About Dayna McErlean

Originally from Staten Island, NY - I'm a mom, restaurant owner and real-estate developer with a background in the arts. I've lived in this neighborhood since moving to Portland in 1996 when I opened a mixed-use art and performance space just around the corner from were I live and work now. I own the building that houses Yakuza and Beast restaurants and live upstairs from Yakuza with my young son. I also own DOC restaurant, located just up the street across Killingsworth. I am huge soak and steam fan and designed the Japanese garden behind Yakuza to include a hot tub, cold plunge tub and outdoor shower - a hidden gem that you'll enjoy as a guest at the Kuza Garden Cottage. I look forward to welcoming you and introducing you to this vibrant neighborhood.

Why Dayna McErlean chose Portland

I have lived and worked in this neighborhood since first moving to Portland in 1996. I designed and built out this building and have loved watching new restaurants join us on NE 30th & Killingsworth. It has been extremely gratifying to see the neighborhood come into its own.

What makes this cabin unique

The Kuza Garden Cottage offers guests a peaceful and serene retreat that's also mere steps from some of the most buzzed about and acclaimed fine-dining establishments in the Portland restaurant scene. We offer Bed & Dinner Packages that include 3 course meals with wine/drink pairings from either Yakuza or DOC. After dinner, take in the festival-like party that's Last Thursday on Alberta, then leave the crowds behind and head home to a late night soak in the hot and cold plunge tubs in your Japanese garden setting. Enjoy a nightcap at Yakuza before turning in for the night in this quiet, urban retreat. Skip the hotels and experience the real Portland in a one-of-a-kind way. We look forwarding to seeing you soon.

Cute and very convenient

  • 4 of 5

Cute, well-appointed little "cabin" in Alberta district. We enjoyed the area and the ability to walk to many places and also have ample street parking nearby. It was our first visit to Portland and we really enjoyed it. Friendly people, great food and fun things to explore! If you are not used to city noises (such as trash collectors at 4:30 AM) or are a light sleeper, then you might consider a sound machine or something similar to help block out some of the noise from nearby. Perfect spot for two people or a small family. We will be back to Oregon soon!

Cute, cozy spot

  • 5 of 5

This place was the best! Perfect for my quick trip to Portland. The neighborhood was great and had everything I needed within walking distance. The hot tub and dip pool were so nice, not private, but I don't mind that. The space was very comfortable. I am sure I will be back.

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect place to stay for our family of 4. Our hostess made sure we had everything we needed and brought extra bedding for the kids. We were able to enjoy the soaking tub, which was incredible in the cool night air. The restaurant was delicious. I would definitely recommend staying here. I know we will back!

Thank you

Quiet Place to Settle on a Monday and Tuesday

  • 5 of 5

I stayed from Sunday to Wednesday and I think that is key -- the restaurant is quiet on Sunday evening and was closed Monday and Tuesday, so I had the place to myself. If it had been Friday or Saturday I don't think I would have liked it -- you really are right on the patio of the restaurant. It is a nice little cottage -- my brother (who wasn't staying there) and I treated it as a home away from home as the kitchen and living area gave us everything we needed to cook some meals and hang out. It is best for one person or two people who don't need privacy from one another. There are no internal doors, and it is an open plan. As one person, I loved it. One thing -- the address on the gate is very hard to see and the back path is dark. Get your phone flashlight out!

Stressful Stay at Kudzu Cottage

  • 1 of 5

We stayed in this cottage for 2 nights with our 20 month old toddler. We arrived at the cottage at 4pm and the unit had not been cleaned. The bed was unmade, there was trash in the bins, dirty dishes in the sink, towels on the floor, and old food on the counter.

I immediately texted the owner and she called back a little while later and explained the the housekeeper was stuck in traffic and would arrive soon. After a while, one of the restaurant employees came to the cottage and said the housekeeper would not make it, but she could tidy up the unit on her behalf. This didn't make any sense to us, but by this point we were exhausted and our toddler was barely keeping it together from skipping her nap. The employee surface cleaned the cottage (there was no mopping or scrubbing), and said the owner offered to pay for a "couple of appetizers and drinks" at the restaurant (Yakuza).

We got settled in and hoped to make the best of the situation. However, we soon noticed some odd features of the unit.

1. This cottage has a completely open layout in the sense that there is no privacy. A thin, mesh like fabric separates the living/kitchen area to the bedroom. Same for the divider between the bedroom and the bathroom. 2. The dumpsters for the restaurant trash is located outside the living room barn doors. The smells waft in. Also the path to the dumpsters from the restaurant passes directly in front of the entrance. Liquids drip from the bins along the path.

3. The walls do not appear to be well insulated, as sounds from the restaurants (pots banging, very loud music, people talking), could be heard as late until 12am. Also, there is a bonfire pit in front the the cottage that they light at night. We could smell smoke from the bonfire and people smoking cigarettes.

4. One of the main reasons we chose this unit, aside from the location, was the photos and descriptions of the hot tub and coldwater plunge tub. We did not use either. The hot tub was in direct view from the restaurant patio offering barely any privacy. The water looked murky and uninviting. The plunge tub was covered in kudzu and dirt.

We absolutely would not consider staying here again. This unit needs better management, a clearer description of features, and most of all-some TLC. Lastly, I JUST received my deposit and cleaning reimbursement. It took 3+months and several emails. Renting this unit was more trouble than it's worth
