Monhegan Island, one of the country's foremost artists colonies, is located several miles off of mid-coast Maine. It offers some of the most dramatic scenery and best birding on the east coast. The island is about 1 1/4 miles long and 3/4 mile wide, and features 17 miles of hiking trails which lead through spruce forests out to bold cliffs that run the length of the back side of the island. Most of the island is a privately managed nature preserve that will remain forever wild. Particularly in the spring and fall, Monhegan is a destination for birdwatchers who come from around the world to witness the migration of many species of birds on their way north and south. It is a destination for artists as well, who come to paint the natural beauty of the island and the traditional fishing village. The island does have a wonderful lighthouse and museum, an art gallery, coffee houses, several restaurants, two general stores and gift shops.
