Immersed in 5 hectares of rolling green gardens, the Villa has 4 bedrooms and 4 bathrooms and features antique furniture and paintings, marble and parquet flooring, high ceilings and a gorgeous park.
The large Villa is spread over two floors and with over 500 square metres, makes up the lion's share of the building; 2 other small flats used by family members, and the caretaker's flat, all with separate entrances, are located in the same building. Please note that the photographs in this listing are of the rental property only!
A separate outbuilding, used only by our guests, has a ping-pong table and fireplace. The property is located on a hill overlooking the surrounding countryside. The locality is called “Poggio Verde” which means Green Hill. The current renovations have brought the parquet and marble floors to their original 18th c. lustre, and at the same time have added important creature comforts such as a new gourmet kitchen, air-conditioning, marble bathrooms and high-speed internet.
This lovely Italian country villa is ideally located for visitors wishing to explore northern Italy, from fashionable Milan just 50 minutes to the south to the parks and lakes in the foothills of the Alps just minutes to the north.

I grew up in Kansas and met Luigi when the bank I worked for transferred me to Milan. The home has been in Luigi's family for generations. We used it a lot when our children were young but now that they are living abroad we are pleased that others might share and enjoy this beautiful place.
I love to cook and both Luigi and I enjoy sharing meals with friends, so when we decided to refurbish the kitchen, we joined 3 smaller spaces into one large gourmet kitchen and informal dining space, with plenty of space for sous-chefs and conversation groups, and all the utensils needed to facilitate a great meal.
Over the years the house has been used for innumerable family gatherings, musical evenings, holiday parties, charity tea parties and family weddings. We love having the opportunity to share the beauty of Poggio Verde with our three children, all of our extended families and with friends.
Gretchen Romig Crosti purchased this villa in 1897
With a deed dated November 1897, our great uncle Carlo Bondonio became the owner of Poggio Verde 'Green Hill', an 8-hectare property consisting of a farmhouse, a house with a barn, and a country house. The date of construction of the country house is uncertain but parts of the old farmhouse likely date from the 1500s.
Photos from the early 1900s show that Poggio Verde was similar to its current appearance, but surrounded by oak forests and with a few cultivated fields.
At the beginning of 1900, uncle Carlo built two farmsteads for dairy cows and pigs. Milk and butter were produced under the Bondonio brand as well as silk cocoons and wine.
Uncle Carlo also installed two cannons. They fired when there was risk of hail and neighboring counties replied with the sound of bells. Any narrow escape was celebrated with copious libations.
When uncle Carlo died in 1936 his daughter Fanny inherited Poggio Verde. She used to spend summers here where her husband, Gabriele Santini, director of the Opera of Rome, prepared his concerts playing the 1905 Schiedmeier piano still in our living room. Many artists visited Poggio Verde, including Arturo Toscanini.
But with the outbreak of the war, Fanny took the decision to sell. Poggio Verde was then purchased in 1941 by her cousin and our grandfather Luigi, who had spent wonderful periods of his childhood in Poggio Verde.
When the World War II bombing began, the family moved to Poggio Verde. Here domestic life was quiet; farmers cultivated the land, kept cows, chickens, turkeys, geese, silkworms and made wine in the Tinera.
With the end of the war began the great transformation of Poggio Verde. A garden, a stone porch and an Italian garden were built. In the porch, grandfather Luigi, a passionate Latin scholar, had two stone plaques placed with quotes from Horace’s Satires. Like Horace, grandfather Luigi saw in Poggio Verde the fulfillment of his dreams and the hope of a peaceful old age among his affectionate family, friends and books.
Less than an hour from Milan yet immersed on a quiet green hill, this 18th c. villa gives visitors the pleasure of enjoying all the riches of the northern Italian countryside and cuisine, including a Michelin starred restaurant and several micro farm producers in the neighbourhood, with a kitchen that just invites experimentation and a stunning outdoor dining space, while at the same time giving easy access to the myriad of cultural riches of Milan and the cities of Bergamo, Lecco and Como, just to name a few. Biking along the Adda river in a charming state park is just 30 minutes away, the same distance as one of Italy's top golf courses where the Italian Open will be held in 2015. Mountain climbers need drive only 40 minutes to reach the Italian Alps, and a luxury Spa treatment is merely 10 minutes away. Monza's royal treasure, including the iron crown with which Napoleone famously crowned himself, is right in our neighbourhood. And of course, you can simply stay home and enjoy our lovely park, challenge fellow travellers to croquet or badminton or enjoy a book in the cozy Roccolo surrounded by trees. Indoors there is an excellent grand piano that was played by Toscanini, a Bose large-screen home cinema and several quiet spots to take a book. The house features air conditioning, high-speed internet throughout and an elevator.
This is only for those who love to eat, drink great wine, and be totally spoiled for a week! Find myself almost embarrassed to tell others about our vacation because it sounds so decadent...needless-to-say, we loved every minute! gretchen andeel
We are two couples who decided to try an alternative to staying in a hotel for a week.
This beautiful villa is set in wonderful grounds which we enjoyed very much.
