Hello, I'm Anne! I was born in the USA, but have enjoyed living in Amsterdam for the past 39 years. My husband and I have traveled extensively in the past - US, north Africa, the Himalaya area, and much of Europe, and now enjoy our many interests here at home - art, music, languages, other cultures & philosophies, the art of horsemanship, and meaningful studies ----and I especially enjoy making our guests feel at home! Our guest apartment is the ground floor of our house, and has a private separate entrance onto the street, and everything to make your feel at home, in the 'Best of Both Worlds' - Nature at your doorstep, and Culture within easy access. I believe that both are needed, for an optimal quality of life. I will be happy to provide you with any help, tips, etc. that you may need, for a wonderful stay. Enjoy!
Anne van Beek-Rehder purchased this apartment in 1984
When my husband and I got married, we were living in the center of Amsterdam in a narrow street, and we were looking for a place in a greener neighborhood, where we could raise a child in a safe environment and still be in Amsterdam with all its interesting facilities and cultural offerings. Being so close to the Amsterdam Forest proved to be a wonderful choice. My family has enjoyed walking, cycling, horseback riding and picnics and so much more here, for many years. In the fall, the colors are beautiful, and you can enjoy a brisk walk in clean air; in winter, an unspoiled wonderland if it snows, and we have skated on the rowing course when it froze. And all this just right around the corner from our house, and from the ground floor which we now rent out as 'Best of Both Worlds' - come visit, and you'll see why!
All the above reasons made us choose this property for our home, and now the ground floor is for the enjoyment of our guests. We have loved living here for more than 30 years, and appreciate the broad views over the Forest from our spacious balconies op the top floor; you can hear the songs of many kinds of birds, because of the nearness of the Forest, and the sunsets from our upstairs views are fantastic. So many amenities are within reach - supermarket (Aldi) within walking distance (5 min), a fantastic pub/cafe just down the street (Anno 1890), and great takeaways (Chinese, Indonesian) and restaurants right in the neighborhood, just a few minutes walk from the apartment. By bike you can reach a larger supermarkt (Jumbo) and all sorts of shops, in 5 minutes. Or take a leisurely walk to these shops (12 minutes). We have 2 bicycles in the back terrace/garden, free for the use of our guests. You can ride the frequent busses (every 8 to 10 min.) into the center of Amsterdam - the museum quarter is just 15 min. away. So enjoy all the benefits of 'the Best of Both Worlds' and see why we love living here!
Great appartnent, clean and well kept, friendly reception late at night with a few eats laid out for us on arrival then left to get on with it while only being an email away from help if required. Location was just perfect, on a main bus route between the airport and city centre and all roads had cycle lanes to get out and explore with the apartment bikes. 10 mins into city centre. Some local shops and a pub close by. Also on the edge of a large wooded park, great to get out for a morning cycle or run away from the hustle and bustle of the city centre! Defo recommend!!
Sadly, Anne, the owner had taken quite ill when we arrived so her husband Nicholas was there to greet us and show us the apartment (Anne, your are still in our prayers for a full recovery). The apartment is in a nice neighborhood, fairly clean, nicely furnished, and everything was in working condition. Everything we needed was provided including coffee, a few staples, laundry detergent, small amount of bath soap and enough toilet paper for a couple of days. There is plenty of closet space and it was very convenient to have hangers for our clothes. Washing machine is provided, however, I could not find any instructions so I used my translator and was able to do a couple of loads of laundry. The bedroom is down a steep flight of four steps so we slept in the pull out couch because I have problems getting up and down stairs. All the linen and pillows were provided for the couch and we slept fairly comfortably. There is a small store about 5 blocks away and a larger one about 10 minutes walk. Bus stop with buses to the city center was less than a minute's walk across the street and it took about 20 minutes to get to the center. We enjoyed having dinner at a family restaurant on the next corner with great food and good prices. Nicholas or his son were always available to answer any questions just by knocking on their door. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay in this cozy apartment and highly recommend it.
