About Laurie & Randy Thompson

My wife and I are residents of Virginia Beach where we have raised 3 children. I grew up in the Valley and attended JMU so this mountain home gives us the perfect opportunity to 'come home.' That's why we decided on the name, 'Duke's Den.' All the school flags in the gameroom represent the schools our children have attended (and some still attending) but you'll notice that JMU dominates the decor.

Laurie & Randy Thompson purchased this house in 2011

Why Laurie & Randy Thompson chose Shenandoah Valley

My wife discovered this home for sale during a JMU Homecoming a few years ago. At the time, our son was attending and playing football for nearby Bridgewater College. This seemed like an ideal place for us to realize a long-held dream to find property in the area. We used it as a home base for his home games and now enjoy coming up to attend JMU games. I wish we had 'before' pictures to share, but picture a lot of orange shag carpet and dark paneling. The renovation was about a 4 month process but we think the results were worth it.

What makes this house unique

The location near the top of the mountain is unbeatable. The open floor plan is very conducive for friends and families to congregate at the large granite counter/bar that opens to the great room and stone fireplace. Great amenities at the property and very convenient to 4 seasons of area activities.

Great Choice for Large Family Attending JMU Graduation

  • 4 of 5

Duke's Den was the perfect size house for our family of 7, and 2 more people could've easily stayed comfortably. It was large enough for everyone to spread out, but not too large to navigate. The two upstairs bedrooms share a large bathroom with double sinks, and the other two bedrooms also have full baths. The drive to JMU took 20-30 min and we had no traffic issues getting back and forth. Our only complaints are that the housekeeper could do a better job cleaning; the level of cleanliness was tolerable, but the house definitely could use a deep clean, paying closer attention to the floors and baseboards especially. It didn't smell fresh upon entering and had a pet odor to it; this didn't help my severe allergies all weekend. Also, the living room couch needs to be replaced; we sat down and had a hard time getting back up because there is no support. There are also rips that someone tried to tape back together with duct tape, which is not cool when spending this much to rent. Everything else about the house was great, and if we can verify that it is cleaner in the future, will consider re-renting because of the perfect size and location for our needs.

Duke's Den was great.

  • 4 of 5

The four of us had six great days of golf , food and scenery. Very cozy, tucked away location not far from very good restaurants, scenic golf courses. I would recommend it to anyone.

Cozy little get away

  • 4 of 5

We had a great 3 days at the Duke's Den. Nice to have a fully stocked kitchen. Home was comfortable and easy to get to. All appliances worked well - however, the dishwasher needs to be mounted better; it tends to lean forward when putting dishes in. Beds were comfortable and clean. Thanks for the wonderful hospitality Randy & Laura!!

Awesome

  • 5 of 5

House was great. Close to slopes. 3-levels so that there was plenty of space. Hot tub was perfect. Parking was excellent - did not have steep driveway to mess with.
