October 21, 2011 – New York Times, Emily Brady:

“Sonoma County may be best known for its wineries and the tony (sic) towns of Healdsburg and Sonoma, but West County, as locals call the area around Sebastopol, is where the vineyards begin to give way to rolling hills, bohemian enclaves and the wild Pacific Coast beyond. Sure, there’s wine produced here — excellent pinots in particular — but there’s plenty to explore beyond it, especially around Sebastopol, where in recent years new restaurants, shops and live music venues have opened, securing the town’s position as West County’s arts and culture hub.”

American as Apple Pie

“‘I’ve been to Napa and Sonoma,’ you hear people say, as if they were one and the same. Sure, Sonoma’s 300-plus wineries, like those of vine-centric Napa, offer peak wine tasting, from Ravenswood’s deep Zinfandels to Gloria Ferrer’s sophisticated sparklers. But if you’ve visited only the county’s wineries, come back to sample the astounding diversity that makes Sonoma one of America’s travel treasures.

Spend some time floating in an inner tube down the Russian River and walking amid ancient giants—one over 1,400 years old—at Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve. Poke around the old Russian stockade at Fort Ross, which turns 200 in 2012, or the Spanish adobe mission, San Francisco Solano, in Sonoma town. Hunt for antiques along Petaluma’s downtown Victorian row, and dine on seasonal sake-steamed, aged abalone at Michelin-starred Cyrus in Healdsburg. And don’t miss a flaky, fruit-packed slice of Gravenstein pie from Mom’s Apple Pie, a roadside stop outside Sebastopol. It ranks up there with a Russian River Valley Pinot Noir as a real taste of Sonoma.”

Incredibly Thoughtful Hosts

  • 5 of 5

I've stayed in many hotels and vacation rentals, and Blackberry Cottage is by far the best place I have ever stayed at.

The cottage is very cute and cozy, and extremely comfortable. What makes this stay exceptional is how incredibly thoughtful Heidi and Brent are. They have thought of everything to make the cottage feel like home. The kitchen is fully stocked, down to fresh coffee and water in the fridge, and all the spices you will probably need. There are plenty of towels in the bathrooms. There's even nail polish remover, makeup removal toilettes, ziplock bags and foil (SO handy at vacation rentals), coolers, lawn chairs, even birthday candles. They have literally thought of everything.

A lot of vacation rentals I've stayed at are pretty bare - a few pots and pans, some towels, definitely no ziplock bags or tupperware that you can use during your stay. Heidi and Brent have gone out of their way to make Blackberry Cottage feel extremely inviting and homey. I highly recommend this property and would love to go back someday.

One last thing - this cottage looks to be popular, and I'm sure Heidi and Brent rent it out often. Despite that, they took the time to personalize a welcome note for us with our names and even provided us a basket of fresh fruit and two bottles of wine upon arrival. Their level of hospitality is second to none.

Perfect place for a getaway!

  • 5 of 5

Hosts were available and super friendly. House was fully stocked with anything you could need or want. Beds super comfy and the sheets so soft. Lovely woodsy setting close to great wineries and tasting rooms. You have to try the wine at Paul Mathew’s right nearby. And the food at Lowell’s was amazing! Though you have a completely fully equipped kitchen for prepping your own gourmet meals, there are some other great restaurants nearby as well. Great location for traveling to other cities close by. Great ping pong table, good WiFi, nice selection of dvds and games etc! This place is a must.

Raising The Bar

  • 5 of 5

Every aspect of our stay at BlackBerry cottage was superior in every way from any other short term rental we have done, and that is a lot.

We stayed as a family of four, on our yearly trip to California from Jackson Hole Wyoming to visit our son who moved there seven years ago. Our son is a chef, and Heidi‘s kitchen has every imaginable cooking tool you would need, and plenty of them. Obviously, chefs are extremely fussy about kitchens, so to state that son was very impressed with the variety in the pantry, the quality and abundace of cookware, utensils, bowls; nothing is lacking in that kitchen.

We have never stayed anywhere so fully and thoughtfully well -stocked and presented. The entire cottage was immaculate, the beds and bedding felt new and of superior quality, the bathrooms were spotless with fluffy towels and plenty of them, and bathroom supplies were complete and plentiful, including laundry supplies.. Her location is gorgeous and feels as though you are in the country although you are just off a main Road that leads right into Sebastapol in a short five minute drive. We particularly enjoyed the Ping Pong table, located in an immaculate garage, with numerous other yard toys available for use. We had mini family tournaments nightly after dinner, and even after the rest of us went to bed, my mid 30s sons played ping pong with each other every night up until about 2 o’clock in the morning… talking, joking and renewing their brotherly relationship. I could go on and on with the superlative’s about Heidi’s hosting and her property, but I don’t think there are enough adjectives to cover it. We will absolutely book with Heidi again… No doubt at all.

To conclude, I have not one negative thing to say. Having provided customer service to Jackson Hole visitors for over 42 years in my own career, I know the expense and attention to detail it takes to achieve this high level of product and service.

Kudos to you Heidi!

Fantastic job!

You have indeed raised the bar on short term rentals.

Tucked Away & Ideally Located

  • 5 of 5

This cottage is located just west of Santa Rosa, tucked in a grove of trees. The property is a perfect location from which to venture around Sonoma County and easily accessible to Napa and the Pacific Coast. The owners have done an excellent job of maintaining the cottage. The kitchen is very well equipped and detailed attention to guest needs is apparent throughout. We really enjoyed out stay at Blackberry!

Wonderful and cozy!!!

  • 5 of 5

The house was very clean, well-decorated, and perfect for our weekend stay! Our family stayed in the house on the property as well and it was fun to be close to them, yet have our own private place! We would love to come and stay here again!
