About the property

Min 9 Bedrooms, 7.5 Bathrooms, Sleeps max 28

This traditional classic Provencal villa is built on a one acre plateau on the top of a hill, in a large fenced five acres property, with total privacy, and breathtaking three hundred sixty degrees view overlooking the Mediterranean, the Alps and the rolling hills of Sofia Antipolis. The plateau is covered with a large lawn and has an large Californian style electronically secured swimming pool (very safe for the children) surrounded by various palm trees, wild olive trees, and lavender and a lot of open deck space. The large palm trees were a gift from my gardener who asked me one morning if I would be interested in having two full grown palm trees - a couple - free of charge. I would only have to pay for the transplantation cost as the owner of a neighboring estate wanted to get rid of them. I couldn't say no to such an opportunity.

A large fully enclosed outside monastery look like patio adjacent to the house, is the ideal location to keep the children secure and/ or the pets away from the guests during a party or when the adult are gone for a while.

An outside bar and barbecue, an easy accessible pool shower and WC under the outside staircase, plenty of garden tables and lounging chairs and games such as ping pongand, pétanque, make you want to party all day long and gaze at the stars till late into the night.

Standing amidst of all of it, is the white marble Buddha , the protector of the house. This one of a kind Chinese Budhha originates from India and is centuries old. The ball in his hand is known to have all kinds of healing powers might they be physical, mental or spiritual. That Buddha belonged to an American Ambassador in Bombay India at the beginning of the 19th century. When he took his retirement in his villa in St Jean Cap Ferrat, he took the Budhha with him! My mother and I saw it along the roadside oe day in front of an antique shop and mother who had only one more year to live went absolutely crazy about it once she saw it. Overwhelmed, I secretively made a deal with the shopkeeper to have it delivered on her birthday six months later. The presence of the Buddha and the happiness it brought into her life made her live another three years. I believe in quantum physics and how we are all interconnected with the fartest particles in the universe, therefore dont' refrain from caressing the ball and if your heart is pure your good wishes will become real.

The original villa which has the looks of a 19th century manor, is four hundred fity square meter large and has been conceptualized by MonsieurTriquenot who was the architect of Jean Cocteau, is one of the most prominent play writer and film director of the 2o th century. Monsieur Triquenot was very traditional and forbade my mother to install modern double paned windows insisting that the climate did not require them. The hardwood floors for instance were built "a l'ancienne" (the old fashin way!) There is an air gap between the hardwood floors and the base flooring which gives that original little crackling sound when you step on it that is so specific to french castles and mansions. Another traditional specificity of the house is its tile from Salern that is to be found in the bathroom at the floor levels and the one at the top level; on the countertop in the stylish old fashioned kitchen and around the pizza oven; and finally in the bathroom of the "bergerie" at the entrance of the estate at the bottom of the hill. When I was nine, my mother and I carefully picked them up not even being aware that they would become museum pieces on a later day. All those tiles are handmade making it possible to always make new ones even centuries later. Very traditiona is the banister of the spiral staircase that consists of a rope. When Mister Triquenot passed away his son took over and was more tolerant to new ideas that my mother picked up in LA such as closets! Later on was added consequently a Californian style swimming pool, the studio , the Obama room and the "Tunisian" style far East Wing with its tower ans terrace which isn't accessible to the tenants.

The guest have access to eight bedrooms and six baths. There are enough beds and rooms to accommodate up to twenty-four guests. The ground floor consists of: a large nineteenth century style foyer, a cute guest toilet; a marble spiral staircase leading to six bedrooms; a very large eight square meters living room with our traditional hardwood floors, a large authentic wood burning fireplace made from the local stone of Roquefort Les Pins, that can besides the electrical heating system and AC heat the entire house in the wintertime, large French doors that slides within the walls so that the exterior world harmoniously mingles with the interior ; is furnished with rare antiques and comfortable leather sofas with a seating capacity for twenty guests and a extendable oak dining table with a seating capacity up to fourteen guests , a den with a traditional oak table with a seating capacity of eight guests and a very practical gourmet kitchen with a large breakfast nook. A large master bedroom suite with a large bathroom with a tub and shower stall, covered with tile from Salern and a build in closet space and another bedroom in the same classical style which has its own private 3/4 bathroom, have direct acces to the living room. Both bedrooms have hardwood floors and view on the outside monastery look alike patio.

