About Eva Taylor
The house was designed and built (literally) by my step mother Marlene and my late father John, who taught structural engineering at the U of M. The space is a joy and a delight to be in, comfortable and inviting.
Why Eva Taylor chose Harbor Springs
For several summers my family rented a house down the beach. We fell in love with the area as a perfect get away for parents, grandparents, kids and dogs. We were lucky to find this piece of land/sand with no rocks-on beach or in water-just sand. The house was completed about 20 years ago.
What makes this House unique
As we appreciate it when my dog is welcome on my travels, the house welcomes (well behaved) dogs, has a doggy door and a small fenced in area off front porch. The house is maintained in excellent condition-smoke free and shoe free.

Off the grid, on everything else!
This was a great place to unplug! Cons, not much in the way of TV, WiFi, etc. - Pros, not much in the way of TV, WiFi, etc. if you get my drift. Here, you unplug. The upside down configuration was perfect. Panoramic views for miles and miles from the upper deck, a screened in lower deck if the bugs come calling (we never used it as we had ZERO big issues), lower sitting deck along the wall to the beach, even lower hammock deck a little further on and then a beautiful stretch of sandy beach with very few other people around. We just left our chairs and toys down at the beach so the walk back and forth (about 100 yards or so) was no matter. We LOVED this house. No microwave, so just be prepared to use the stove and toaster oven - again, no big deal. As for the area, Cross Village is small and has Legs Inn, which we did not visit as the views could not have matched those where we were staying and we weren’t in the mood for Polish/American food (though everyone recommended the place) and the Old World Cafe which we were I retested in but did not get to. Harbor Springs is about 25 minutes away down C-77 and is absolutely adorable. Little Free Libraries are everywhere (books are loved in these parts ♥️) and Wilderness Park is literally a short walk away. Loads of beautiful shoreline. Eagles, vultures, kingfishers, and more abound. The Windjammer Marina is only 40 minutes away where you can rent a boat and take it all the way to Lake Huron at Cheboygan or just frolic in Crooked Lake, or Burt Lake, or Mullet Lake, etc. We can’t recommend it enough. Just read about the property and understand what it does and does not have and be prepared. It’s a family-time place or just a quiet refuge with beauty to spare. Perfect place to unplug and unwind.
Bliss on the Beach
Our week-long stay up north was truly wonderful. Check-in was a breeze and we thoroughly enjoyed the proximity to Lake Michigan. The house had everything we needed, and even a few things we were surprised to see! The fenced in side yard was especially enjoyed by our dogs. Nothing like a late night wake up for a potty break. Having a secure area for them was wonderful. The house is open, spacious, and well maintained. All of the rooms had beautiful views and the kitchen was fully equiped with all of the tools and cookware you could need. Truly, my only complaint is that I wished the water was just a few degrees warmer haha! It didn't stop us from swimming though. We brought our SUP so between that and the provided kayaks, we were all able to have fun on the water. I was worried that it was going to be hot and the house without AC, but there were box fans everywhere. We didn't even need them because the breeze from the lake kept us cool and comfortable even in the midday heat. This is a great location if you're looking to get away from the city and into nature. We didn't even miss TV or wifi! Our cell phones had service so we were able to stay up to date with emails if needed. I already miss the sound of the waves at night and the cool breeze off the water. Thank you for sharing your amazing lake cottage with us!
What a lovely review Megan thank you. It touches me that you enjoyed our special place so much. We were very happy to have you as guests and would love to have you back again. I hope to hear from you for next season!
Million dollar views!
The property location was great for our vacation (we were looking to get away and enjoy some peace and quiet), nearby Cross Village is cool experience. The house was very clean and the kitchen was very well equipped and the beds were very comfortable. But the view from the top floor was spectacular! Absolutely breathtaking. Would absolutely stay here again :).
Thank you for your review of our lake house. I’m so happy you enjoyed it and found everything comfortable. It is a slice of heaven for sure. We would be happy to have you back, hope to hear from you!
We Left Early
The location is nice. The floors, bathrooms and bedrooms were very clean. The bedding was also nice. The dog area was great. The views were great. Kitchen had lots of supplies.
The first problem was that one of the beds was in the unfinished basement, next to an open sink and toilet. Similar to what you might expect in a jail cell. The owner also expects two adults to sleep in a full bed. That didn't go well. There is plenty of room for larger beds, so why?
The dishwasher ran but didn't actually clean the dishes. If they went in with a spot of coffee they came out with said spot. That explained why most of the dishes were dirty. Also, flies everywhere right up until we left. I did contact the owner to let her know about the dishwasher and flies. She said she would notify the cleaning lady. How that would fix the dishwasher I am not sure? The deck was decked out with spiders and webs as were the windows. The deck is ready to be replaced. There were only two chairs on the deck and one was broken along with an old picnic table. We stayed in the living room and looked out the dirty windows at sunset. The windows are awning windows so they don't open more than 12 inches at the bottom. That really cuts the lake breezes. The outdoor screened in porch is empty and has the same issues with being old and needing updates. The kayaks are stored away from the water under a deck. We figured we would have to clean them first so we didn't use those either. They were also really small for the big lake.
There is no microwave. There is no wifi, cable or satellite. She could hook this up easily since her neighbors all have it. The TV is a 480p tiny monitor, maybe 20 inch, that distorts DVD's. The CD player is broken, and all of the CD's are classical music, so there was that. This was supposed to be part of the charm of the place. Not so much. The lake is high and you can try to walk the beach, but there is not much beach there. The full beds were a bummer. I slept in one bed, too hard, and my husband pulled a mattress off of another bed and slept on the floor next to me. Not charming or cozy.
