Exceeded our Expectations!

We loved it here. The location is perfect and the amenities plentiful. The cottage was very comfortable for 2 people and very clean. The photos in the listing are accurate, but it's even better than it looks. We enjoyed exploring the island and admiring all the houses in our golf cart. Kayaking in Safety Harbour was easy. It's so much fun.The kitchen had everything we needed, but believe the listing, that the groceries on this island are practically non existent. Don't be afraid to bring lots of food to the cottage. The ferry folks load it on for you and take it off. Barnacles is good, but how many meals can you eat there? Be prepared to make your own breakfast and lunch. No restaurant is as nice as eating at the cottage. We ate most of our meals outside overlooking the water. The lounges and chairs had cushions so it was very comfortable for eating, reading, bird watching and napping. The host is on the island and is available to answer questions and help with anything you need.

A Piece of Paradise on North Captiva Island

  • 5 of 5

Caper Beach Cottage is one of the best vacation places we have ever rented. It is in a lovely location, so close to the water and so private. You have the choice of walking out the door forward to the sound, maybe 35 feet away, or walking in the opposite direction to Gary and Mary Ann's pier overlooking Safety Harbor. We spent a considerable amount of time there watching an osprey family.

Gary has 4 kayaks to choose from, and since we are avid paddlers we were happy. The kayaking was great, and having the good fortune to get up close and personal with a pod of bottle nose dolphins was an experience we will never forget.

We also took some lovely walks, swam, snorkeled and explored the island in the golf cart.

The cottage is lovely, and we were so impressed that Mary Ann outfitted it so completely and attractively. I don't how Gary read my husband's mind, but one of the first things I noticed was a bowl of Dove chocolates on the side table. They happen to be my husband's all-time favorites.

Gary is terrific. He is incredibly helpful; if you ask for an item you will get it quickly. He is also knowledgable about the area and takes you on an introductory tour of the island, Best of all, he is very friendly and thoughtful.

We LOVED this place and hope to come back.

Great vacation spot for peace and renewal!

  • 5 of 5

I went to Caper Cottage for a short 2 day getaway for a little self reflection and mediation. It was the perfect spot! Quiet and peaceful. Got up in the morning to watch the sunrise, saw dolphins just a few feet off shore. Watched the planes coming in and taking off from the small grassy runway. There are several beaches on the gulf side to visit, swim, and watch the sunset in the evening. The kitchen is well equipped and and the cottage is quite comfortable.

Wonderful place to get away from it all

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I booked a stay at Caper Cottage based only on what we read in VRBO and on some other similar sites. It was everything we hoped for and more. It was our first time to the island, and even though the descriptions are wonderful, it's hard to convey the experience until you go.

First is the totally relaxed pace. You are truly unplugged. After about 24 hours our internal clocks were on "island time" without care of schedules, clocks, or deadlines. The main events were sunrise and sunset, neither of which should be missed. Grab a cup of coffee and a chair and watch the sky light up right outside the cottage. In the evening take a bottle of wine to the gulf side and watch the kids and adults play as the sun sets.

It's hard to find anyone on this island who is not smiling - its impossible not to smile while there.

The cottage itself is on a beautiful piece of property where the owner's home is located. That said we only saw him once after he picked us up from the water taxi. It is very quiet, private, and peaceful. As far as we could tell its the only property like it on the island. Larger homes to rent seem plentiful (and would also be wonderful) however for two people, Caper Cottage is hard to beat.

Logistics - Island Girl Charters water taxi was great. They help you load and unload and their approach starts getting you into the laid back pace. Pine Island taxi, between the airport and water taxi, is also top notch. We had great drivers both ways who gave us some great local knowledge. Both of these services were able to adapt to a last minute flight change (our flights were cancelled at 11pm the night before we left). Great service. Put in a grocery order at Publix. Gary will send you the forms. The land taxi will take you there for a quick and easy pickup. Don't forget to order enough, there's not much you can buy on the island. A previous reviewer equated the on-island market selection to that of a gas station convenience store - which is accurate. Great folks there, just not a big selection. Also, the grill at Caper Cottage comes with charcoal and is a great way to chill out before dinner!

The cottage has a golf cart and a couple of old bikes you can use, as well as kayaks. Can't get much simpler - and I love it.

We'll be back for sure.

Anniversary Getaway - from it all!

  • 5 of 5

Caper Beach Cottage was the perfect getaway place for our 15th wedding anniversary. We enjoyed our time on the island! Waking each morning to the sunrise and ocean breezes will be missed greatly. The fishing from the beach an d point was fantastic - we caught lots of fish. The state park is amazing and we would highly recommend walking to the end of the island and also enjoying a quiet happy hour on the "beach logs"! The cottage is perfect for a couple. We made just about every meal and had everything we needed. The grill is awesome, too! One night while cooking two dolphin frolicked 10 feet off the beach and we watched while we cooked. What a perfect place!

NO CARS IN THIS UNSPOILED PARADISE,

As you may know, Upper Captiva Island is accessed only by boat, or by small plane into a private airstrip. The island is approximately 4 miles long and a ½ mile wide at its widest. A little more than one-half of the island is owned by the state of Florida and is managed as a preserve. There are about 320 homes on the island and of those, approximately 120 are available for rent. Four small restaurants, a general stores and two beach boutiques comprise the only stores on the island. There are about 70 full-time residents. Island transportation is by electric golf carts which helps to keep the island a peaceful and relaxing get-a-way. Beachcombing, fishing, and walking the nature trails in the State Preserve are a special treat for those who enjoy the simple things in life.
