This new contemporary cottage sits on a secluded, idyllic, direct ocean front site. The 12.7 acre site is on Great Cove off Englishman's Bay - bring your kayaks or canoes! The house itself is at the end of 1600 ft driveway that winds through the woods. The house with its stunning decks and screen porches faces south to the ocean, only 105’ away. The site is densely forested with tall pines. Standing on the bold rocky beach there is no other sign of civilization other than the lobster pot buoys in Great Cove. The current owner designed the house. It includes only the most current technology, highest quality construction. The home and grounds were designed around a philosophy of minimal maintenance while providing a warm, secure, comfortable, serene, environment. The house has two bedrooms and two full baths, one of which has a tub. There is a large loft that can easily sleeps 4 more people - so bring your own cots or sleeping bags. See pictures of the loft.
The home is winterized with oil fired hot air for great comfort regardless of the weather. A propane gas fireplace also provides warmth and a soothing ambiance. This House was custom built by us in 2004. We chose the location because of its remoteness to civilization. Washington County is special because it has low population density but easy access. The town of Roque Bluffs, where our house is located has only a few hundred inhabitants. Yet, we are only about 15 minutes away from Machias where there is some shopping and restaurants. The house is on a quiet, private, serene 12 acre site with view of Great Cove, only about 105 feet away. Roque Island is about a mile away and to the left of is the bold Atlantic. You can watch the lobster boats tend their pots. The house itself is a warm comfortable modern building with all the modern conveniences except a land line for telephone. (Cell service is limited but there is Wi-Fi).
We rented this house for two months in 2014. So comfortable, clean and spacious with a great view and beach. The house has all of the amenities and a well stocked kitchen. Being close to Roque Bluffs State Park, Jasper Beach and many more beautiful places kept us entertained even while we had our own beautiful place to relax in total quiet and privacy. Lots of hiking in this region and plenty to do outdoors. Machias is close for shopping and eating out but you're only an hour from Bar Harbor and Acadia. We were also close to Calais at the Canadian border, and Campebello Island across the bridge from Lubec. Such a beautiful area! And dark enough for night sky photography. With this wonderful house, this was the perfect place for our photography and painting endeavors and we would go again without hesitation. Jim, the caretaker, was very helpful and personable and gave us lots of ideas of places to see and we now consider him, along with the owners, to be friends.
Very decent price for so much! For a start the house is in great condition with that fresh new feel. The main part we enjoyed ,is the , literally miles of isolated coastline, starting of course with our own beach. It was an amazing chance to recharge in an untouched part of this state, yet only 20 min to the supermarket! Special shoutout to the pure 'well water ' crisp out of the bedrock. Best regards to mr fortini, was always there to help! All the best m.b. New york
Last year we rented this place for 2 weeks and again this year for a month. The house is roomy and comfortable. Although there is no mechanical air conditioning, none is needed in Roque Bluffs. The house sits directly on the ocean and the breeze across the cool waters of the Atlantic are enough to keep it all comfortable. Not far from the house is FDR's summer getaway at Campobello Island. Downeast Maine benefits from Nature's AC, and is the part of Maine where the wealthy retreated during the summer months, to escape summer temperatures in the big cities.
When the urge to explore hits you, there's lots of sightseeing to do, hikes to take, salt & fresh-water swimming and sampling of freshly caught sea food. It's all nearby — this is the REAL, unspoiled Maine! This is a great getaway and wonderful spot for reading books you have been saving for such an occasion.
It more than exceeded our expectations. If you like solitude, this is for you!! The only sounds heard were the occasional lobster boat pulling in traps, or an eagle flying over. The deck is fantastic and it is a great place for a good read.Caretaker and owner were very responsive and the cottage was up to date and well maintained.
My husband and I traveled here to spend our honeymoon 3 months after the wedding - our goal - to get away from the hustle and bustle of life and relax in a nature setting. This vacation rental was everything that we were looking for and more. We really enjoyed the house and location. We were able to drive throughout the area sightseeing yet come back to a quiet, pretty, and inviting home. Beats a hotel by a million. Every convenience needed is in the house and you only need to bring clothes and groceries once your arrive. We cooked meals every day and had fun doing it. You can walk down to the rocky beach, play in the water or collect sea shells, sit on the deck and watch the lobster boats, or relax in front of the fire on a cold night. Perfect place to read a good book and dabble in a few hobbies. I recommend it for anyone who wants to get away from the hustle and bustle. You can drive an hour to get that if you need it.
True privacy awaits you here. The only sounds we heard were a lobster
boat in the morning and the call of a loon in the evening. The house is
fresh and maintained to a high standard. The kitchen is a little larger
than appears on the photos and the bathrooms are very nice. The heating
fans for cool mornings work great. The fireplace is also a great touch
to remove an early morning chill or to enjoy a romantic dinner. The
decks are huge. The back deck is by the cove and gets sun most of the
day. If you need more, the sun sets on the front of the house which has
a covered deck. The screened in dining area is lovely although we were
fortunate, there were very little biting insects. The grocery store is
an easy fifteen minute drive (Rite-Aid, McDonald's, Family Dollar and a
beer store). During our stay in July 2015 there was an organic grocery
store and a wine and cheese shop (imported and domestic) in town. Jim
the caretaker will give you as much or as little attention as you need.
Thoughtful chap. The smell of the sea and the forest are a great
combination. We saw one bald eagle, a deer and a hare. If you enjoy
solitude and can be away from your phone you will enjoy this location.
Peaceful, wonderful ocean views, terrific stars in the nighttime canopy and very restful: all apt descriptors of this treasured location.
For anyone who is mobility impaired, the house is ideal—easily accessed via 2 steps from outside, with everything close-at-hand and easily navigated. There is no ramp, but once inside, there is plenty of space for wheelchair navigation. The house is a spacious open concept plan with numerous doors and windows that allow access to the outdoors from every point. Porches all around allow for great views, catching some rays and an evening cocktail.
The Master bedroom & bath, main bath and guest bedroom on the first floor provide great space for 2 couples or a family of 4. There is a spacious open loft on the second floor, accessed by a central staircase that can be used as overflow sleeping space on cots or air mattresses for the young-at-heart. As an open loft, it is subject to any noise or activities that are happening on the 1st floor living area. For lobster lovers, a local lobsterman and his wife sell their fresh, live catch directly to the public—Mother Shuckers—and have the tastiest catch, ever—just 3 miles down the road!
Previously mentioned, Roque Bluffs State Park offers both salt and fresh water swimming, enjoyed by our granddaughter; and Campobello Island Canada, are not to be missed (a driver’s license—not a Passport—is only necessary to go there and return). This is the part of Maine that most people never see: 20’ tides, reversing falls, harbors filled with working lobster boats sitting on a mud bottom at low tide, Eagles and naturally wild landscapes like the Great Wass Island Preserve. This is also where those succulent, wild Maine Blueberries grow. If you’re lucky, you can get some when you visit!
Eastport Maine is about 45 min East and is a beautiful coastal town with lots of shopping and restaurants.
Mount Desert Island is a little over an hour West and features the Acadia National Park and the fantastic tourist destination town of Bar Harbor with shopping, restaurants, whale watching and many other activities.
Great Cove Golf Course is only about a mile away from the house. This is a lovely 9 hole course.
The Town of Ellsworth is about an hour west and has shopping , theaters, and all types of activities and attractions.
The Town of Machias, about 15 minutes away, has grocery stores, restaurants, churches.