The upper floor consists of : the "South Wing Suite" with his own large outside sun deck overlooking the mountains, the pool and the Mediterranean. It has a large contemporary style bathroom with a walk in closet and traditional hardwood floors; the "North Wing Suite" has a large very private deck overlooking the Alps and the rolling hills where you can easily sunbathe nude away from everyone. This contemporary bathroom with marble tile is very bright , has its own walk in closet, tub, double sink, separate toilet and bidet. The room has a fridge and a microwave oven and is on the second floor detached from the rest of the house. Finally the "East Wing Suite" has slightly vaulted ceilings and has the capacity to lodge three guests. It has its own walk in closet and a very traditional Provencal bathroom which a shower stall and a sink decorated exclusively with "Salern" tile; The "Tower room " which has a balcony overlooking the alps and the pool; two rustic mansard rooms and one contemporary 3/4 bath.

The decor and the style are as eclectic as the writer owner. One of a kind Antique furniture is combined without any screwples with modern practical furniture adding to the charm and coziness of this estate.

The drapes of the living room and the bedrooms suites were designed by the decorator of the Palace of Prince Albert of Monaco.

The kitchen cabinets have remained the same since the last forty years in memory to my mother who used to spend many hours preparing the most exotic meals from macrobiotic cooking to the most extravagant vegan meals inspired by Ann Wigmore's food recipes. Vistors wonder why there are a few steps right in the middle of the hallway leading to the "South wing". Because it overlaps a large beam that reinforces to entire structure against seismic jilts.

The grounds are surrounded with fences and the grand portal is regulated electronically via remote controls.

There are many outside lights and the pool can be romantically lit at night.

Originally, before the house was built, it was just a steep hill. When I was eight years old my mother and I climb all the way to the top and we could see through a few branches the Mediterranean. My mother fell in love with the location and was ready to buy the property one condition that the sales agent who was also our to become contractor would flatten the top of the hill into into a large plateau. "No problem" he said and against all odds, one night he brought a few guys over and dynamited and flattened the entire thing, When my mother came to inspect the work, she thought the plateau what too small and she asked him to double its size, which he did hoping that he would eventually build the house of her dreams. A few weeks later se was overjoyed to see that one of her dreams had come true. However the contractor was fined by the city of an amount that would be considered ridiculous by the environmentalist if the same infraction was to be done today. Yet mother never used him as her contractor, as he was accused of selling illegally plots of lands that belonged to Pieds Noirs and was encarrated. She was very fortunate to meet Mr. Triquenot one of the most reputable architects in the region, who was recommended by the owners of the inn "Le Colombier".

The old rod iron gate can be opened automatically with a remote control and you can park about thirty cars around the plateau and about sixty throughout the entire estate. Originally there was a narrow road going around the plateau. Yet about ten years ago a brush fire set up by the kids of the neighbours almost reached the house. The cleaning maid was brave enough to stay on the premises and call the fire department. Her courage has saved the entire area from burning down into flames. Upon recommendation of the fire department officer, I enlarged the road which gave more space for the firetrucks to move around and hence to park more cars. Believe it or not, some of theclerks in city hall were not aware of the story and wanted to condemn me for illegally having enlarged the road not knowing that I did it upon recommendation of the officers of the fire department.

At at the bottom of the hill, when driving up the dirt road a little all in stones house catches one's attention. Being part of the estate, it is centuries old and used to be an old ruin that an old Portuguese artisan Victor rebuild from scratch. Every stone is from the land of Angel Hill.

About Padoum

The picture is the cover of the story "La Colline des Anges"(Angel Hill) which I wrote about three years ago in memory of my dearest parents. I was born in Brussels in 1958 and lived in Flanders till the age of seventeen till I decided to study at UCLA in one of the most creative and avant garde cities of the world : Los Angeles. I was granted my MA in film at UCLA in 1984. After having obtained my doctor's degree in nutrition, I published my first book "The Harmony Diet" named after my mother. In 1989 the RTB F produced an exclusive award winning reportage about my life in Los Angeles. Later on, inspired by my two favorite authors Maurice Maeterlinck and Felix Timmermans, writing became my passion. My first three fiction novels l "La Colline des Anges " by "Les Editions du Pantheon" "Onder de Olijfboom by "Free Musketeers" and "How Not to Bury your Mother in Provence" by "America Starbooks " came out in memory of my mother who loved her property in Provence so much. I recently obtained my dual citizen ship and lastly a documentary has been produced that should be coming out very soon on the European screens. I am now writing the story of "The Buddha House of Venice" where I permanently reside since 1999. It is a triplex out of which I rent out two of the three units as vacation rentals as it it right on the sands facing the vast re energizing Pacific Ocean. Besides writing I enjoy exploring more and more the secrets of the universe and metaphysics. I love reading tarot cards for people just out of love and compassion to help them trace their road in their live so that they can face this more and more complex world . Swimming, hiking, eating healthy, staying away from alcohol and tobacco smoking have helped me stay in shape at my older age in contrast to my childhood when I was bedridden most of the time. To make people happy and help the homeless and the kids of my gospel FNC church in South Central LA are part of greatest joy in life.