This house is set up more for the owners use than renters. She doesn't watch TV, she likes classical music, she sleeps alone when she is there, and she might be okay with flies and spiders. We would go back to the area but not to this house. Too bad. At over $300 a night this should be better. We left a day early.
Thanks for the positives stated in the review and I appreciate the opportunity to respond to several statements that are erroneous and often misleading.
Information provided to renters clearly states there are three bedrooms for guest use, each able to accommodate two persons with six the maximum number of guests allowed, and that the basement IS NOT a bedroom for guests (is occasionally used by owners overflow grandchildren)! Renters use the basement only to enter the garage where trash is deposited. The reason behind this statement about the basement is incomprehensible and leads one to question the veracity and motivations of the reviewer.
Information provided to potential renters states there is no microwave, cable tv, or wi fi. No McDonalds near by either. It’s a get away from it all kind of place. Folks are forewarned and, clearly, if persons require these amenities, they should not rent this house and go elsewhere-another indication of questionable criticism.
The dishwasher was checked out. It works-no other complaints or dirty dishes reported. Window areas are cleaned every week. The deck is in good repair and safe, as confirmed by my licensed contractor and handiman. The broken chair has been “re-roped”. There are also deck chairs inside the double deck doors for use on the deck, which, btw, when open have always provided more than enough breeze off the lake. Awning windows were purposely installed as the best bet against-at times-challenging weather coming from the lake. The Lake kayaks, generally greatly enjoyed by renters, are, as requested, stored under a deck by guests when they leave as they easily take off on their own when left close to shore and invited by tide and wind.
We have never before had a complaint about flies-inside or outside. The cleaning people checked and found two flies inside the house. They, apparently, given the opportunity of an open door, like to come in from the cold in autumn.
In summary, while things do break, and lake levels are always changing, I have serious concerns about the veracity and misleading comments in this review. I believe we are responsive, conscientious and thoughtful owners who succeed in providing an especially fine get away for folks.
Top rated vacation
Views were amazing. Sunsets were absolutely stunning. My family and I had a fantastic time. It was nice to get away without all the distractions of everyday life. Location was quiet and peaceful yet Mackinaw City and Island were close for some great day trips . One of my favorite conveniences was the doggie door! Had a wonderful time!
Beverly we are so happy you enjoyed your stay at our beach house. It is very important to us that our guests are happy and enjoy their time there. It’s wonderful to hear your positive words.
Peaceful & Perfect
We spent the first week of October at this beach house and everything about the trip was perfect. Since it was off-season we had the beach to ourselves (with our pups..... thank you, Marlene!). Although, my guess is even in-season it would still be quiet and peaceful. Every night we watched the most amazing sunsets. The upper floor with the great room and kitchen is so open and bright. Tons of windows to open and light just floods in. The beach was awesome with a great fire pit. First time for our pups having roasted hot dogs and we all had the time of our lives. Morning coffee overlooking the lake was another awesome experience. Again, my dogs just fell in love laying on the deck and watching the water. We all took a drive down a very country road (one lane, gravel) around a nearby lake and that was just beautiful. We only ran in to see Leggs Inn but that place was awesome! Next time (we're getting ready to book again) we will definitely go there for at least one meal. Such a unique place and their gardens with tables for dining are just gorgeous, and overlooks Lake Michigan. Not too far away is Harbor Springs and that town is so cute, it feels like you go back in time. Big old Victorians with wrap-around porches and the cutest little downtown. We highly recommend stopping at Tom's Mom's Cookies there and make sure you get enough cookies to take home with you. They are the best! The owner, Marlene, is very nice and easy to work with. Thank you, Marlene, for sharing your beautiful home with us!
Contemporary Lake Michigan Beachfront Home. Decks for viewing breathtaking sunsets, watch eagles fly above, hummingbirds hover near by, loons flying overhead,, Waugochance to Beaver Chain of Islands, three twinkling lighthouses, freighters in the distance. Walk the sandy beach for miles, bird watch, hike dunes and forest just across the (dead end) road or in Wilderness State Park-a five minute beach walk north. Walk out your door for a sunrise jog or yoga on the beach. Cycle back roads and nationally historic 'Tunnel of Trees' scenic road to Harbor Springs. Sleep-in your bed or hammock (on beach-side screened porch)-to soothing sound of waves lapping on the shore. Take a ferry to car free, Mackinaw Island or bridge to the Upper Peninsula, play golf, fish on a close-by inland lake, dine out-all15 minutes away. Sail, kayak, swim in summer, enjoy Spring trillium in bloom, Fall foliage in fall. Take an art/craft class at nearby Studio/Art Gallery
Other Activities: Take a break from building sand castles and take a kayak out (two available) or cross the road and hike in to more dunes, forests, paths. Bike in to the village and enjoy authentic Polish food and/or live music at the Legs Inn. Drive over to Douglas Lake (Pellston) for a fine dinner on the Lake.
Take a ferry from Mackinaw City over to Mackinaw Island, get some fudge, rent a bike and head to the other end of the island and escape the summer island crowds or take a horse and buggy ride (no cars allowed on Island). And, most wonderful of all, sip wine on the deck and watch the beautiful sunsets over the lake.
