About Tim O'Donoghue

Bernadette and Tim O’Donoghue met in The Windy City of Chicago a few years back. We acquired the property in 2002. We then returned from Chicago in 2004.

Bernadette was a paralegal secretary and is now a stay at home Mom and an excellent baker, I am an electrician by trade but got into construction during my 14 years in Chicago. I restored several old houses and classic vintage apartment buildings during my time there. I coupled this experience with Bernadette’s keen eye and interior design savvy to create some wonderful finishes and unusual touches. We began the colossal rehab project in 2004 to restore the Priory to its former glory , it was basically completed it in 2007 or is it ever complete I like to ask myself ?

We pride ourselves in welcoming you into our place.

Tim O'Donoghue purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Tim O'Donoghue chose Killarney

I grew up in Killarney, where my parents owned a camping site and I truly loved meeting visitors on a daily basis. We have 4 children and we wanted to raise them here in Ireland, so we said we would give it a shot and here we are. When this property became available we realized how unique it was and what a fantastic opportunity it would be to own The Priory.

What makes this cottage unique

We are in a key location, a ten minute walk from town but it feels like we are in the heart of the countryside where you cannot hear a sound by night.

You will get a quiet private house to yourself where you can come and go as you please. You can cook when you want and have the full use of the 1.5 acre property on private grounds. You can sit back and relax in the front of the open hearth fire sipping a nice Irish whiskey or reading a good book with the sweet smell of turf burning away. You will get the real feel of Irish living and live like we live ourselves while visiting in your home away from home.

We are on site owners who are here to help you in any way you require and assure a wonderful stay. We have invaluable knowledge about the local area from cultural information to hikes, local food joints to off the beaten track drives. We can organize in-house chef, or poetry recital or to a music session.

We like to tell our guests ''We are as near or as far as you wish.'

Home away from Home

If you are traveling to Killarney and looking for a place to stay, I highly recommend

The Priory, Killarney Courtyard Cottages. We have stayed there on two separate occasions, once in An Tigan and last year in Teach Mor and we wouldn’t even think of staying anywhere else. With The Priory, you can choose a cottage that best serves your needs, whether you plan to stay for a few days, a week or a month. All four cottages are self-catering and include many more amenities than you will find in a hotel. The Priory is only about a 15 min. walk to the City Centre, but has the feel of an enclave of country cottages. We stayed in Teach Mor from Aug. 10 to Sept. 14, 2016 and absolutely loved the space and comfort it provided.

Aside from the many amenities of this cottage, which include a fully equipped kitchen, washer/dryer, jacuzzi tub, ensuite master bedroom and plenty of high quality towels and bed linens, the location really is perfect. We could easily walk into town and pop into a pub for a pint, {which we very much enjoyed}, but it’s also an easy bike ride in the opposite direction to Muckross House, Muckross Abbey and Torc Falls in the Killarney National Park. We enjoyed the convenience of being able to walk to many tourist attractions including Ross Castle, Killarney House and the Killarney Brewing Company as well as St. Mary’s Cathedral for Mass on Sundays. We loved walking back from a trip to town, turning off of busy Muckross Rd. onto the private secluded lane and listening to the sound of the river. As we made our way back to Teach Mor, we were usually greeted by the “Welcome Waggin”, Oscar and Mazie, the four legged members of the O’Donoghue family.

Which brings me to the main element that makes Teach Mor, and The Priory in general, such a wonderful place to stay: the cottages are attractive and comfortable to be sure, but it’s the kindness and personal attention given by Tim and Bernadette O’Donoghue that make The Priory such a special place. Tourists go to Ireland to take in the beauty of the country, but it’s the warmth of the Irish people as demonstrated by the O’Donoghues that keep people coming back! Once you have stayed at The Priory, you will long to return and make it your Irish “Home Away From Home”.

The Priory: where you need to stay when visiting Ireland

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I celebrated our 25th wedding anniversary in June. We decided to take our two teenage boys to Ireland to celebrate and to visit one of my ancestral homelands. An acquaintance in Chicago, who is friends with the owners of The Priory (Tim and Bernadette), recommended it as a place to stay in Killarney.

The Priory consists of a main house and a number of small cottages. We stayed in the Teach Mor cottage. The place oozes old world charm...a cobblestone walk way, arches and a small fountain all right outside your door. Our unit was very recently remodeled and was tastefully decorated. The washer/dryer located in the cottage is a major benefit for those who pack lightly or go out for day hikes in Killarney Nat'l. Park.

There is a small soccer pitch in front of the main home that our boys ended up using every evening when we got back from our day trips.

