We really enjoyed our vacation at the house. We had 3-4 adults and seven kids (ranging in age from 1.5-13 years) staying the property. The house is somewhat rustic but comfy. Bedrooms are very small, but the living area was more than adequate for our group. Kitchen has everything you would need to cook (except for microwave). There is a tv in the living room and another in one of the bedrooms. No TV reception as far as I know, but they had a large collection of tapes and dvds, so everyone could find something. We also uitilized the local library at great barrington to take out some more books and dvds. There is a nice collection of sports equipment in the basement, as well as some kids toys, a bunch of books from baby to adult, fishing poles, some bikes, and of course the boats (with a decent supply of life jackets). The grills are charcoal, so buy some if you want to use them. The fire pit is a nice touch if you like making fires. The lake is better for boating than for swimming. There is small clear area near the shore, but it has a lot of plant matter closer to the shore. If you're a good swimmer, further away from the shore is better, but for little kids it was somewhat of a problem. There are also beavers in the water, but those seem to show up only closer to sunset. Not too many bugs based on the location, but we did get some bites, so bring some bug spray. Shopping is close by (10-15 minutes) in great barrington. There is a also a great plaground, tennis and basketball courts (equipment available at the house) five minute drive away at French park. Overall, everyone really enjoyed our stay. I took a star off because one of the bathrooms had issues with water in the bathtub (cold water didn't work-the owner said he'll look into it) and because we ran into a problem with garbage pick-up. Also, verizon and at&t had reception, but t-mobil would not start working until great barrington (I could get roaming in French Park, but very poor reception). No wi-fi available. Overall, everyone really enjoyed our stay and I would recommend it to our friends.
We had a wonderful stay at the lake house! The view of the lake from the balcony is beautiful. The living room is really spacious and comfortable! The area is gorgeous and we really enjoyed kayaking on the lake and the fire pit outside! Just a short drive to Great Barrington and all its great shops, restaurants, and amazing Soco ice cream!
Our extended family (8 people + dog) stayed here for a week in July and really enjoyed it, despite the lack of AC during a heat wave. It was easy to kayak the lake, we could all eat dinner on the deck, we made s'mores around the fire pit, and the kids loved all the toys and games (plus the badminton net and hammock). I would definitely recommend it, but renters should be aware of a couple of things:
1. There's no Internet, and while the owner said AT&T cell service is excellent, we got virtually no signal with our Verizon or T-Mobile devices. (This was a challenge for me personally, because I had to work part of the week and was hoping to set up a mobile hotspot. But the adorable town of Great Barrington is very close by, with free Wi-Fi in the library.)
2. It's a pretty rustic and natural setting, which was a plus for some of us but not for everyone. We saw a number of beavers -- legit! -- swimming in the lake, which was really cool. We also saw a water snake near the dock, which was not as cool, and pretty much kept us from swimming the rest of the week!
If you don't mind getting up close and personal with nature, and are more interested in kayaking than swimming (or visit in the winter instead) then it's a really nice, cozy, pet-friendly place for a big group.
We stayed here during the coldest week in Feb. to go skiing. There was plenty of room for everyone to gather together, to eat or work on art projects. The kitchen was small but functional and had plenty of dishes, utensils and large enough pots and pans. The only thing missing was a microwave. The beds were quite comfortable with plenty of extra blankets. The basement had the ping pong table but, it was unheated down there, so we didn't use it.
It was plenty warm in the house even with the temperatures below zero. There were shovels available to clear off the small snow. The driveway and parking area was plowed.
There were several ski places in the area to choose from.
Bill was quite accommodating and very helpful as we made arrangements to stay here.
We appreciate your generosity and kindness, thank you.
What a lovely house! it was raining the weekend we stayed, so we didn't get to use the lake much, but it was still cozy as ever and perfect for our group of friends. It's a gorgeous view on the deck, plenty of space, big comfy couch, and all the amenities we needed. Thanks Bill!
We stayed here with a group of friends over the weekend. The house is great, large, and clean. There are a lot of activities that you can enjoy during the stay such as badminton, volleyball, soccer and kayak. We love the deck that the house offers; a perfect view for an early morning coffee and BBQ. The kitchen is fully equipped and the basement have a lot of lifeguard jackets (all sizes) and many sports gear and equipment. There are 2 charcoal grills, a television (but DVD and VHS only), no Wifi, no signals with T-Mobile phone there (not sure about other carriers.) We were very sad that our short trip has come to an end. Thanks William for being such an awesome host. He is very helpful, nice and friendly. If we had any questions he always responds to our message quite quickly. We would love to stay here again. Highly recommended!
