About The Owner

My husband and I truly love the Starved Rock area. Both of us like running, so there’s nothing like stepping out our door onto some of Illinois’ most coveted trails. We are also avid cyclists and enjoy being only moments away from the I&M trail system, and about 30 minutes from the Hennepin Canal. I also enjoy birding, which keeps me plenty busy given the area’s diverse eco-systems. And can’t forget to mention the local golf is great.

The Owner purchased this cabin in 2006

Why The Owner chose Illinois

Starved Rock is the perfect weekend getaway for us. While the trails allure most of us, there are plenty of opportunities for everyone: horseback riding, canoeing, boating, fishing, star gazing, or just taking time to relax with friends and family. We love the local shopping, so be sure to stop by the quaint little town of Utica which is full of charm. Try a tasting at one of two wine shops and then pick up some gourmet popcorn or cupcakes. Afterwards, don’t forget to stop by Duffy’s for a great burger.

What makes this cabin unique

Since we're nature buffs, there was no better location for us than to be tucked in the back of the resort with the wildlife preservation as our backdrop. Lounging on the deck is perfect for relaxing moments. Grab a cup of coffee, close your eyes, and listen to nature’s symphony. There’s nothing like it.

Clean, well kept unit (plus notes on the complex)

  • 4 of 5

Overall, I was pleased with this rental. The cabin was clean and stocked with towels, TP, soaps, trash bags and even some bottled water in the fridge. Kitchen had ample cookware to accommodate all our needs as well. Owner was prompt in scheduling and answering questions.

Being a 3-level unit, the heating was quite uneven however. There was at least a 10 degree difference in the temperature from the upstairs bedroom versus the basement bedrooms. Be aware that you'll need to set the thermostat carefully, and perhaps sleep with a window open upstairs like we did or use a fan. If you go during the summer months, the reverse could be true with AC running.

Also, although the mattress we slept on upstairs was comfortable, it seems to made of or covered with some type of fabric that makes quite a rustling sound when you turn over at night. As a light sleeper this bothered me.

Notes on the Grand Bear Property overall (not a critique of this particular unit):

The complex itself is quite dark at night, with roadways that twist and turn. The buildings (comprised of 4 attached cabin/condos) are not clearly marked, and although the unit numbers are positioned above each doorway they are also not clearly illuminated. We had some difficulty locating this unit (at the back of the complex) when we arrived. Be sure to have a printed map with you to assist...and you still may have trouble.

We were disappointed that the "Enchanted Forest" (indoor gaming/ride center) was not open during our visit. A sign on the door simply said "closed for remodeling." If you're counting on entertaining your family here, you'll want to check and see if it is open again. We did visit the indoor waterpark (about $20/person) and enjoyed that.

The complex is set out a bit from grocery/shopping. Just be aware that if you need supplies you'll have about a 10 minute drive to hit any major retailers. Be sure to visit Starved Rock on your visit...and ask for a map with some marked suggestions on where to hike, given the time you have and the physical capabilities of your group.

Great Spot for a Group Visiting Starved Rock

  • 5 of 5

Our group of nine people stayed at Sue's cabin in the Grizzly Jack's resort area when visiting for a long weekend. We had a great time. The cabin is very spacious and the pull-out sofas (although there are also 7 beds), four bathrooms, and laundry facilities came in handy. Having all of the towels we needed and toiletries provided was also appreciated. The place was very clean and the kitchen was well stocked with everything we needed to prepare meals for the entire group. Having dishwasher and laundry detergent provided was very convenient. Very good WiFi too.

We were not there for the water park but we did take advantage of the proximity to Starved Rock. The closest hiking trails are directly across the street from the resort and the main entrance to the park is less than half a mile away from the resort.

Sue is a great host. Booking couldn't have been any easier and she quickly answered every question I had. My security deposit was submitted for return before I even got home. I will definitely look into staying at Sue's property the next time I have a group that wants to visit Starved Rock!

Excellent location and beautiful home.

  • 5 of 5

We spent 5 nights at this home and what a wonderful place to stay! The home was very clean and comfortable. The location is very convenient and close to many parks and hiking trails. The cabin is at the very end of the road and this ended up being wonderful because it was much quieter than the area closer to the road (especially over the weekend). Parking did become an issue over the weekend as the other cabins were full and we ended up being parked in but everyone was nice and happy to move vehicles so we could get out. Starved Rock State Park was by far our favorite place to go. It was just gorgeous and we are talking about another trip in the spring when the water is running faster.

The Place to be in Starved Rock

  • 5 of 5

This was our first leg of our 11 day road trip and what a way to begin. The cabin is very beautiful and spacious and became the focal point of our time in the Starved Rock area. We went hiking through the park, boating on the Illinois River, horseback riding and discovering all the little gems each of the small towns in the area had to offer. Then we knew we would always have a clean, comfortable place to return to each day. The kitchen was well equipped which allowed us to cook many meals there. Sue is a gracious host who never minded me calling with questions I had. It was a great experience.

2016 Starved Rock Family Adventure...

  • 5 of 5

The twelve of us had such a great few days staying at your cabin. Our age range was from 4 years old up to 68. Each and everyone has a special memory from the beautiful setting to the wonderful ice cold air conditioning. We will be visiting frequently since we found this gem at the end of the road. Cudos to owner Sue for making our journey so memorable.

Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

We spent two nights at this property and found it to be a wonderful place for large parties to relax for a weekend. The kitchen is well stocked with supplies, there are ample beds, and the location is in walking distance of the state park. In particular the property manager was very responsive to our requests.