Tim and Bernadette were extremely helpful in setting or suggesting revisions to our itinerary each day and we thoroughly enjoyed their family's company. The location is a short walk from the town center (make sure to stop in at the Killarney Brewing Company for a sample on your way to/from town) and is a great jumping off point for day trips (like the Ring of Kerry and Dingle Peninsula).

I would heartily recommend The Priory for anyone traveling to the Killarney region.

Comfortable home

  • 5 of 5

The location of this house is great. Accessible to all the sights and the ring of Kerry. We didn't specify an arrival time, which I recommend, since our host was out on an errand when we arrived. It was early March and the heat was off so it took a while for the home to warm up. The hosts were very helpful and apologized. They were very welcoming. The interior of the home had a stone wall and contributed to the Irish feel! It was a delightful stay!

Wonderful Familiy Vacation!!

  • 5 of 5

Stayed at Teach Mor for 2 weeks with 5 for a family vacation. We had different ages and physical abilities and the cottage was set up well for all. The walk in shower is fabulous! The cottage is close to the Town Center but you would never know it. It was a good location for day trips in SW Ireland and Killarney National Park offered lots to do on the days you don't want to be driving. Walked every morning to town or in the Park. Tim and Bernadette were great hosts offering lots of information. Tim told us about Irish music right across the street, great night out and no driving. Some of the many highlights were, Dingle, Ring of Kerry, Muckross House and Abbey, Gap Of Dunloe (hike or jaunty ride), hike up Old Kenmare Rd., Kinsale, Kenmare. In town had great meals at the Sportsman, Robertinos and a fun night at Murphy's Pub. My daughter did 2 Mini-Marathons and I did one, great way to meet local people! Bernadette....thank you for the Scones delivered warm and delicious. I can't forget to mention Oscar and Massie your dogs. We all loved them, Oscar visited us daily and we had to bring him home from the pub one night! We are already talking about our next trip to Ireland. Thanks again. Shannon

A Wonderful Stay

  • 5 of 5

We are a group of 4 women in our sixties visiting Ireland for the first time. I fell in love with this property when I found it on the vrbo site. I had booked properties with them previously and had nothing but great experiences.

We stayed in the cottage for 6 nights and we absolutely loved it. Tim greeted us; gave us a brief tour then gave us names of restaurants and pubs where we could find traditional music. The pictures accurately represent the cottage; it was clean and well stocked with towels. Tim lit a fire for us in the fireplace as it was evening when we checked in. The stove is very efficient and heated the entire building in no time. We found the beds very comfortable; and one of us used the sleeper sofa which was comfy as well. Washrooms are large with great showers.

Tim was very helpful arranging tours for us; we did not want to do the large coach tours so he contacted a taxi company .We did a tour of the Ring of Kerry which was about 8-9 hours in a very comfortable van that had room for more than our group of 4. The taxi driver was excellent ( driving skills and providing us with information and background of the area we were touring). Tim also arranged a taxi to take us to the departure point for a tour of the Gap of Dunloe. We were blessed to have a beautiful day for this.

On another topic Tim suggested that we attend the White Gates pub on Monday evening to watch the set dancing. This was one of the highlights of our week in Killarney.

Location was perfect for us as we like to walk. To get to the town center it could not be easier...leave the property and turn left.

We would not hesitate to recommend this property to others. Great location; quiet for sleeping at night yet close to town center.

The owners live on site and are very helpful with suggestions for food and activities.

Outstanding "home away from home"

  • 5 of 5

We have fallen in love with Ireland, especially the SW area. We rented Teach Mor for 7 nights and wanted to stay another 7. This cottage is exactly as described and pictured. It is exceptionally clean, has everything you might need for cooking; the queen size beds are very comfortable with crisp, white linens. The very large closets in each bedroom have many storage shelves as well as ample space to hang clothes. (There are 2 twin beds upstairs, but we had no need to use them.) The en suite bath has a large shower with a bench which was perfect for one in our group who has mobility problems. The main bath has a jacuzzi as well as a shower..lovely. The washer and dryer worked well and it was nice to do laundry mid-week. While you are close to the town of Killarney, you feel like you are in the countryside. It is so quiet. From the living room window you look out onto a pasture with the friendliest cows! Tim and Bernadette were gracious hosts, welcoming us, advising us where to eat, what to see. Tim made arrangements for a taxi to pick us up and drop us off at the cottage for one great day's adventure to the Gap of Dunloe. He provided very detailed maps and directions for " his" tour of the Ring of Kerry and also the Dingle Peninsula. Move over, Rick Steves--we saw more following Tim's itinerary! An added surprise was a basket of warm, delicious, homemade scones delivered by Tim one morning. Thank you, Bernadette. Parking is on the property, off street, well lighted, and very safe. We have rented apartments and cottages in Paris and the Cotswolds, but never have we had such a clean and inviting home as "Teach Mor". We would love to return.