Our vacation couldn't have been any better. Anne made sure we could find our way around town with lots of maps and she even went out of her way to locate extra places for us to eat and shop since we had eating restrictions that could make our stay more difficult. That was above and beyond what we had expected. That was awesome. Eating Gluten Free and finding Vegan options is possible if you know who to ask and where to look.
Anne helped us in so many ways it made for a wonder visit. We rode the bikes and even found our way to the bike rental place by the park to get more air in the tires when the pump seemed a bit odd to us. Museums were so close with the bus line steps away. We loved having the short ride into the center of the Museums and shopping but the quiet streets to come home too.
Jumbo market down the way for all our food needs we a fun bike ride away. We had brought our own market bags/backpacks. (But Anne also had 2 for us). The bus took us all over and that was never more than a few moments wait. Truly a wonderful experience. We cant wait to go back. Anne and her hubby made us feel most welcome and helped us navigate the town and language barrier like was none.
Happy memories, a beautiful city and fantastic people made for the best vacation my partner and I could ever ask for. We were welcomed and made to feel at home. Thank you. Hope you get well soon. Best Wishes now and always.
We have just spent 4 wonderful days the "Best of Both Worlds one bedroom apartment. It is located in a wonderful residential area, only 20 minutes by bus to Central Station, which by the way, stops right outside the door.
Anne is a very pleasant host who met us on arrival, showed us thru the apartment and provided us with a file of bus schedules, maps, attractions etc.
The apartment which has been totally renovated , very clean and offers a full kitchen with new appliances and all amenities you would need. The bathroom is tastfully done in grey slate with a modern tub and shower. There is a small rear courtyard to enjoy a glass of wine and there are 2 bicycles which we used to bike to Amsterdamse Bos park, a 1,000 hectare urban forest , offering miles of bike paths which is located right around the corner from the apartment.
About 100 yards down the street is a fabulous restaurant called Cafe 1890 which serves excellent food in a great atmosphere at reasonable prices, which we frequented several times during our stay.
All in all, " Best of Both Worlds" is an excellent choice when visiting Amsterdam. Thank you Anne for your hospitality.
We were very pleasantly surprised by the quality of this apartment . Everything we needed was available and we felt very much at home. Anne was so helpful in directing us to places and going that extra mile for us. The ease of transportation to city center, availability of grocery shopping and restaurant so close by was amazing. We would definitely recommend this place to our family & friends. Thanks Anne, hope to see you again. Mike & Julie S.
The location of the "Best of Both Worlds" apartment was great for someone traveling by car. We were able to park free just one block away from our lodging, and the Metro was only about a ten minute walk, (the same direction as the large grocery store). We ate at the same restaurant, "Anno 1890" five of the six nights we were there, since the food was great, inexpensive, and the staff went out of their way to Mae us feel welcome. Oh, and it was only 1/2 block away! he apartment is very roomy, appointed nicely, and had a washing machine, handy for folks traveling an extended period of time. Staples were in the kitchen for use, on a "take some, leave some" system. We will definitely stay here again if we travel to Amsterdam. One last thing, the "Amsterdamse Bos Forest was a pleasant place to visit, and we were lucky enough to see the Scttish Highland Cows, including one that was only about six on this old.
If you love nature: a must-see, as a break from the busy tourist attractions of central Amsterdam, is the beautiful Amsterdam Forest park, just steps away from the apartment. By foot or by bike, a green paradise (or in the autumn, enjoy the fall colours!). Loads of active and less-active possibilities and special attractions. Stables and riding schools in the area, kayaking or canoeing on the waterways, or visit the Goat Farm for home-made goat's cheese and ice cream! Information on the Amsterdam Forest is available in the apartment.
For lovers of modern art: not just the museums of Amsterdam are easily reached, but also the art offerings of Amstelveen: a quick bike ride or bus ride (10-12 minutes) in the opposite direction will bring you to the famous Cobra Museum (modern art: permanent collection of the famous Cobra movement, and various changing exhibitions of prominent modern artists), and several minutes walk further to the Van der Togt Museum, a hidden jewel of modern art (various guest exhibitions of renowned national and international artists, and fabulous permanent collection of modern glass, sculpture, bronze and paintings).
