I respond very promptly to legitimate inquiries and look forward to hearing from you. Legitimate inquiries include some information about you, as well as your interest in this specific property, the general region of the country, and its amazing outdoor opportunities. Please do not submit a false inquiry; I will mark it as spam. False inquiries provide little or no indication that the writer has read the listing ("House looks great! Hope it's available!"). Sorry to start out with this whiney paragraph but there have been too many phishing / spam requests.
Fly fishing, photography, hiking, outdoor recreational dream - private custom home built in 2009 on a shared 2000 acre ranch with 3 miles of frontage on the upper Madison river. Wildlife and spectacular scenery just outside the door. In addition to great fishing access right on the ranch, the home is close to Cliff, Wade, and Hebgen lakes, and many public fishing access spots along the Madison (Three Dollar Bridge, Palisades, etc.). Stroll the quaint streets of Ennis or spend a day in the gold mining town of Virginia City. Just 45 minutes to West Yellowstone and the west entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Great hiking directly on the ranch, or on many of the trails into nearby public lands (Papoose Creek, Indian Creek, Bear Creek trails just to name a few). Home is sited at the edge of an alpine meadow surrounded by forest. View across meadow to the Madison range, beautiful all day and amazing at sunset. We have seen moose, bear, elk, fox, deer, and other creatures just outside the home. Our home is a great option for a family or 2 couples seeking the comforts of modern living (granite kitchen, wine chiller, hand-scraped teak floors) amid the wilderness of Montana. The custom home presents an inviting and relaxing mix of rustic and modern elements. It's not super fussy but it is new and nice. Not the kind of place where you hang a kerosene lantern on a wooden peg and clomp around in hiking boots.
Master bedroom (upstairs) has a Stearns & Foster king bed, desk, fireplace (two-sided to great room, with optional screen for privacy), private deck, views on two walls. Master bathroom suite has two sinks, toilet, and walk-in shower. There is also a TV with DirecTV service in the master bedroom.
Great room (upstairs) includes living area, fireplace, custom dining table (seats 6-8), breakfast bar, kitchen, and access to the main deck across front of house. A pair of Lazy-Boy recliners positioned near the main windows will invite you to spend the day reading or just staring at the view. Three skylights and abundant windows provide a great deal of natural light. There is a half-bathroom. The kitchen includes stove, oven, refrigerator / freezer, dishwasher, wine refrigerator, coffee maker, rice cooker, and blender. Granite countertops.
There are hand-scraped teak hardwood floors throughout the upstairs and on the stairway. Both the master bedroom and great room have high ceilings (approaching 20 feet), custom wood trusses built on site, and low-voltage lighting.
We have four comfortable swivel chairs for the main deck.
Guest bedroom 1 (downstairs) has a comfortable queen bed and views across the meadow.
Guest bedroom 2 or bunk room (downstairs) is primarily intended for kids. It has a full bed, twin bunk beds, and a twin trundle bed under the full. So it could sleep up to five, but with the trundle pulled out, there's not much free floor space. There is a large window facing interesting stone and landscaping, but not a dramatic view.
Downstairs there is a full bath with one sink, toilet, and tub/shower.
There is a TV / game room downstairs with large wall-mounted flat screen TV, DirecTV service, and DVD / blu-ray player. There are also two large dog crates (we have Rhodesian Ridgebacks).
The downstairs floor is a stained & sealed concrete slab that looks much like green marble, with carpets in the bedrooms and main area of TV / game room.
Upstairs and downstairs have independent thermostats. There is central heating and air conditioning, but the downstairs stays cool enough we virtually never turn on A/C there even in high summer.
There is a land phone line, high-speed internet (DSL), and Wi-Fi. Verizon cell phones tend to work near the river, but reception at the home itself is not reliable. AT&T seems not to serve the immediate area, but it can be picked up in the nearby towns of Ennis or West Yellowstone.
There is parking for one car in the enclosed and attached garage. One or two other vehicles can park in pull-outs off the driveway. The ranch roads and driveway are well maintained gravel.

I'm a high school physics teacher. My partner and I have two adopted children. We love to fly fish, hike, and simply relax at our Montana home.
Mark Hurwitz purchased this house in 2008
We built a home on this ranch because it is sited on one of the most beautiful stretches of the Madison river. The home sits up on a forested bench, but down by the river the banks are gentle.
It's a 5-10 minute drive on private ranch roads to many great fishing spots. We can stroll out the front door and hike on miles of private roads and trails. Despite the remote setting, there are a good restaurant and pub (open in the summer) about 12 minutes away.
