Point Comfort is a small, privately owned point on the east shore of Lake George. It is a rustic traditional Adirondack camp that has been changed very
little since it was built in the late 1880s. We have opted to preserve what we have loved about our place from its past as it was left to us by our ancestors through five generations. Which means we have not opted to update with all the modern conveniences and amenities you might expect in a vacation rental. This place is for those who want to have fun in the sun, swim, hike and relax in a traditional, natural setting. Being at Point Comfort is closer to camping than to staying in a resort. If you are looking for modern conveniences and spa treatment this is not the place.
The house is roughly built but comfortable. There is no insulation or even interior wall finishes (the studs are bare on the inside). There is running water and electricity. There is no microwave, dishwasher or television. You won’t need a TV. You will spend all your time swimming in the clean, beautiful waters of Lake George from the private docks or at the public beach on the other side of the Point, sunning yourself, canoeing, hiking, etc. The house is on a road that dead-ends in the NY State Adirondack Park. After that there is nothing but woods and mountains. It is a great location to enjoy the outdoors. There is a lagoon behind the house that is home to much pond life and is fun to explore or just gaze at from the deck.
The house has five bedrooms and an outdoor sleeping porch. The bedrooms sleep eight (one bedroom with a full bed, two bedrooms with two twin beds each, and two bedrooms with one twin bed each). The unscreened porch sleeps four. The kitchen is modestly supplied with silverware, plate ware, and
cookware. There is a toaster and coffee maker. The bathroom is available only from the side porch.
Swimming in the bay from the docks is great for kids and adults since it is about three feet deep and gradually gets deeper. Swimming off the point is fun and there are several rock piles you can stand on and rest. The beach next door is an ideal spot for small children, because they can build in the sand and play in the shallow water. The drop-off is extremely gradual. There is a life guard on duty during the in-season during the day. The beach is especially nice early in the morning and late in the day.
The Erie is a deck overlooking the 'Lagoon' (wetlands) It is a hide away from people, noise, and the wind that comes in off the lake. Great for reading a book, sun bathing, warming up after a swim, or nature watching. You will probably see a Great Blue Heron and many other birds, as well as turtles, frogs and beavers. There are identification books in the house for those who are curious or are serious watchers.
This property has been in my family for six generations.
Point Comfort is located near the end of the Pilot Knob Road which dead ends into the wilderness of the Adirondack State Park. This is a quiet retreat away from the city. Swim, sun, relax, canoe, hike. There are trailheads for several great hikes and mountains to climb within walking distance. There is a trail around the lake to reach remote woods for picnics or cliff jumping. Boat from home to many great destinations on Lake George including Log Bay with Shelving Rock Falls, Calves Pen, Bolton, Diamond Point, Lake George Village. Or drive 25 miles to the bustling tourist destination of Lake George Village where you can visit theme parks, miniature golf, wax museums, video arcades, shopping, Fort William Henry, etc.
