About Nicolaas C.J. van Beek

Hello, I'm Anne! I was born in the USA, but have enjoyed living in Amsterdam for the past 39 years. My husband and I have traveled extensively in the past - US, north Africa, the Himalaya area, and much of Europe, and now enjoy our many interests here at home - art, music, languages, other cultures & philosophies, the art of horsemanship, and meaningful studies ----and I especially enjoy making our guests feel at home! Our guest apartment is the ground floor of our house, and has a private separate entrance onto the street, and everything to make your feel at home, in the 'Best of Both Worlds' - Nature at your doorstep, and Culture within easy access. I believe that both are needed, for an optimal quality of life. I will be happy to provide you with any help, tips, etc. that you may need, for a wonderful stay. Enjoy!

Nicolaas C.J. van Beek purchased this apartment in 1984

Why Nicolaas C.J. van Beek chose Amsterdam City

When my husband and I got married, we were living in the center of Amsterdam in a narrow street, and we were looking for a place in a greener neighborhood, where we could raise a child in a safe environment and still be in Amsterdam with all its interesting facilities and cultural offerings. Being so close to the Amsterdam Forest proved to be a wonderful choice. My family has enjoyed walking, cycling, horseback riding and picnics and so much more here, for many years. In the fall, the colors are beautiful, and you can enjoy a brisk walk in clean air; in winter, an unspoiled wonderland if it snows, and we have skated on the rowing course when it froze. And all this just right around the corner from our house, and from the ground floor which we now rent out as 'Best of Both Worlds' - come visit, and you'll see why!

What makes this apartment unique

All the above reasons made us choose this property for our home, and now the ground floor is for the enjoyment of our guests. We have loved living here for more than 30 years, and appreciate the broad views over the Forest from our spacious balconies op the top floor; you can hear the songs of many kinds of birds, because of the nearness of the Forest, and the sunsets from our upstairs views are fantastic. So many amenities are within reach - supermarket (Aldi) within walking distance (5 min), a fantastic pub/cafe just down the street (Anno 1890), and great takeaways (Chinese, Indonesian) and restaurants right in the neighborhood, just a few minutes walk from the apartment. By bike you can reach a larger supermarkt (Jumbo) and all sorts of shops, in 5 minutes. Or take a leisurely walk to these shops (12 minutes). We have 2 bicycles in the back terrace/garden, free for the use of our guests. You can ride the frequent busses (every 8 to 10 min.) into the center of Amsterdam - the museum quarter is just 15 min. away. So enjoy all the benefits of 'the Best of Both Worlds' and see why we love living here!

This is our second time staying here.

We love that Stephen leaves us a nice loaf of bread and eggs and a few more goodies in the refrigerator. The bikes are definitely a benefit! Riding to Amsterdamse Bos is so beautiful. Thanks again for a wonderful stay.

Not in downtown Amsterdam, but right on bus line and biking into town about 25 minutes easy ride. Right next to beautiful amsterdamseBos park. Great biking and hiking, picnicking. All the modern conveniences, nice small kitchen, nice bathroom and living area. Original art. Small fenced backyard. Bikes included. Was perfect for 2.

Wonderful Amsterdam

  • 4 of 5

Had a fantastic time in Amsterdam. The apartment is located on a main road and immediately next to it is a cycle lane so be alert when you step outside. It was clean and tidy with a plethora of information about Amsterdam. The guidebook for the apartment had useful notes of the area and how to commute in the area.Stephen greeted us on our arrival and took us through everything he explained the easiest way to commute into Amsterdam and what to find in the locality. There are plenty of food shops a selection of restaurants' especially good is Cafe 1890 about ten doors away, the food was good and the staff excellent. The apartment could use a few more wine glasses plates etc apart from this it was ideal for our trip.We enjoyed not being in Amsterdam central it was a relaxing apartment to have after a full day in Amsterdam. Just behind the apartment is Amsterdam Bos a large forested park that you could utilise for walks.

A lovely week engaged by our apartment.

Fantastic

  • 5 of 5

I have nothing, but great things to say about our stay. Stephen was a great communicator. The accomodations were perfect for my husband and me. The location was very close to public transit. Our host provided a few groceries (bread, jam, eggs, juice, etc), which we really appreciated. I also appreciated being outside the city proper. Amstelveen is very accessible to city center, while offering a more local vibe.

Best Place to Stay in Amsterdam

  • 5 of 5

We considered staying in the city centre but fortunately we read the great reviews and chose Amstelveen instead. Visits to the city confirmed our decision as the density and noise is not our style. We also appreciated being on one level (couple of stairs down to bedroom) as compared to the multi story, narrow staired buildings typical of downtown accommodation. Makes moving luggage a snap.

Conveniently located near the bus and tram routes, access to Amsterdam takes between 20 and 30 minutes. Tip - although the tram station is a little further than the bus stop, trams move much quicker in the city centre and thus take less time and the station is directly across from the grocery supermarket.

Our host Stephen was most helpful and provided excellent advice on travelling from the airport. He met us at the apartment and spent a good deal of time answering all of our questions. Very friendly, helpful and speaks English fluently (as does almost everyone in the NL).

The apartment borders a park with walking and bike trails too numerous to mention. The nearby little restaurant 1890 is quaint and very Dutch with good food and reasonable prices. Note that they expect if you are a couple that you take a table for two not four, even if they appear not to be busy. Also, pay at the bar when you are finished your meal.

The most important considererations for us when choosing accommodation apart from location are a comfortable bed, hot shower and the ability to adjust temperature to cool at night. The property hits a home run on all of these, with individual room temperature controlled by opening or closing the radiator valves. Like many places, the wi-if slows down during the busy 7pm - 9pm Netflix period but was still acceptable.

If you are looking for a roomy, comfortable, cost effective and centrally located place to stay in Amsterdam, you can't go wrong booking with Stephen.

Location

Nearest Beach
15 Miles
in summer, 'city beaches' in 15 min. Sea beach:
Car: not necessary

If you love nature: a must-see, as a break from the busy tourist attractions of central Amsterdam, is the beautiful Amsterdam Forest park, just steps away from the apartment. By foot or by bike, a green paradise (or in the autumn, enjoy the fall colours!). Loads of active and less-active possibilities and special attractions. Stables and riding schools in the area, kayaking or canoeing on the waterways, or visit the Goat Farm for home-made goat's cheese and ice cream! Information on the Amsterdam Forest is available in the apartment.

For lovers of modern art: not just the museums of Amsterdam are easily reached, but also the art offerings of Amstelveen: a quick bike ride or bus ride (10-12 minutes) in the opposite direction will bring you to the famous Cobra Museum (modern art: permanent collection of the famous Cobra movement, and various changing exhibitions of prominent modern artists), and several minutes walk further to the Van der Togt Museum, a hidden jewel of modern art (various guest exhibitions of renowned national and international artists, and fabulous permanent collection of modern glass, sculpture, bronze and paintings).
