If you like walking, cycling, horse riding this is the place to come. Take a bike and cycle around the magnificent Lakes of Killarney and take in the many breathtaking views along the way, or trot along on horseback and really get away from it all.

South and west of the town of Killarney is an expanse of rugged mountainous country. This includes the McGillycuddy's Reeks, the highest mountain range in Ireland, over 1000 metres high. At the foot of the mountains are the world famous Lakes of Killarney. Here lies the 26,000 acres Killarney National Park, which is just minutes from your doorstep. The distinctive combination of mountains, lakes, woods and waterfalls give the area a very special scenic beauty. Experience the wildlife as you walk along, wild red deer roam freely, rabbits and hares scuttle by and I do hope you are lucky enough to experience the magnificent Golden Eagle, (re-introduced during the last few years).

Walk the beautiful grounds of Muckross House, a 19th century mansion featuring all the necessary furnishings and artefacts of the period and is a major visitor attraction. Explore the arboretum, tour Muckross House and view the rooms Queen Victoria stayed in on her visit, when her bed was flown in, and many existing flourishes had been added to this majestic house for her arrival along with her entourage.

Muckross House and grounds are amazing, there simply aren't enough hours in the day to spend here.

Visit Torc Waterfall, Ross Castle or take a jaunting car; tours operate where no motor traffic is permitted.

If you want to go further you would not be in Kerry without visiting Dingle, on the way stop off at Inch Beach, where surfers, locals and those who have heard of the strand's breathtaking views come together.

Brave the Blaskets if you dare. Take the Slea Head drive from Dingle and go the the long way round through Ventry and past Paidi O Shea's pub. Suddenly you come to the sight of the three Blasket Islands in all their glory. Down in Dunquin, you can take a boat from the pier to the Great Blasket, where the echoes of Peig Sayers still ring around the deserted houses and stonewalls.

Don't forget to visit the Interpretation Centre with its views of the Great Blasket Island from the panoramic window. Stroll around and view the local art, artefacts and learn some irish history and culture. Don't forget to stop off at the coffee shop for freshly made scones, butter and jam.

Glanleam Beach, Co Kerry

The Wild Atlantic Way wears a gnarly necklace of beaches, from long sandy sweeps to small storm coves. I would recommend this Valentia Island gem. Glanleam House, the 18th century estate beside the entrance to which it sits, is known for its subtropical gardens, and you'll start to notice the thick, exotic leafiness well before the road swerves down to the great public beach. The water is clear and shallow; you can see across to the Dingle Peninsula, and the only other people there when I visited were a German family, who had rented the 250 year old converted boathouse as a self-catering stay (B&B and a self catering cottage are also available. It may be an idea to go there to see this area on a day tour.

About Mary Barrett

May I introduce myself. My name is Mary and I grew up in Kerry. I married here and brought up my two children near Castleisland. I lost both my parents when I was a child and as I was the oldest daughter the responsibility of my young brothers and sister fell to me. I'm so proud that all my sibling did exceptionally well in life. I enjoy cooking, baking and playing cards twice a week. I'm now living in Castleisland with my husband. My son is married and has two little girls in Chicago. My daughter is married in Cork and also has two little girls. This is the first time I have rented a home and absolutely love sharing my lovely home with you.

We fell in love with the area. The house was so well built and luxurious and the location was everything we ever wanted. We want our guests grow to love our great town and we want to share our beautiful home with all of you.

What makes this house unique

We always loved shopping and visiting Killarney. The views in Killarney we believe are the most beautiful in the whole world.

Wonderful Stay in Killarney!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most wonderful 4 nights in Killarney thanks to Mary's home. I can't think of a better location to explore the Southwest part of Ireland. The town of Killarney is a 3 minute walk and you are a short walk or bike ride into the National Park. Mary is a warm and wonderful lady who went out of her way to make us feel welcome. The house is very modern and with 4 bedrooms and 4 baths, it is very spacious. 5 star stay. Thank you Mary!

Owner's Response: Thank you for your lovely review, it was a pleasure having you and your family stay. We were also happy that the historic Killarney House, in the National Park a few minutes away, had just opened in time for your visit. We would love to welcome you back again some time soon.

Perfect House, Great Location

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in Killarney was terrific. The house was beautiful...clean, beautifully equipped, great location. Mary and Eileen made us welcome, even left a nice goodie basket, which was so good. It is one of the best VRBO houses we have ever rented and will be telling our friends who visit Ireland about it.

A wonderful comfortable home in a terrific location.

  • 5 of 5

The home is comfortable for four couples with quality appliances and a roomy kitchen. The location is walkable for all of Killarney and the park. Mary is a fine and helpful hostess. The cash security deposit is a bit inconvenient.

Clean and comfortable

  • 5 of 5

Our family really enjoyed our stay. The friendly host (owner) was ready for our arrival and took extra time to show us how everything worked in the house. Great location with parking and walking distance to the city center. We will definitely stay here again the next time we visit. Cheers!

Awesome property!

  • 5 of 5

There were 8 of us staying at Parkhaven and we had a great time in Killarney, and much of the reason was because of the house. It was clean, spacious and very well equipped. I also loved that it was only a 5 minute walk to town. We loved the area and we loved the house. Mary could not have been nicer. Her scones are delicious! Thanks Mary!

Car: not necessary

No need to hire a car, but it is recommended as it opens up the surrounding towns and villages. You are five minutes from Killarney town and a short stroll to Killarney National Park. This amazing park contains many features of national and international importance such as the native Oakwood's and Yew woods together with an abundance of evergreen trees and shrub and a profusion of bryophytes and lichens, which thrive in the mild Killarney climate. The UNEC designated this park as a Biosphere Reserve in 1981.

You are right near Muckross House and Park, Torc Waterfall, the Lakes and you are on the Ring of Kerry. Lots of walks in the location, get some useful information in the Tourist Information Centre nearby.