Padoum purchased this estate in 1966

Why Padoum chose Roquefort-les-Pins

Because of its strategic implantation between Cannes, St Stropez and Monte Carlo; its breathtaking views; its calm and serenity; its secure environment; its large amount of spacious rooms; its large possibilities of having the greatest fun and lastly its story behind it and the incredible energy it holds and emanate to people who stay there as it has attracted so many marginal entities from all over the planet. It is the perfect place to travel back in time and to imagine how it was to live in the Provence fifty years ago when Roquefort Notre Dame was still a very remote community far away from the frantic world of automobiles and various upcoming technologies. Once you have reached the plateau and finally settled in you have a sense of a back to the past syndrome. You will feel totally secure, protected by nature and the land that surrounds you, behind the large rod iron gate. There is some sort of force coming out from the soil and the white marble Buddha that is more than two hundred years old. The plateau contains, as some of my friends say, the same energy as that of a vortex similarly to the ones you find in Sedona in the gorgeous state of Arizona. Enjoying everyday's sunrises and watching the sun sets behind the Alps are unique opportunities to recall the incredible healing and calming powers of nature. Whether you want to be totally zen; whether you want to party with the kids in and around the large swimming or on the lawn playing petanque or ping pong; whether you want to enjoy the sun rays flirting with your bare skin and body and feel the warm Siroccco wind from Tunisia caress your waving hair; whether you want to enjoy a sip of Provencal rich fruity wine with a rare selection of the local cheeses while watching the golden sun rays sparkle on the Mediterranean; whether on a chillier evening you reminisce around the large wood burning fire place; this place is all about family ties, ever lasting friendships, peace and unconditional love.

What makes this estate unique

This property has a story. Healers, spiritual leaders, producers, writers from all over the world have come to shared the uniqueness of the grounds. The most memorable event occurred when the grounds were blessed by one of the highest and supreme Buddhist dignitary from the second Tibetan Buddhist school: his holy highness the Karmapa. He came with his a delegation of monks, musicians, priests to perform many rituals on the property and bless it profoundly in the presence of hundreds of people. Many spiritual gatherings were hold in the large Obama room which became a sanctuary of prayers and devotion. Unfortunately I did not have the right permits to make from Angel Hill a public place and upon the neighbors complaints I got entangled in a ten year long law suit against the prefecture. Yet at the end I was able to regularize everything. Unfortunately by the time the Obama Room was permitted the School of Buddhism had taken another route. Yet I haven't up given up my mother's dream to make Angel Hill accessible to the public one way or the other. When I transit to the other world, will it go to the villagers of Roquefort Notre Dame as a center for artists or where people can speak up to fight for the ecological rights of our fragile our planet, will it eventually go back to the Buddhist or a congregation that will play jazz and gospel , or could it eventually become a universal library. It is not very clear at this time. Time will tell. In the meantime lets be pragmatic and enjoy the place for what it has to offer : a nice healthy environment enabling us to re energize ourselves and connect with the forces of the beautiful natural environment of the Provence. A place for the children to enjoy in many various way and that they will remember one they grow up. Healing, Relaxation, Detente, Serenity, Beauty, Fun, Joy, Laughs, Friends and Family..

Un baptême exceptionnel

  • 5 of 5

  • 5 of 5

On y reviendra sûrement !!!

Daddy’s Birthday celebration

  • 4 of 5

Beautiful private estate in a quiet residential area. We were impressed by this villa located at the top of the hill, surrounded by spectacular views and yet real privacy around villa and pool with a large garden. We did a lot of research to find a suitable venue for our special family celebration and this lovely villa in a peaceful and relaxing location made it very special. Rino, the property Manager told us everything that was needed for our stay, greeted us at the start and bid us farewell at the end. This is a lovely destination to bring people together and we had a wonderful family holiday!

Perfect vacation in a perfect location.

