Great Location! Very accommodating people!

  • 5 of 5

if you want to be VERY close to some of the best hikes in Shenandoah National Park, this is a great place. We were able to stroll down the road in our flip flops to cool off in the stream. But be warned: because this cottage is just steps away from a popular trail and swimming hole, there will be lots of traffic around on the weekends (We were there in August). The amount of people trying to park nearby took us by surprise. The evenings are very peaceful though.

The cottage isn't fancy, but it had what we needed. The owner Bill was extremely accommodating--if something was wrong he was more than happy to make it right. Also the neighbor Scott was very friendly and knowledgeable about the area. He gave us the impression that we could knock on his door if we needed anything.

Overall this was a very nice place to stay. My family had a great time.

Great location!!!

  • 4 of 5

Was happy with the location. White Oak Canyon trail head was just a two minute walk. We also had bears in the backyard every morning....

However there was 4 of us and we only had 2 towels 2 washclothes and 2 hand towels and the phone (landline) did not work the whole stay. This is a problem because there is absolutely no cell service and closest town is 15 miles. The matresses were clean but need replaced on bunkbed. We enjoyed our stay and hopefully Bill can get all these things fixed. He was really helpful but he doesn't live close. Needs to update some things and hire better cleaning service. Bathtub was dirty and floors unmoped. Also yard was unmowed and growing tall. We would rent again because of location. Beautiful scenery.....

Owner's Response: Thanks for your feedback. The guests informed us that us the phone was not working. I immediately called the phone company, but unfortunately the first appointment available for a technician to come out to troubleshoot was four days. Our phone is provided for local and emergency purposes only. Also, we have hired a new cleaning service.

Really close to hiking trails, but just ok

  • 3 of 5

Let me say on the positive side; it was as advertised. It was close to the white oak trailhead, which was an amazing hike. It was remote and quiet, and a mama bear and her two cubs loved to eat from the apple tree in the back yard, which my family and I loved watching. Bill even let us check in early, was great at communicating, and it was well-stocked. On the down side, the window air conditioner tried its best, but isn’t strong enough to really keep the place cool; some fans might help. The top bunk was missing, so one of our kids slept on the couch, which was under the air conditioner, so he didn’t really mind. The main bedroom’s mattress really does sag quite considerably. And as the previous reviewer stated, while it seems like it gets surface cleaned, I don’t think its been cleaned well in awhile. There is visible grime, hair and dead bugs in corners, behind faucets, doors and windows. My biggest problem is it had some bugs, and not just the kind that fly in while the door is open. I hesitated leaving this review, but in the end decided I would have appreciated a heads up.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your feedback. Our accommodations are small; however the window air conditioner can't keep up on the hotter days. Also, we expect our accommodations to be very clean and have hired a new cleaning service.

Good for being outdoors.

  • 3 of 5

If you are going to be hiking the trails and just need the basics, then this is your place. The next door neighbors charge $10 to park in their lawn for the hikers. So it's good for that. The A/C will not cool the place on a hot day, and being big soccer fans...we wanted to catch some games on TV while there. "World Cup". Every 4 years. No TV/ Dish as advertised. We did get to see some bears in the the back yard tho...very cool. The person who takes care of the place lives on the property. But we never met him.

Owner's Response: We do have Dish TV as advertised! The guest notified me there was no TV/Dish service and we tried troubleshooting remotely without success. I called DishTV and a technician installed a NEW receiver within a few days (which was the earliest an appointment was available for our remote location). Unfortunately this was completed a couple of days after the guests had checked out. I understand our guests' concern with watching the World Cup; however we addressed the broken receiver as quickly as possible. And of course, we have FREE parking at our accommodations!

Nice

  • 4 of 5

We were there the first week of May. We really liked the location. It is just a few yards from the White Oak trail and then there's another trail further up the road. Weather was perfect. There is no cell phone service which did not bother us at all. But it is a long way (30-45 min.) from towns, grocery stores, etc. Bring bug spray!!!!!! The gnats are big and hungry and they will constantly swarm you if you don't use bug spray. We had such a great time hiking and sightseeing that we are going back next year, just in a different location. Virginia is a beautiful state with lots to offer. The only concerns we had as far as the cottage is concerned: the bed sags in the middle, the toilet moves, and the AC unit is too small to cool the whole cabin in a reasonable time; it took several hours before the bedroom was cooled where we could sleep comfortably. We learned to leave it on while we were out in order to get it cooled down enough. And it was clean but needs a spring cleaning (under and behind the furniture). We enjoyed our stay though.
