About the property

This unique, newly remodeled 1922 carriage/guest house is set within a beautiful Japanese garden just behind NE Portland's Yakuza Lounge in the popular Alberta Arts District. With its sanded plaster plank walls & charming, open-plan layout, the Kuza Garden Cottage is an artful blend of the urban & bucolic in the heart of NE Portland.

The Kuza Garden Cottage sleeps 1-2 adults. The 350 sq ft cabin has been newly updated with birch flooring and simple, contemporary design details including a new, queen sized bed with 540 thread count prima cotton bedding; full bath with sunken, step-in shower and Mada products; full kitchen with settings for 4; sitting room; bedroom flat screen TV with cable and DVD; A/C and complementary Wifi.

Set in a lush, serene and beautifully landscaped Japanese Garden with 24 access to hot tub, coldwater plunge tub and outdoor shower, guests are mere steps away from 5 of Portland's most popular destination restaurants (Yakuza Lounge, DOC, Beast, Autentica and Cocotte), 3 blocks from New Seasons Market and 2 blocks from the burgeoning Alberta Arts District and the hugely popular Last Thursday monthly arts festival.

Located just behind Yakuza Lounge, NE Portland's popular modern Japanese pub and izakaya, the Kuza Garden Cabin makes for a truly one-of-a-kind getaway for out-of-town guests and locals alike. Enjoy access to some of Portland's most buzzed about and acclaimed fine dining restaurants with room service available from Yakuza during regular operating hours. Enjoy hand-crafted morning coffee at Extracto or breakfast at Cup & Saucer. Then explore the bustling galleries, shops, restaurants, bars and entertainment venues on nearby Alberta before heading home to this romantic, urban retreat.

'Bed & Dinner' packages are available in partnership with Yakuza (modern Japanese) and DOC (local ingredient-focused, Italian-inspired fare) restaurants. Bed & Dinner package includes accomodations in the Kuza Garden Cottage plus a 3-course dinner for 2 with drinks and/or wine pairings at either restaurant.

About Dayna McErlean

Originally from Staten Island, NY - I'm a mom, restaurant owner and real-estate developer with a background in the arts. I've lived in this neighborhood since moving to Portland in 1996 when I opened a mixed-use art and performance space just around the corner from were I live and work now. I own the building that houses Yakuza and Beast restaurants and live upstairs from Yakuza with my young son. I also own DOC restaurant, located just up the street across Killingsworth. I am huge soak and steam fan and designed the Japanese garden behind Yakuza to include a hot tub, cold plunge tub and outdoor shower - a hidden gem that you'll enjoy as a guest at the Kuza Garden Cottage. I look forward to welcoming you and introducing you to this vibrant neighborhood.

Why Dayna McErlean chose Northeast Portland

I have lived and worked in this neighborhood since first moving to Portland in 1996. I designed and built out this building and have loved watching new restaurants join us on NE 30th & Killingsworth. It has been extremely gratifying to see the neighborhood come into its own.

What makes this cabin unique

The Kuza Garden Cottage offers guests a peaceful and serene retreat that's also mere steps from some of the most buzzed about and acclaimed fine-dining establishments in the Portland restaurant scene. We offer Bed & Dinner Packages that include 3 course meals with wine/drink pairings from either Yakuza or DOC. After dinner, take in the festival-like party that's Last Thursday on Alberta, then leave the crowds behind and head home to a late night soak in the hot and cold plunge tubs in your Japanese garden setting. Enjoy a nightcap at Yakuza before turning in for the night in this quiet, urban retreat. Skip the hotels and experience the real Portland in a one-of-a-kind way. We look forwarding to seeing you soon.

A favorite place to stay in SE

  • 5 of 5

Another great stay at this cozy place. So comfortable, with everything I needed . I really enjoy the hot tub for a nice soak after a busy day. The bed is super comfortable, the space is nice, and the location can't be beat. Very walkable.

Cute and very convenient

  • 4 of 5

Cute, well-appointed little "cabin" in Alberta district. We enjoyed the area and the ability to walk to many places and also have ample street parking nearby. It was our first visit to Portland and we really enjoyed it. Friendly people, great food and fun things to explore! If you are not used to city noises (such as trash collectors at 4:30 AM) or are a light sleeper, then you might consider a sound machine or something similar to help block out some of the noise from nearby. Perfect spot for two people or a small family. We will be back to Oregon soon!

Cute, cozy spot

  • 5 of 5

This place was the best! Perfect for my quick trip to Portland. The neighborhood was great and had everything I needed within walking distance. The hot tub and dip pool were so nice, not private, but I don't mind that. The space was very comfortable. I am sure I will be back.

Absolutely wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

Perfect place to stay for our family of 4. Our hostess made sure we had everything we needed and brought extra bedding for the kids. We were able to enjoy the soaking tub, which was incredible in the cool night air. The restaurant was delicious. I would definitely recommend staying here. I know we will back!

Thank you

Quiet Place to Settle on a Monday and Tuesday

  • 5 of 5

I stayed from Sunday to Wednesday and I think that is key -- the restaurant is quiet on Sunday evening and was closed Monday and Tuesday, so I had the place to myself. If it had been Friday or Saturday I don't think I would have liked it -- you really are right on the patio of the restaurant. It is a nice little cottage -- my brother (who wasn't staying there) and I treated it as a home away from home as the kitchen and living area gave us everything we needed to cook some meals and hang out. It is best for one person or two people who don't need privacy from one another. There are no internal doors, and it is an open plan. As one person, I loved it. One thing -- the address on the gate is very hard to see and the back path is dark. Get your phone flashlight out!
