Beautiful property in dire need of TLC

  • 2 of 5

As another reviewer mentioned, I too was concerned by the negative review of this property from June and hoped the guest who wrote it was just hard to please. Unfortunately, we found their review accurate.

Before our stay, we had to contact the owner several times for final check in information. Up until our arrival at the house, it was unclear how to get inside the rental. I found this worrisome, as owners of previous rentals have been much more organized and upfront about check in instructions, often sending out details several weeks in advance.

At first glance, we were happy with the home and property. The place itself is absolutely gorgeous and the views are stunning. Sitting on the upper deck with a coffee or glass of wine while listening to the lake was very relaxing. However, as others have noted in their reviews, the home is incredibly dirty. Though housekeeping is shown as an amenity on the property's listing, the place looked like it hadn't been cleaned in some time. Dust and grime covered nearly every surface and there was an ant infestation in the kitchen. Worst of all, we realized the bedsheets had not been washed prior to our arrival, and were covered in dirt and hair. In our many years of using vacation rentals, we've never had to clean our own bedsheets.

Wifi and appliances worked great for us, but several things broke down during our stay. When we arrived, we found the living room's ceiling fan out of service and hanging by a cord. On our last night, the master bedroom AC unit and hot water heater stopped working.

Please note that the owner does not provide basic amenities, such as toilet paper or a lighter to use the grill. These things come standard in most rentals, so it would have been nice to know we needed to bring them ourselves. Instead, we had to make an emergency trip to a nearby grocery store.

Also, beware: Though air conditioning is listed as an amenity, there is no central AC, only a unit in the master bedroom. We found this misleading and would not have booked the property had we known. It was difficult to sleep at night, as the temperature was uncomfortably warm during the summer.

Overall, we had a nice stay (because of the company, rather than the property), but I cannot recommend this rental due to the above reasons. With proper upkeep, this place would be amazing!

Gorgeous Views, Poorly Kept

  • 2 of 5

The location is amazing with breathtaking views of the lake as soon as you walk in the house. We enjoyed the expansive deck- having our morning coffee out there while listening to the water was so peaceful. If that is all you are looking for you will love this place. For me I just couldn't get past the the condition of the property enough to rate this higher. I had seen a previous review stating how dirty the place was and I crossed my fingers that they were just dramatic or hard to please, but I unfortunately had a similar experience. Whoever cleans the place does a very poor job. Upon walking in I could see footprints all over the hardwood floors and debris all over the rugs, crackers under the bed, crumbs and leftover food in the fridge, fridge on the deck smelled horrible so we left that one alone. There were dead bugs EVERYWHERE! Hanging from the ceiling upon entry, smashed and smeared on the walls, tangled in cobwebs in every corner of every room, caked on all of the window screens, stuck to all of the railings on the deck. There were plenty of live bugs as well- the most intense fruit fly infestation I've ever seen, ants crawling out of the coffee maker, and centipedes crawling through every room. One guest found one inside her jacket one morning and we had to dodge them every time we used the bathroom. Speaking of bathroom- each one had a half used roll of toilet paper and no back ups so we had to use napkins most of our stay. Same story with the paper towels which was unfortunate since I had a lot of cleaning to do even upon entering the house for the first time. Aside from the filth, there were also several things that had been neglected. Window cranks that wouldn't shut, the ceiling light/fan in the living room hanging by a wire with a note not to use it, light bulbs that were out in many rooms, the stopper in the sink had to be manually opened from under the cabinet several times a day or it clogged up, we didn't have hot water the first morning as we had run out of fuel, dents and gouges in several walls, brown sludge covering the back yard, weeds growing so high one outside staircase had no access. To be fair, the owner was very responsive about fixing the heat and providing the wifi password. It was just such a shame to see there was no pride or care taken. If you don't mind roughing it, you'll love the location. Just don't expect luxury like the listing indicates. Also- 4th queen bed is a pull out futon. Only 4 real beds.

The house itself was beautiful however there were several issues with things not working.

  • 3 of 5

The house is absolutely beautiful with amazing views of Lake Champlain. Plenty of space for our families and pets.

We were very disappointed by the presentation of the home. The grill was filthy and the yard had lots of garbage (cigarette butts, beer/liquor bottles, cups) scattered about. In addition to this, many items were not in working order. The chandelier in the main room was hanging by a cord which had been rigged to keep it from falling down. So we had no ceiling fan or light in the main room. There were two lamps placed on the floor to compensate, however only one of them worked so it was very poorly lit at night. There were multiple lights throughout the home with bulbs that didn't work and there were no replacements in the home. There was also no hand soap in any of the bathrooms and the garage was full of garbage bags piled up right next to the door from previous guests, at least 20-25 and it smelled horrible. The house hadn't been throughly cleaned in some time. Lots of dust and cob webs everywhere. Lastly, there was no wifi. When we tried to connect it sent a message saying that the bill had not been paid and that the service was disconnected. I contacted Rob who was very nice but offered no solution or compensation. He said the garbage was piled up because the garbage company doesn't pick up at the house and he didn't want guests to have to bring it up to the end of the driveway. I would have been happy to take it wherever it needed to go to avoid other guests from having to deal with the smell. Overall I give this house a 3 simply because of its beauty but if it was based on quality and cleanliness alone, I would give it a 1.

Nice house with beautiful view.

  • 4 of 5

Spacious house with a beautiful view of lake Champlain. Access to the shore with a fire pit nearby was great. It's rocky with no dock or stairs so footwear when swimming is recommended. Also had speakers on back porch that we could play music through, which was nice. Would give it five stars, but found the grill dirty and cans & broken glass by the fire pit. Owner didn't give a walk through on arrival or checkout instruction either, which I hear is usually common practice. Regardless of the couple of minor issues, we had a great time.

FILTHY! WAS NOT CLEANED! DISQUSTING!!!

  • 1 of 5

Disgusting amount of mouse droppings and multiple chemical traps in kitchen cupboard under stove. Was not vacuumed (tremendously dirty), not dusted (draw finger through dust in furniture and leave path), oven was horrid (never seen an oven so loaded with black greasy layers of crusted filth). Under downstairs beds had not been cleaned in a long time, nauseating! Water bottle, noise maker, plastic pieces, and tremendous amount of dust. Windows do dirty hard to see out and loaded with cobb webs. Garbage down by fire pit and plastic chairs overturned and scattered about. Disposable aluminum pan, pair of shoes, and large amount of leaves in deck. The outdoor kitchen sink was filled with old rain water filled with decaying leaves. Outdoor grill not cleaned in a very long time (gross). I washed all the bedding because I could not trust it had been done and definitely did NOT smell fresh. We were celebrating our daughter's college graduation and had invited our friends and business owners from Plattsburgh to have dinner with us. We also had family members arriving and we totally embarrassed at the house we had rented. My husband and I spent many, many, many hours cleaning the house we paid for. No communication from owner about check in instructions and had to request this information a couple of times. Owner offered free night in future or $100 back- both these offers were a complete insult. We asked for a free night credited now, heard NOTHING back from owner. Why could we take more days off from work, pack and unpack, have additional travel expenses, to stay in a house which upset us so much. The amount of cleaning this house required was enormous, and I have photos to prove it!!!!
