About Owner/Manager

We want you to know about the area so you can plan your trip. So, here is additional information. :)

LAKE GOGEBIC COUNTY PARK PICNIC AREA: View of the lake. Pavillion. Boardwalk type areas by the water. Just West of the cabin to the south side of Lake Gogebic. Boat landing area also.

MANY LAKES & 2 COUNTIES: Some people like to fish the chain, then fish some National Forest lakes & then Lake Gogebic. If one area is not biting then try the next. You won't be stuck at one lake or paying lake cabin prices. Snowmobile, canoe, fish, ORV, etc. two counties in one vacation. Ontonagon County is just a bit north of cabin.

SERENE CISCO CHAIN OF LAKES: The Cisco Chain has walleye, largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, northern pike, lake trout, musky, panfish, etc. 15 lakes & approx. 271 miles of wooded scenic shoreline. The lakes have various islands & variety of waters including spring-fed.

BIKING & HIKING TRAILS: Bike trails by Watersmeet & also the Henry & Pomeroy Lake Complex Trail, southwest of cabin. Various hiking trails by Lake Gogebic, etc.

TRAILS, BRIDGE SYSTEM, TUNNEL: The main snowmobile trail becomes our great ATV/UTV/ORV trail when it's not sledding season. Go over the bridge system & see one of the waterfalls. Go through tunnel system just a tad West of cabin. Beautiful photos.

SYLVANIA WILDERNESS: There is the Ottawa National Forest but also the Sylvania Wilderness Area is a national forest with 21,000 acres of virgin forests. Natural lakes, beach area, hiking, picnic areas

Every year Michigan has free weekends for:

a) ATVing UTVing ORVing

b) fishing

The weekends are generally in February and June for fishing. And, then the weekends for ORVing are generally June and August.

This area has a variety of trails and lakes to enjoy those weekends and other dates.

Why Owner/Manager chose Watersmeet

(Look at the 'About You' Area for more on cabin & area)

OTTAWA NATIONAL FOREST BEHIND CABIN: look at markers, platbooks (in cabin also) & maps for landlines. Forest has been included in select cut and cutting. This will be great for wildlife. Hunters, nature lovers will all appreciate the changes of the woods. National Forest markers & marks on trees to look for. Cabin is also on acreage.

Coyote hunting currently in 2017 listed as all year. Turkey, grouse, etc.

GEM AREA: Just southwest of cabin is one of Upper Michigan's few GEM Areas. Areas managed for grouse habitats with walking trails. Blue Bill Creek. The area is toward Pomeroy Lake & Tenderfoot Creek (check GEM Maps).

WILDLIFE, FORESTRY THEME: Unique, theme, fun cabin with log-branch-stickley décor, some branch trim around doors-walls-furniture & items regarding wildlife in area & how they help habitat for other animals, birds, etc., fun facts for families and friends, fun DVDs-movies-books-coloring pages-displays-unique décor-games-recipe(s)-creative wall art-stories of wildlife. Go for nature exploring, picture taking, tree type locating, & more.

OUTSIDE OF CABIN: Tent site & sand, camper area (no dumping) & circle driveway. Picnic tables, chairs, charcoal grill, firepit, patio area with seating, mosquito zapper (area is sprayed for bugs but zapper helps also), outside white lights

Scenic mountains to the northwest. Gorgeous waterfalls. Spring could be a great time to see waterfalls with the Spring thaw.

From Watersmeet, the Ontonagon River flows north into Lake Superior. The Wisconsin River flows south into the Mississippi River, and the Paint River flows east into Lake Michigan. This is “where the waters meet”!

What makes this cabin unique

Stickley Lodge Getaway. The Historic Stickley Area.

Stickley (GNIS FID: 1621776) is a place located within the Township of Watersmeet, a minor civil division (MCD) of Gogebic County, Michigan. The elevation of Stickley is 1,634 feet. Many areas in some states are not this high. Stickley appears on the Thayer U.S. Geological Survey Map. Gogebic County is in the Central Time Zone (UTC -6 hours) and just north of cabin the time zone changes (hour ahead).

Just northeast approximately of the cabin was the area of "Stickley Lodge" the wilderness retreat for Albert Stickley of Grand Rapids, Michigan {Stickley Brothers Company/Quaint Furniture} brother of Gustav Stickley. Described as palatial, it had eight bedrooms & a huge $30,000.00 pipe organ. Albert used the location to oversee his lumber holdings. After his death lodge was turned into a resort "to a few who desire refinement & the companionship of cultured guests." At one time property had its own railroad spur. With a big "S" on the hillside marking his private train stop, Mr. Stickley could be dropped off at the covered shelter with steps leading up the hill to the lodge. You can still make out the grading for the tracks thru the swamp that passes Stickley Lake.

You can enjoy the area of some of the great men & women that have passed through this area many years ago. Visit the area museum (one in Land O'Lakes), walk through the National Forest, & enjoy the adventures.

Could walk out the cabin and go into the Ottawa National Forest to take photos, enjoy a nature walk, etc.

There are trails that some also walk on and see the river down from the cabin. One trail is used for the ORV and snowmobile trail. From this trail there are beautiful views of the river with sounds over the rocks, etc. The river changes as it goes through different terrains and leads to the Kakabika Waterfalls (see maps).

Love Watersmeet!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect starting point for a Northwoods vacation! Clean cabin, pet friendly, many amenities, comfy beds = wonderful vacation. During our 3 night stay we explored the area and saw several waterfalls, porcupine mountain state park, paulding lights and traveled many miles of the ORV trails minutes from the cabin. We also visited Land O Lakes (WI) and Cisco Lake. Although the cabin had a full kitchen with great seating, each night we walked right across the street to Rogers Bar. Rogers had great food and amazing service. There is a good size grocery store nearby the cabin with reasonable prices as well (Nordines). We are already talking about wanting to go back this winter for another visit. We would definitely recommend and rent this cabin again!
