Overview

About the property

Cottage,2 Bedrooms,2 Baths...with optional Bungalow separate cabin(1 BR)

Need a quiet place to unwind and relax? This farm is 600 acres of oaks, dogwoods, pines and wildflowers surrounded by the Bankhead National Forest, with no neighbors in sight!

Why do we call it the River Art Cabin? It sits on a bluff overlooking Clear Creek, the 'River' part. It was constructed by an artist named Art Fowler, whose original art still hangs throughout the cabin. Amazing!

You may want to spend your days fishing or tubing the creek or exploring the incredible canyons of the Sipsey Wilderness. Perhaps you would enjoy mountain biking the miles of Bankhead National Forest roads near by. Love hiking and backpacking, the Sipsey has many miles of hiking trails.

Love to hunt? Check out the Bankhead National Forest! You can drive just a few miles and hunt on National Forest land.

Enjoy birdwatching? What about a night with no street lights for perfect stargazing? This is the place for you!

There is a full kitchen in both cabins, but if you'd rather not cook, hop in the car and run to Double Springs for a homecooked Italian meal at the Sapore Grill!

There are two bedrooms in the River Art Cabin, the Master bedroom has a king size bed and a private upstairs deck with a sliding glass door. There is a private Master bath also. The second bedroom has a bunk bed.

One of my favorite parts of the place is the Gazebo, a beautiful structure set atop a sandstone bluff overlooking a shoals of Clear Creek about 70 feet below. You can enjoy a sunset with a glass of wine sitting on the gazebo listening to the rippling creek below. Or wake up early and walk down the path to the gazebo with a hot cup of coffee.

You can stroll for miles on our dirt roads or walk down the path to Clear Creek and take a dip in the cool waters that are a tributary to Smith Lake.

Truly remote. This cottage is at the end of the road... literally! You will drive down a small country road for about 4 miles and when the road ends... you are home!

Quaint, lovely, everything we needed.

  • 5 of 5

First off if seclusion is what you are after this is it. Lovely little cabin nestled in the woods away from it all. My 9 year old and I stayed three nights here recently and had a great time. If you want to do a overnight or several days it's perfect for both. We grilled 2 out of the 3 nights on the grill, charcoal and fluid were provided. Bed in the master suite was very comfortable with a great view, you can hear the creek below and it also has a set of twin beds in the other upstairs bedroom. Wrap around porch was great for coffee in the mornings. The trail to the gazebo is well traveled and a nice setup for a evening of relaxing. We hiked the short trail to Clear Creek, it was well marked and found the "secret beach" spent almost a while day their, and a plus is they provide walking sticks which we thought was great. We explored the property and found tons of BlackBerry bushes and a bird that had two cute little babies. Town has a dollar general and a local grocery store that we stocked up on before we came in. Drove to Hunstville, it's only an hour and some minutes away. Overall this was good for the soul and I highly recommend this, we will return. Thank you Mark and Maggie!

Safety Concern - Not What We Expected...

  • 2 of 5

This is not stated in the description, but good to know. The house may not be locked when you arrive. It can be locked while you are at the house, but not when you leave. When leaving, you can use a combination lock on a gate (which someone could easily climb). This combination lock was unfortunately lying in poison oak, so we didn't want to mess with poison oak on our trip.

Whenever we arrived we learned that this place is truly remote (as listed in the description), some talented photographers took these pictures, cleanliness was a concern, and safety was a concern.

Remote: well off the beaten trail, no cell service or wifi (as mentioned in the description)

Talented photographers: they left out little things that make the place not look as good, and had great lighting

Cleanliness concern: we found a dead bug in the master bed

Safety concern: house unlocked upon arrival with no way of locking when leaving the house, no cell service or wifi, combination lock on gate is method of security when leaving (as mentioned above)

"Why do we call it the River Art Cabin? It sits on a bluff overlooking Clear Creek, the 'River' part." This is stated in the description, but unfortunately, it's only the gazebo that overlooks the creek, which is not within viewing distance of the house.

After contemplating what to do upon our arrival and checking out the place, we decided to stay somewhere else. Maggie was kind enough to give us a partial refund, and for that I am grateful. Unfortunately, this just wasn't the place for us, but if all this sounds reasonable to you, I'm sure you may enjoy it.

The main reason I wanted to write this review was to give more of a clear picture of what you’ll be getting: A remote location, time to be disconnected from the world, and gate lock security when away from the house.

Owner's Response: Wow! That hurt. We have several vacation cabins that we rent out and have never had a 2-star review. I try to be so honest with my descriptions and glad you appreciate my cell phone camera skills! I checked on the "poison oak" mentioned near the gate and it was not poison, but instead a flowering sweetpea vine. As I tell all the wonderful guests who stay at this cabin, we live in a safe place. We never lock our own home. Sorry that you guys did not try staying for at least one night to experience this magical place, the gazebo charm, and a stroll down to the creek which my grandson and I call our most peaceful place in all the land! Guess most folks love the seclusion and choose our cabin for that reason... and others prefer a more cityscape place. Hope you had a safe trip home. Maggie

Great in nature stay!

  • 5 of 5

House was really spacious with everything we needed. Gazebo in front was really cute. Creek and beach was easy walk! About 20 minutes or so to hikes in the forest. An hour to Dismal Canyon. Host was really friendly and nice always staying in communication to make sure we knew how to get there and had everything we needed. Hoping we can go back again!

Secluded cottage snuggled into nature.

  • 5 of 5

This has been a very nice break for my husband and I. We have enjoyed every minute.

We had the extra benefit of a full moon that we watched from the balcony. I think you have a couple of Whip-poor-wills around, and one loved the full moon so much he let us know all night long.😜?

Even when it rained the rolling thunder was very soothing. Listening to the rain from the swing on the gazebo was especially relaxing.

Every night we went outside and could see the stars and constellations. Make sure you bring your constellation expert....because it is a magical show to see all the stars in the sky.

The Gazebo ...can’t say enough. You just have to experience it.

The secret beach is so neat and secluded! We had our own private beach with no one else around.

I hope your other guest enjoy it s much as we did.

We would defiantly stay again..and again...and again!

Very relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This is a really relaxing getaway. It was clean and nicely decorated. We hiked about 2 miles down the creek which was a fun and challenging event. I would recommend this for a eeekend stay I would consider it perfect if there was a closer place to fish, overall excellent.

Sweet little cabin.

  • 5 of 5

Very peaceful, quiet cabin. Nicely kept, all the amenities we needed. Remote location but owner provided good directions. Only about 30-45 minutes to some of the Sipsey trailheads.
