Certainly one of the best ways to discover the unforgettable charms of The TUAMOTU Archipelago.
The “motu” Fafarua belongs to my family for several generations, but was not inhabited since I started to make this wild and isolated paradise our favorite vacation place.
For more than 15 years we worked to clean it up and build our house, year after year, in full respect of environment.
Being a retired Flight Attendant, I have travelled in many countries as well as in the whole Polynesia. Born from an old Tahitian family, I know many things about French Polynesia and our Tikehau atoll, and like to share my knowledge with people visiting us.
PARIZOT Evaline purchased this villa in 1906
I hope to give to our gests the opportunity to live something very different of the usual touristic trips.
Receiving only one couple or one limited group at a time, allowed complete privacy and gives us the possibility to offer a very personalized service. We invite our guests to let us know, as soon as they have booked, if there is something special that can we prepare or organize to make their stay as convenient as possible.
My wish is to make our guests feel day after day, not only the incomparable beauty of the place, or the stress free comfort of our house and our service, but also the authentic contact with our environment and our Polynesian way of life.
I cannot say enough about how much we loved our two weeks with Patrick, Eva and Nalani at Fafarua Lodge. We came to Fafarua to celebrate my 50th birthday. We wanted to do something with our entire family that would be a memory no one would forget – and Fafarua delivered! We have 5 children ages 14 -24, two are married and one grandchild. We brought the entire family and Patrick, Eva and Nalani took care of us as if we were their close family. Fafarua is an amazing place. It is so pristine with so many amazing things to experience. And we loved that we were on an island where it was just our family with Patrick, Eva and Nalani!
Every morning you awake to fresh homemade bread, eggs and fruit. There are so many things to do and experience and Patrick is passionate about making sure you experience as much of Tikehau as you can. Every day we would load up and go to an isolated beach, snorkeling, scuba, surfing or fishing. It was amazing to fish in 40 foot deep water and have the water be so clear you could watch the fish hitting the hooks! We would come back to a lunch of fish, fruit, and rice/pasta. After lunch we would hang around the lodge swimming, playing on the paddleboards, and getting as much of the sun as we could. Dinners were amazing – everything from fish, steak, chicken, lobster and some of the most amazing desserts we have ever had. Eva is an amazing cook and we looked forward to every meal. We had a number of unique needs – one vegetarian, one celiac, and a couple of that were not real big fish eaters. Patrick and Eva are so accommodating and adjusted to the unique needs of our group.
We loved learning about Tikehau and Polynesia. We loved that Fafarua Lodge is something Patrick and Eva have built on their own over the past 20 years. It is an amazing location and you get to experience island life in way that you would never experience if you were staying at a typical resort. We were introduced to so many interesting parts of island life…preparing bait for fishing, using coconuts in cooking, meeting locals on neighboring islands, planting coconut trees, even hunting for giant coconut crabs in the middle of the night! So many things we would never have even known to ask about. And ending the day paddle boarding out to see a beautiful sunset each night wasn’t too bad either! There was something for everyone to do but we were able to completely relax as well.
When you look at everything that is packed into the experience it rea
I don't even know where to begin...maybe with WOW! We had the most WONDERFUL holiday experience at Tikehau Fafarua Lodge! The weather was perfect, the food was out of this world, the accommodations were lovely, and probably the best part was meeting Patrick and Evaline (the owners), their daughters, and the staff. What incredibly warm, welcoming, fantastic people--all of them! We felt like we were part of their family. We were treated with the utmost kindness and warmth. We did many amazing activities together--things you could never do on your own unless you were a native with lots of knowledge about the area--and yet we still had plenty of time to be alone, or to take a nap, or to stroll the beach at sunset with no other people around for miles. The perfect balance of togetherness and solitude! And again, I want to mention the food. Evaline is the most amazing cook! We never expected to eat the way we did on the motu. Every day, we had fresh fish, freshly baked bread, fresh vegetables, fresh fruits, and interesting local dishes, like breadfruit, baked directly in a coconut shell fire. We felt like we were experiencing French Polynesia the way it should be experienced--from the perspective of the native people who are fortunate enough to live there. I am just so grateful that they were so willing to share their perfect world with us! We thank Patrick and Evaline and the staff for allowing us to be a part of it all.