The owners of the property are delightful to deal with and very willing to assist in any way. Gretchen had recommendations for local restaurants which were fantastic.
Perhaps if there are any negatives it is that this villa is amongst a number of others belonging to the same family. The owners have an apartment within the house itself and the pool is shared by all. We were not aware of this and as a result our friends declined to use the pool area.
Il Poggio Verde is an incredibly spacious villa situated in close proximity to Milan, Lake Como and many other wonderful destinations. Our family stayed for a week in August with another family of four. We had 4 kids between us, ages 10-13. The swimming pool was gorgeous and immaculate. The kids enjoyed the ping pong and the foozball in the game room. There is a giant screen with a projector in the parlor so we had nightly movies in this home theater by connecting our laptop to the projector. The kitchen was fully stocked and we enjoyed both cooking at home, fine dining locally and even one night hired a chef to cook for us. The grounds and gardens were beautiful and well maintained. We had planned to do day trips daily but couldn't resist the charms of the villa and spent two full days lounging by the pool. Angeline was extremely helpful with suggestions, dinner reservations, and answering questions as they came up. We have been traveling in different European countries with our friends for five years in a row now and this was far and away our best experience. You won't regret it. Ciao Il Poggio Verde- we already miss you!!
My family recently stayed at this beautiful villa and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay! The views were amazing, the pool so clean and fresh, and the host was lovely. We had two infants with us and aimed for a relaxed 'home-away-from-home' experience for this trip. We spent most of our time enjoying long meals under the pergola and star-gazing on the veranda in the evenings. The grocery store was a short 5 minute drive from the villa, where there is also a small playground for the little ones to play while the adults can have their local coffee morning experience at the highly recommended cafe/bakery! All of our needs were taken care of and the host was very accommodating and prompt in her responses. I'd note the house is baby-friendly but not necessarily baby-safe as there are lots of glass items and steep steps onto cement, so you have to keep a close watch on any little ones. Overall it was a great trip and we'd definitely recommend it!
Words cannot describe what a beautiful, unique, historic, charming place this is. We were two families with children ranging in age from 4 to 14, and each and everyone of us had a lovely time both a the villa and also in the activities around. Gretchen was very helpful providing us with some excellent recommendations in the vicinity.
I don’t know if you received my previous mail, but in case you expected me to send the review to you anyway, based on my preamble to you in my mail of the 5th August here goes.
We were four golfing couples from South Africa looking for a luxury villa in Italy not too far from Lake Como and within easy reach of Milan Airports and with a number of premiere golf courses in the close proximity.
We live on a golf estate in CapeTown and wanted the same feeling of space and a certain level of luxury that we have become used to at Steenberg in the Cape. We very fortunately stumbled across the Poggio Verde website and immediately liked the look of the villa, the large beautiful grounds and a magnificent terrace overlooking a splendid Olympic size pool. It had four large airconditioned bedrooms en suite that were an absolute prerequisite during an abnormally hot Italian Summer.
Once we made contact with the owner Gretchen directly on E Mail, we knew we had made the right choice. Gretchen was so helpful in planning our eight day stay and being a golfer herself she not only put us in touch with four great golf courses she even booked them for us. Also being English speaking was such a bonus in terms of our communication and finalizing bookings for Michelin Star restaurants and other activities.
Our main concern, being a golf trip, was that the quality and the proximity of the courses were right. With Gretchen’s help we played Milano, Villa D’ Este, Bergamo and Monticello. They were all good but Milano and Villa D’ Este were magnificent and the lunches after golf most memorable.
The villa Poggio Verde is situated about an hour from Milan and about 45minutes from Como, all the courses were between 20 and 40 minutes away by car. Off peak driving to and from the villa was a pleasure but do allow extra time when travelling early morning or late afternoon. In addition to the courses we played there are at least 5 or 6 other top courses nearby that would be great to play.
In summing up, it is never easy to please eight people of a certain age in terms of tourist venues and the right accommodation but for us Poggio Verde ticked all the boxes and I ended up being a very popular ‘Tour Leader’.
Gretchen, one last thank you for making everything just perfect.
Best of luck and regards.
This lovely Italian country villa is ideally located for visitors wishing to explore northern Italy, from fashionable Milan just 50 minutes to the south to the parks and lakes in the foothills of the Alps just minutes to the north. The home and surrounding park is located in Barzanò, 20 minutes (12 km) south of Lago di Pusiano, a great favorite of fishing fans and naturalists. This pretty, largely undiscovered lake is protected as it is located inside the Parco Naturale della Valle del Lambro, visible in the distance from one of the terraces of the house.
The drive to Milan is 50 minutes and to the Lago di Como in Lecco 30. We are located right on the edge of another beautiful but little known Regional Park, Parco Regionale di Montevecchia e della Valle del Curone and the adorable hill town of Montevecchia favorites of photographers, mountain bikers, hikers and mushroom-gatherers.
For gourmet food lovers, there is a large gourmet kitchen and the home is within walking distance of the one-star Michelin restaurant Pierino in Viganò.