  • 5 of 5

Perfect vacation in south of france. We stayed at the beautifull house for two weeks in middle of june. We could spend hours out on the terrace and watching the view over the france countryside and playing by the pool. Using the grill out on the terrace was the highlight of every night, after dinner watching the thunders from the terrace. Had perfect two weeks and cant wait to go back :-)

Spectacular Classic French Estate

  • 5 of 5

The country location, the pine scented air, the mountains to the back and the Mediterranean Sea off in the distance made this slice of heaven perfect. The house was beautifully appointed and very clean upon our arrival. The service was prompt, friendly, and courteous. We especially enjoyed going to town in the morning for fresh croissants to be enjoyed in the courtyard before heading out for the day. The many local attractions made for memories my family will never forget. We even had the pleasure of hosting an elegant dinner party for our friends. The kids most enjoyed the pizza we made in our own pizza oven. Would highly recommend.... it was perfect!

Strategically located: Besides a wonderful downton Roquefort Les pins with all the kind of stores you need, such as a large shopping market, even a cinema, and an elaborate medical center in case of an emergency, 10 min driving from Polygone, the most elegant brand new outdoor shopping mall California style Ville Neuve Loubet ( great parking, latest theaters, best shos and restaurants) and in the midst of the stellar landmark towns such as Cannes, famous for its glamorous festivals and conventions, Grasse, the city of perfumes, St. Pol and Antibes , cities of painters and further away the legendary cities of Monte Carlo and St Tropez ... and in case you are a true nature lover please take a day trip to visit "Les gorges du Verdon" and "Isola 2000". But you don't even have to drive anywhere to discover the most beautiful natural surroundings. When you exit Angel Hill and walk towards the cemetery that is just about half a mile away, you' ll find hiking paths that lead you straight to the mountains and wooded areas making it possible for you to hike all the way to the Italian border, the same path the refugees used to take during World War II. High in the mountains you will reach the enchanting "La Vallee des Merveilles". Only half a mile away, you can walk to the "Gorges du Loup" a beautiful plush green canyon with a tormented river starting in the mountains and streaming down through Gagnes and finding its way out in the Mediterranean in Cagnes Sur Mer. I would recommend that you also take your car and drive up the mountain to Greolieres-Les-Neiges. But. don't forget to stop over at Gourdon first a medieval town perched like an eagle's nest high on the mountain hill that faces Angel Hill. You can actually see Gourdon from the plateau and from Gourdon you can spot the white marble Buddha of Angel Hill when you look through the telescope. Gourdon truly condenses the entire feeling of the Medival Provence with its little shops such as the glassblower shop, scents and perfumes shops and its Delicious creperie, the medieval church and its castle and its wonderful Versailles alike garden perched about one thousand meters above sea level and from which you have the most panoramic view of the entire area. You can see so far away that on a very clear day you can even see Corsica they say! The children will love Gourdon because it is not a long visit and it is so cute and almost Disneyland like especially during Christmas. But do not stop there and if you are eager to see some snow continue driving till you reach much higher up in the mountains and see the most gorgeous landscapes to finally reach the ski resort of Greolieres-sur- Neiges. The purest mountain air and blue skies and who knows snow! You can rent skis there or just enjoy watching the children having so much fun here and there.

Don't stay in this gorgeous part of the world without visiting Cannes and its one of kind Palais des Festivals. When you visit Cannes, you must take a fifteen minutes boat trip to the Iles Les Rins, two kidney shaped island that of St. Marguerite and St Honorat, that are just a mile away from each other. During the boat ride you will see one of most envied coastline in the world: the bay of Cannes, with its casinos, luxury hotels and La Croisette. Once you have reached the first island "St. Marguerite" you will be so happy to know that no cars are allowed and you can at ease walk across the island without having to worry that someone will hit you! The different paths are nicely indicated so that you can't get lost. The tour of the island will take about one hour and it is really worth it. Have your camera equipment ready. You can rest in one of the small creeks and swim even in the nude although it is not as permissible as it used to be. You will enjoy the crystal clear blue water . Before taking the boat to go to the other island you must visit the legendary castle where the "Masque de Fer" of the three Musketeers was imprisoned fro many years. The other Island "Ile St. Honorat" has a ancient monastery where half a dozen monks reside who make their local wine from the vineyard that surround their monastery. I personally do not drink or smoke, but I heard from a few of my friends that their wine is rich, delicious, organic and blessed of course.

And then comes the time to take the boat back to the old harbor of Cannes. Of course you can enjoy a great bouillabaisse in the Old Cannes yet I would suggest you drive to Antibes and treat yourself to the most most delicious pizza at "Le Collier". The crispy thin crusted pizza are larger than the plate. The "Tartar" for the meat eaters, the "Norwegienne" for the seafood lovers and the especially made for me "Vegetarian" are to die for, not to mention the vegan pizza specially created for me! Well, that said, I am now ready to listen to your suggestion