I had a great stay on this island with my family from 5 to 75 years old. We enjoyed discovering the Polynesian way of life, the wonderful cooking from Eva and Nathalie and being in nature! There are lots of wildlife that you see while walking around the island or at the bird island, snorkeling around the motus or diving at the pass! One highlight of our stay was walking on the reef with Faremate and watching him catch a parrot fish with a spear and opening giant clams for us. Another highlight for my family was snorkeling with the manta rays at the cleaning station. The only thing I would say needs to be improve a little bit is planning the day ahead the activities of the next day. We hope to come back soon!
My daughter and I take an adventure together every year. This year - Polynesian Motu Madness! What’s the review? It’s totally outstanding in every way. Fantastic. Amazing. Completely unique. Everyone you know will be jealous. 5 stars. Stop hesitating and get out your credit card right now! Done.
The question is, who is this experience right for? Things to know:
The house is simple, tastefully decorated, and comfortable but in a cabin-y sort of way. There is solar powered electricity, hot water showers, flush toilets, plenty of fresh water, a propane stove, mosquito nets over the beds, etc. All the basics are covered. Oh and the food is outstanding, if you like fish. I do but my daughter doesn’t. She hates it in fact. But even my fish hating daughter said, “Wow Dad, this fish is goooood.” That Is High Praise.
Are these luxury accommodations? No. More like luxury camping accommodations, in a cabin. Don’t get me wrong; I’m not complaining. I was incredibly well fed. I slept like a baby. I showered every day. It was peaceful. We had a great time. But there were a few discomforts, like one should expect out in nature.
Bugs. I’d say I got about 8-10 mosquito bites over a week even with the nets and repellent. My daughter got 40 or 50. Ug. If you are mosquito attractive, bring the real repellent and be prepared to use it.
Internet/mobile coverage is very poor. I consider this a good thing and so should you. You just flew halfway around the world for a private island experience, right? But if you need regular contact with the outside world it’s intermittent at best. They have a pole with an antenna that connects to the town on another island but it doesn’t work consistently and you shouldn’t rely on it. Just be happy (or sad, as the case may be) when it does make a solid connection.
Hermit crabs are all over the place, even up in the bushes. I thought that was cool, but you might not when you hear them knocking around at night time. If you leave the door open to the house they will wander in and scrabble about on the tile floor all night long.
Are you ready for Fafarua Lodge? You should be: nature-loving, not afraid of a few bugs, like fish, like to swim and snorkel in the ocean, not be put off by a little heat or a little rain. Basically, you should be someone who loves an adventure. My daughter and I do; and we loved Fafarua Lodge.
We wanted to complete our 1 month trip in Polynesia with a strong experience which makes us feel the Polynesian life on a motu and Fafarua was this moment.
We stayed 5 days ( 4 nights) in family (4 adults + 2 Children 8 and 10 years) and we enjoyed a lot our stay. The motu is magnificent, the villa is well arranged and the beach is perfectly equipped with Paddles, Canoes, Deckchairs and Motorboat. The owners, Evaline, Patrick and their team are really eager to share their experience and it is a key point. We really feel in Family.
Evaline is the cook of the house. She prepares a marvelous Polynesian cooking with fishes, coconut milk, local vegetables without forgetting delicious desserts (Lemon pie, chocolate cake, red fruit shortcake). Patrick comes as well on the motu depending on its professional schedule. He also takes pleasure to introduce his piece of heaven to the guests.
The Polynesian family who helps Evaline has always lived at Tikehau on a nearby motu. They know every corner of their atoll. They were born fishermen, they shape flower crowns and sea-shell necklaces as nobody and make the best doughnuts of burgot ( Farao Maoa) of Tikehau :-) As a team, they really did their best to make us spend an authentic stay.
Lost with his Family on a Motu in the middle of Pacific, accommodated in a beautiful villa with water, electricity and surrounded with nice Polynesians ... a good experiment of happiness. What a wonderful stay!
Fafarua Lodge is a tour de force. The team there gives their guests the chance to connect with Nature and its wilderness (breathtaking scenery, a huge and extraordinary lagoon) while providing quality amenities, comfort and services. All that in a place that could have been Robinson Crusoe’s own island.
Eva and Patrick and their crew have a passion for their “motu”, the atoll and its traditions, and clearly love to share it.
We spent two weeks there for a family reunion (three generations, 23 to 77 years of age, from the US and Europe). Each of us could go at his/her own pace, and choose between relaxing, fishing, diving, and discovering the surrounding marvels.
Eva’s cooking was by all means a great experience. Each meal was a feast (various - and very fresh - fish of course, French Polynesian cuisine, but also classic French and North American meals).
This was an extraordinary vacation that we will long remember.
