberry bushes and more trails through the forest along the creek.
Laura Kolb purchased this House in 2004
Why Laura Kolb chose Peru
The best part about this location is the quiet peaceful location. It is near the country towns ('hilltowns') where there are many small farms and artisans. And it is in the Berkshires with all the cultural activities they have to offer. We find it is an oasis for our family compared to the city life we lead. Now that our daughters are grown, I find it was helpful for them to have known a different style of life our life Brooklyn.
What makes this House unique
My first idea about building this house was it would be similar to camping in comfort. The timber frame of the house was designed and built by a Swiss Company in British Columbia, Canada. The timbers are from douglas fir trees. At the time it was one of 3 built with the same design. The same company also built many Chalets in the Canadian Rocky Mountains.

We had a great time for a few days at this property! We wanted a place to celebrate a late Christmas with my step children (19&20). It was a perfect, cozy getaway. Laura was extremely responsive with any questions we had prior to arrival. It's definitely remote! We actually enjoyed that our cell phones had no signal, but we were able to use Wi-Fi calling and receive texts. There is a landline if needed. No cable TV ... again not an issue for us, but it's something people look for. The internet was great, and the TV did have Netflix. They also had a HUGE library of movies, games, etc.
The kitchen was great as I cooked four meals while we were there. It had everything we needed. So thankful for a gas stove! The only thing to note that wasn't an issue for us was there is no microwave. I don't tend to use one often, but I know there are people who rely on one. Just a note.
We did struggle a bit trying to find a "local" store to grab a few things we had forgotten. Pittsfield is definitely the place to go. There were a few things that showed up as closer in Google searches, but they didn't pan out. If you are used to things being a few minutes away, just plan accordingly. We live in a remote area of Upstate NY, so it wasn't a big deal for us. It is actually something we look for in rentals.
We ended up going to Deerfield for the day. Check out the Magic Wings Butterfly Conservatory if you have a chance. It was a fun find for all ages! We ate at Champney's in Historic Deerfield, and it was really good. The weather wasn't great, so we didn't get a chance to explore most of what the area has to offer. We will definitely return when we have a chance. Looked like the fire pit would have been a lot of fun!
We would highly recommend this property! Thanks again Laura for a beautiful home away from home.

Thank you Jill for your detailed review- so glad you enjoyed your time with your family.
The house is clean, beautiful, simple elegance. We we were so pleased with the professional kitchen, comfortable beds and natural light streaming in though the gorgeous windows. Laura is easy-going and quick to respond.
Wonderful place to spend Thanksgiving!
This is a warm, inviting and comfortable place to spend a long weekend enjoying family time together. It is private and quiet and surrounded by woods. We had 8 people for Thanksgiving dinner and found everything we needed to be available to us. The house is well built and very cozy in cold weather. The huge windows alllowed the beauty of the outside to come in but kept the cold out. We are hoping to visit again in the summer as I am sure it will be beautiful then as well. Thank you to Laura for her help and for providing everything we needed.
Cozy home base for exploring the Berkshires
After spending a long weekend at this cozy home I can’t say enough good things about it. Communication with the owner went smoothly. The location of the house is extremely private with large windows that look out over the beautiful surrounding woods and night sky full of stars. The home is centrally located to all towns in the Berkshires. We hiked the Trustees property near Great Barrington one morning then spent the afternoon exploring that town. The next day we hiked Mt. Greystone and spent the afternoon in N. Adams. We opted for large lunches out so we could spend the evenings at home. From the large selection of dvds to the piano, we were quite content. The surround sound with the stereo and selection of CDs were a great compliment to our meal preparations and dining. Kitchen was complete with great applicances and work space. The rainwater shower head and the large soaking tub were helpful in easing our sore muscles. The beds were some of the most comfortable we’ve ever slept in. The eclectic furnishings and amazing architecture added to the ambiance and uniqueness this home. Highly recommend staying here.
Unplug, unwind, renew
We rented for a long weekend and although the weather didn't allow us to enjoy the property outside (so bummed we didn't get to have a fire in the excellent fire pit!), there was more than enough to enjoy inside! We stayed in and played board games on the ample dining table, listened to music, and read while a storm roared through the trees. This house is thoughtfully designed and appointed and we really loved the artistic flair the owners used in decorating, striking a good balance between unique touches and calming space. Furnishings and bedding are luxuriously comfortable and unfussy, the view is spectacular even in the rain, and the heating system worked splendidly to keep us cozy in the chill. We really wish we could have stayed longer to enjoy the sense of being away from it all...hope to go back!
Thank you for your kind review. So glad you enjoyed your stay!
A perfect place to stay
The cabin was everything we expected and more. It was a wonderful place to spend a get-away weekend. We relaxed, played golf and went to Tanglewood. The Waconah golf course ( just 15 minutes away) was beautiful and gave the awesome feeling of playing golf in the wilderness.
There are many cultural activities to enjoy in the surrounding Berkshires and hill towns. Most places are about 40 minutes drive. There are hiking grounds in very near Dorothy Frances Rice Sanctuary or you can catch the Appalchian trail in nearby Dalton. We enjoy the local hill town life in nearby Worthington and Windsor- with plenty of farms and crafts. We love the waterfall at Wanconah State Park in Dalton. Also on Google earth there is a nearby waterfall that I have yet to explore- but it is a bit more adventurous as I am not sure about a path. But I heard it is reachable down a dead end road off of route 143. Oh and don't forget to visit the town library open only on Saturday from 9:00 to 1:00 (or Wednesday nights) to get some local lore!
