Rich managed retail stores for over 42 years for 8 national companies in 7 different states. He was a musician for 19 years, is a professional speaker, and has emcee'd two Miss America sanctioned pagents. He is originally from Great Falls.
Trudy has been a public school kitchen manager, bank teller, and retail worker.
We moved back to Montana in 2007 to take care of our 89-year-old mother.
Rich and Trudy Hayes purchased this lodge in 1969
This property was owned by Gary Cooper's parents and then Gary Cooper (the western actor). When he died in 1961, a large cattle rancher bought his land and then sold it to be parcelled up for recreational use in 1969. Our two parcels were purchased in 1969 and the land has been in the family ever since.
My father built the shell of a house as a hobby over the years. When Rich and Trudy moved here in 2007, we began finishing it off - new well, new septic, new plumbing, new electrical, new fencing. All in all, a lot of sweat and tears.
The Bed & Breakfast Addition was added for the 2013 Season with 4 bedrooms and 2 bathrooms, and The Hayes Suite opened in 2015.
We are located on the side of the Missouri River Canyon, about 80 miles downstream from the headwaters of the Missouri River. This is Blue RIbbon Trout fishing with over 4000 'catch-able' trout' (trout that are 10 inches or bigger) per river mile. There is river acces right down the road from our driveway. The mountains across the canyon are in the 5000 foot range, and our dining room has picture windows so you can enjoy it. Or, sit on the deck that wraps around the front dining room. We also offer swings and sheltered picnic table that overlook the canyon and river.
We are 32 miles (on Interstate 15) from The Gates of the Mountains Boat Tours, 43 miles from Giant Springs (Great Falls), and are midway between Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.
We have a herd of deer that visits the property each morning and night, and have 3 rescue horses on property.
We also have audio and video that supports meetings and seminars in the main dining room.
On arrival, our room was ready and the owners made us feel very welcome to be there. We had a nice walk around the country property and took in the view of the Missouri River and the mountainous surroundings. We were treated to a BBQ steak dinner. The meals we had were great with no skimping. They even provided a bag lunch for our day trip to the river. Our room was upgraded and included nice amenities. The lodging was good, the surroundings were good, the food was good, the company was good and the price was good. Who could ask for more? We will go back on our next visit to Montana. Thank you Rich and Trudy for a memorable stay!