The owner was great to deal with and his property descriptions are nicely detailed and accurate. Also, I agreed with all of the positive comments by other reviewers. Other notes I would add are:
- Madison River boat launch parks are in close proximity
- The nearby Montana towns of Ennis, Virginia City and Nevada City (Ghost Town) are most interesting
- We experienced good fishing each day on the water
- This property is a fine base camp for day trips to Yellowstone
Look no further for a private getaway in a natural mountain setting.
We spent a month, Aug/Sept, in the house and had a fantastic time! Mark was excellent to interact with from initial inquires to refund of deposit. He is a really nice guy. The setting of the house is perfect, it is furnished with everything you need to have a relaxed time, and it is very clean. Besides fishing on the Madison, there are many other smaller streams to fish as well - West Fork of the Madison, Indian Creek, Ruby River, Willow Creek, etc. If you are there over a major holiday, go to the Patagonia Outlet sale in Dillion and then to the Taco Bus for lunch. Thanks for sharing your beautiful house Mark!
I had the good fortune to spend an entire month at this property, and if the universe smiles on me, I'll be back. The pictures don’t really do it justice. The house itself is designed for a maximum outdoors feel with exceptional comfort, and doesn’t disappoint. The kitchen is well appointed and the entertainment system/TV was perfect. From my first day to the thirtieth, the view out any window was likely to make me stop and breathe in the vista. I was visited by elk, moose, and deer, it’s an outdoor enthusiasts’ dream. If that weren’t enough, there’s 3 miles of the Madison River to fish. I could leave the house, and in minutes be casting for, and catching, big trout from this blue-ribbon stretch of water. There’s nothing negative to say about Mark, the staff at the ranch, or this slice of Montana. It’s worth every penny.
Just returned from a wonderful trip to this beautiful home with a group of adults and small kids. The home is lovely and well appointed, with a great kitchen for cooking and beautiful views from every room. There is a master, a guest room and a perfect kid's room for sleeping, as well as a big den and living room, so nobody was cramped.
We really enjoyed amazing sightings of moose and deer right out of the window. And, we were able to do some little kid fishing, visited a mining town, saw Yellowstone and swam in an incredible hot springs. And, we even found a movie theater nearby built in 1937 with prices to match. While everybody raves about the fly fishing, we were there to just relax and do some super kid friendlhy stuff. This was a great location to explore Western Montana and we hope to return. The kids just couldn't get enough of the wildlife and we loved the beautiful home and setting. Thanks for a great vacation.
We just returned back to NYC from our trip to Montana, and we are already dreaming of going back. Each day we woke up to the sound of birds chirping and once in a while the sound of a few sheep (they had some sheep on the ranch while we were there). The pictures on here do not do this house justice. It is beautiful and was the perfect size for us. There are gorgeous beamed ceilings, a double sided fireplace, a granite countertop in the kitchen. I loved the way the double sinks were laid out in the master bedroom. The views of the ranch are gorgeous and the deck is perfect to relax and have a glass of wine after a long day of fishing or touring in West Yellowstone.
We had some of the best fishing we have ever had on the Madison River this trip and our float trip went through the ranch, so at the end of the day if you wanted to get a little bit of extra fishing in you could just stay on property. We also took a day off and went into West Yellowstone to see some wildlife and the falls, which I definitely recommend doing.
Mark was so helpful and extremely responsive from the time of booking throughout our stay. He also provided information to cover all of our questions that we may have had during our stay. We definitely recommend this property and can’t wait to go back to Montana!
To say that we enjoyed are stay in this home on Sun West Ranch would be an understatement. The home is immaculate yet perfectly comfortable for my family of three and our labrador. We had visitors during our stay and felt it was a perfect home base for two small families.
While one of the more modest homes on the ranch, it is beautifully appointed with very nice separation of space: A very comfortable living room and kitchen, with great views of the range across the valley; a cozy family room for playing games, watching tv or just hanging out; and a spacious master which was perfect to end the day in. The owners have a great sense of style - rustic feel, contemporary touches. We don't think the photos do it justice - if you like the photos, you'll love the home.
We fell in love with The Madison and the ranch during our stay. There is plenty of fishing right on the ranch, which is perfect for the dad that can't pull himself away from the river but wants to spend time with the family - a quick drive down the hill for an early morning or after dinner fishing expedition. Other very well known locations (Three Dollar, Raynold's, Varney, etc) are just a short drive away.
We saw lots of wildlife on the ranch (moose, bald eagles, beaver and more) and enjoyed our frequent trips into Yellowstone to sightsee and fish the fabled waters (The Firehole, Gibbon, Madison).
Mark, our primary contact, was super responsive and fun to get to know.
We couldn't have been happier with our stay - serenity, adventure into the park or world class fly fishing, have it your way.
