Overview

About the property

2 Bedrooms, 1 Bathroom, Sleeps 4

This beautiful restored Captain's House is one of the oldest in the historic Village of Greenport. It's from 1830 and has so many historical details which were carefully preserved in the renovation. The house is within walking distance to all the great restaurants, shops and the marina. Despite its central location it's perfectly quiet and very private with a huge fenced in garden.

There are two bedrooms each with Queen beds, a living room and a huge eat in kitchen. The two bedrooms are on separate floors, so everyone gets a great sleep. The second floor bedroom is reached by the staircase in the kitchen, the first floor bedroom is located next to the living room.

There is wifi throughout the house and in the garden and the kitchen has a washer and dryer for you to use. There is a flat screen HDTV in the living room.

You will love the garden, it is huge and has mature trees and beautiful plants and flowers. There is a deck off the kitchen and even a gazebo, all perfect to enjoy the lovely summer evenings.

I stay in the front of the house or rent a small portion of it when I'm travelling. This part is completely separate from the garden wing (it's a very long house) and both parts have their own entrances and even different addresses. The garden is only accessed from the garden wing and is all yours to enjoy!

About Isabel

I'm from Germany and live in New York City. I came to the North Fork by chance but instantly fell in love with the charm and history of Greenport. It is so unique in its setting surrounded by water, its wonderful food and wines and its proximity to New York that I've been coming here ever since.

Isabel purchased this house in 2013

Why Isabel chose North Fork

When this house from 1830 came on the market (it had always been in the same family) I knew this was a one time opportunity - luckily it was really in good shape already and it was fun bringing out its abundant historic details. The house has beautiful wooden floors and all the original doors and windows. The living room walls and ceiling are the original tin, quite unique and now shine in their restored glamour.

What makes this house unique

Garden with mature trees and beautiful plants, huge eat in kitchen with open ceiling leading up to second floor, washer/dryer, historic details throughout. Walk to all Greenport has to offer. Vineyards in close proximity.

Guestbook comments from the owner

We stayed at this beautiful house for six nights at the end of June/beginning of July. It was extremely clean and has a lovely private garden with great deck and wonderful awning. There were great firm beds, wifi, TV with cable and high end outdoor chairs. Isabel was very responsive to our needs and we enjoyed the easy walk into town.

Quaint with everything you need in an ideal Greenport location

  • 5 of 5

We truly enjoyed our stay in the "Captain's House". The location was perfect within walking distance to shops and restaurants and the house truly has everything we needed for our family of 3. The yard, deck and gazebo were such a nice added touch to relax and play as well. We'd love to return!

A welcoming North Fork base

  • 5 of 5

Isabel's garden apartment was well located for exploring Greenport on foot and introducing Canadian friends to the East End by car. The accommodations were bright and clean. The sky-lit kitchen was well equipped for whipping up a delicious fish stew with local vegetables and the fresh catch from the Southold Fish Market. We enjoyed eating lunch in the backyard gazebo on a bright fall afternoon. The library next door was our reading annex. All in all, an enjoyable stay.

Bright home with amazing outdoor space

  • 5 of 5

Home is bright and inviting with convenient location blocks from town and the grocery store. The outdoor space is amazing; comfortably furnished gazebo (with a nice garden around it), big lawn (with loungers for getting sun), and outdoor dining patio (with retractable awning). Inside got hot during the day (downstairs bedroom has the only wall AC unit). We hope to return. Thanks Isabel and Teresa.

Beautiful and Conveniently Located House!

  • 5 of 5

We loved staying at Isabel's house! It's beautiful and well-maintained, with modern fixtures. The outdoor garden and gazebo were lovely, and it was very relaxing to sit outside. The house is also conveniently located; within walking distance of the shops and restaurants in Greenport, which made things easy in the summer since parking can be bit of a problem on the main streets. Thank you for letting us stay there!

nice house

  • 4 of 5

We were happy at this house. As the other reviews mentioned, nice place, clean, and close walk to town. We found some good restaurants, loved the brewery tasting room, and kids loved the Carousel. Beaches are quiet, with calm water and rocky beaches (bring flip flops). Also next door is a nice library which came in handy for the kids on rainy days. Beautiful backyard which is fenced in to keep the kiddos safe. Our only complaint was lack of air conditioning. The downstairs bedroom has a small air conditioner which kept that bedroom cool, but the rest of the place got VERY HOT at night (we visited on a really hot, humid week). Upstairs bedroom was super hot and uncomfortable, we had to go out and buy an extra fan for the room which was the only thing that made it tolerable.

Owner's Response: The AC in the upstairs bedroom was added. It didn't seem necessary as there is often a breeze which is stronger upstairs and I didn't want to block the view into the garden but it has now been added.

The place was nice BUT...

  • 3 of 5

Though the garden wing of this old historic house is very contemporary, bright, and comfortable, there was only one air conditioner and it was in the 1st fl bedroom, there was nothing (not even a fan) in the livingroom and with temps in the mid to upper 80's it was not comfortable during the day. Also, no beach/sand chairs were available which was another disappointment.

The beaches in this area are very rocky and not pleasant to wade or walk in the water ... Greenport is nice to visit for a day or 2 to visit the cute downtown area.

Owner's Response: The AC to upper bedroom was added. The beaches in Greenport are lovely with rocks and boulders, many things to discover. My favorite is called 67 steps as this is what leads down to it. You'll often find only 10 other people there. For easier access you'd choose the beach at the end of 5th Street which is sandy and not rocky at all. You can park right next to it.

The North Fork is known as the garden of New York. There are countless vineyards as well as fruit, vegetable and flower farms all around. There are oyster farms and fresh fish markets, it truly is amazing how good the food is here. The vineyards all offer sampling and live music, it's a very enjoyable experience.

There are many beautiful beaches around Greenport, some you can have almost to yourself and the town has wonderful historic charm and is all walkable. There are many great restaurants as well as beautiful shops.

There is a ferry to Shelter Island right in Greenport as as well as the Jitney buses and Long Island Railroad to New York (I find the Jitney buses the most comfortable and they take 2.5 hours to Grand Central!). There is also a ferry in Orient Point which takes you to Connecticut so you are in a perfect spot to explore the near and far.
