Palm Island is actually three islands. Knight Island (the most northern island bordered to the north by Stump Pass), Don Pedro island (the 'middle island), and Little Gasparilla island, the most southernly island, were originally three separate island, divided by passes. When the pass between Knight Island and Don Pedro, and the pass between Don Pedro and Little Gasparilla Island closed in (sometime in the 1960s) the islands became one, with more than seven miles of beach.

Palm Island Resort encompasses the northern two miles and is a private resort area, with golf cart or walking access only. Rum Bay Restaurant located inside the resort along with a small gift shop. Rum Bay resturant offers “red beard the pirate ” shows every Friday night at 6pm. Please call ahead to ensure Red Beard is not out in the Gulf plundering! The food is fair, the show is always a good time- which children love. Should you not have a boat, the resort also has a water taxi which offers free rides to other restaurant on the mainland. Leverocks.

The area of the island you are staying on is known as Palm Island Estates and is approximately two and a half miles long, including Knight Island, and over the big bridge, Don Pedro Island. South of the road access, lies the Don Pedro Island State Park which is approximately 135 acres of natural, pristine land. You can access the state park by boat or a beach walk. There are bathroom facilities in the park area.

To the south of the State Park lies Little Gasparilla, an island accessible by private boat with approximately 300 homes, mostly part-time residents. Development there was started somewhere during the turn of the century. Some of the older 'fish camps' still can be seen. Today, there are some exclusive homesites and two condominium communities.

Palm Island Estates is home to approximately 100 families who live here full time. There are approximately 325 existing residences, some used every weekend, others on a part time basis. Many owners rent their homes when they are not using them.

When Palm Island Estates was platted in the late 1950s, a bridge to the mainland was built. In the early 60s, the Intracoastal waterway was dredged and the bridge removed for good. There are approximately 750 platted lots in this area with 453 owners.

There are about ten school aged children who live full time on the island. The parents 'boat pool' them to school or they travel via ferry to the mainland to catch the bus at the landing.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

Breath of Heaven is one of the best locations on the entire island. House is steps from the beach and it is off the main Gulf Blvd so no one drives by the front. We went directly into relaxation mode from the moment we arrived. If you enjoy privacy and relaxation then you cannot beat this spot on Palm Island. Ted was helpful showing us around the property and answer any questions about the area. We rented a golf cart and a boat during the week which made the trip even better. Hope to return soon.

Just as good the 2nd time

  • 5 of 5

It feels almost foolish to write this review. This was our second trip to Breath of Heaven and the previous review still stands strong two years later. Unlike last time, however, we got to meet Ted at the house and have a good chat with him before we settled in for a relaxing time on one of the most private and most quiet beaches we’ve ever been on. It is incredibly peaceful. We had such a great time with the kids and just relaxing on the “below deck”, enjoying the breeze and watching some storms pass by in the Gulf. Last time the water was a bit choppy so we got to use some body boards but this time the water was almost serene, allowing us to see quite a few crabs and fish. We were also able to snag some rather impressive shells deeper in the water. In fact, a couple of the shells we thought might be empty weren’t. We found a rather hefty conch and a couple hermit crabs that caught us by surprise. That was pretty cool. What about the sea turtles? Well, we didn’t get to see one, but we did wake up one morning to find a new nest just a few yards from the house.

I recommend Breath of Heaven with no reservations at all. It’s a bit worn so it has its quirks, but it is quiet, all the appliances worked flawlessly, and the view is really hard to beat. Grab some fresh fish or shrimp from Placida Fish Market and grill ‘em up at the house or enjoy a meal at Farlow’s followed by some of the best ice cream you'll ever have at A Better Scoop. Either way, you won’t be disappointed when the sun sets across the Gulf and the worries of the world get put on hold for just a little while longer.

Great location and house for our family vacation.

  • 5 of 5

Must be one of the most perfect locations on the island: right on the beach but with an inlet right behind. We stayed with our three young daughters and enjoyed the beach and kayaking in the inlet. A beautiful house in a beautiful location. The host was great too.
