About Laurie & Randy Thompson

My wife and I are residents of Virginia Beach where we have raised 3 children. I grew up in the Valley and attended JMU so this mountain home gives us the perfect opportunity to 'come home.' That's why we decided on the name, 'Duke's Den.' All the school flags in the gameroom represent the schools our children have attended (and some still attending) but you'll notice that JMU dominates the decor.

Laurie & Randy Thompson purchased this house in 2011

Why Laurie & Randy Thompson chose McGaheysville

My wife discovered this home for sale during a JMU Homecoming a few years ago. At the time, our son was attending and playing football for nearby Bridgewater College. This seemed like an ideal place for us to realize a long-held dream to find property in the area. We used it as a home base for his home games and now enjoy coming up to attend JMU games. I wish we had 'before' pictures to share, but picture a lot of orange shag carpet and dark paneling. The renovation was about a 4 month process but we think the results were worth it.

What makes this house unique

The location near the top of the mountain is unbeatable. The open floor plan is very conducive for friends and families to congregate at the large granite counter/bar that opens to the great room and stone fireplace. Great amenities at the property and very convenient to 4 seasons of area activities.

Great House!

  • 5 of 5

We just returned from our son's December graduation at JMU and rented Duke's Den for our family to stay in for the weekend. It was absolutely wonderful and was the perfect house. We would not change a thing! We highly recommend this house for any JMU parents or anyone looking for a great getaway spot!

Family reunion at Duke's Den

  • 4 of 5

You all really thought of everything! We cooked all our meals there and planned for most everything but forgot our Pizza Stone...bingo, it was right there. Thanks so much for helping us spend family time together in this fun place. We loved taking the babies out early to see the deer in the mornings. Nice time of year to be in Western Virginia.

Great location

  • 4 of 5

This house has a great location to both Harrisonburg and Shenandoah National park with only about a 20-30min drive to each. The house itself has awesome space, 2 decks, 4 different good sized rooms and a great open kitchen and living room. The main deck has a charcoal grill and great space to sit out on. The lower level deck is screened in and has a 4 person hot tub which was awesome. Our only complaints were that the lower level porch screen and plexi glass have several large openings so bugs could get in and a large critter potentially could. Additionally, there was some dust and dirt on the floors when we got there, nothing too bad, but we definitely noticed it. Also the first night we killed several bugs in the bedrooms. The house could use some upgrades and TLC, but overall our family had a great time on vacation and you can't beat the convenient location!

House needs work and a good cleaning

  • 2 of 5

Our stay started with having to clean the main bathroom because there was diarrhea underneath the toilet seat from the previous guests. The floors were turning the bottom of our socks brown. The carpets feel like they need a good steam cleaning. Ran the dishwasher twice and the dishes were still dirty so we started washing them by hand. Also every time you try to load the dishwasher it tries to fall out of the frame. The dishwasher and stove need to be replaced. The dryer has rust on the inside and the outside. A part of it actually broke while we were there and my husband fixed it. The house does not have central air conditioning. The two upstairs bedrooms have either a portable air-conditioning unit or window unit which were both very loud so my kids couldn't sleep at night unless I turned it off and then the rooms would get hot. The entire main floor is being run off a ductless air conditioning wall unit which means the master bedroom tends to stay on the warm side because it's on the opposite side. The boxspring was shot on the master bed. Every time you moved it made creaking noises so we hardly slept. I actually ended up starting sleeping on the couch. There was so much dust on the ceiling fans that we actually had to clean the one in the master bedroom because the stuff is falling off of it. The basement has a very old dehumidifier downstairs and it's not doing a very good job and it's very loud so the basement is extremely humid. As a result the house has a very musty smell, so we found the best thing was to close the door to the basement to try to keep the smell down there. Also if you have guests staying downstairs there's no air conditioning unit downstairs. The ping-pong table and foosball table are both being held together with duct tape and electrical tape and that includes the pads for the ping-pong. The screens around the enclosed porch where the hot tub is is ripped and the plexiglass is broken out so the mosquitoes still get in. The screen door to the main deck needs to be replaced as the frame is bent from opening and closing it so many times so bugs would get in where it was bent. Now don't get me wrong the owners were an absolute joy to deal with and the house has a really good location. It has a really nice breeze since it's at the top of the mountain. There were lots of animals to see around the property which we really enjoyed. Overall the house just needs a lot of TLC and appliance upgrades.

Owner's Response: While we appreciate guests calling our attention to problems they see, we ask very specifically that, upon arrival, if they notice anything not up to their standards, to please call our property manager to rectify the situation. His contact information is provided with check-in info and is at the house. We don't want any guests to endure problems when we have a property manager on call to handle them. Though we live over 200 miles from this home, my wife drove up after the guests departed to examine the house and address any concerns not handled by the property manager. I could address or dispute each claim presented by this guest, but suffice to say, that the stove, the dishwasher, the dryer and the dehumidifier all work perfectly. The carpet and the beautiful hardwood floors are clean. After 32 reviews since being with HomeAway/VRBO, we enjoy a 4 out of 5-star rating. We appreciate each of our guests and sincerely want them to enjoy our home.
