Casa Salto del Caballo, situated in the small village of La Fontañera, offers stunning views towards the Natural Park Serra de São Mamede and the Castle of Marvão in the Alto Alentejo of Portugal. For this is a historic building dated from the late `19th century with the added bonus of having some unique characteristics: Firstly, it is slap bang on the Spanish Portuguese border. You can literally come in from the Spanish side and walk out through the other doors onto the magnificent São Mamede Natural Park in Portugal.
Not surprisingly, this strategic position has lent it a past always connected to the smuggling trade between Portugal and Spain.Up until 1992, when the borders opened mainly coffee and leather boots, but also bread, garlic or whatever was wanted on the other side was smuggled. As the front entrance is in Spain and the backdoor opens onto Portugal, it was a “casa dela duda” – a house in no-man’s land. Ultimately the Spanish ended the confusion by incorporating the whole property officially into Spain.

Dear holidaymaker, I live with my family since 1997 just a 'stone's throw' or better a 'Salto del Caballo' away from the property, but in Portugal, and really love this beautiful area.
Eva Schuster purchased this apartment in 1997
I'm sure you will like my 'Casa Salto del Caballo' as much as I do. I first saw it on a holiday myself and fell in love with the old historic building, that holds so many stories and secrets. At first it was just a dream to create a beautiful guest-house in this fantastic location and 10 years ago became reality. With a lot of experience by now, I will welcome you and your family and your pets exactly as I would like to be welcomed on my holiday.
The house is perfect for a short break in the B&B or a holiday in the apartment, enjoying a holiday in two countries. Discover the unknown Extremadura in Spain and meet rural Portugal in the natural park Serra de Sao Mamede. I provide maps of the area and lots of information on walks, trips and sights. I am happy to cook for you, lunch or dinner, 3 courses, traditional, Spanish or vegetarian meals, as you wish. You will also find everything that makes a family - holiday pleasant, lots of toys, books, cot, highchair, tricycle, a little swimming pool and all that in an extremely child-friendly country, sorry, countries.
My husband and I spent 12 days at Salto del Caballo in the spring of 2013. We loved the entire time we spent there. We toured the entire area, we cooked in our apartment, we ate lunches outside on the beautiful patio and we very much appreciated Eva's great advise and her cooking. The first night we were there Eva was preparing a meal for another group and invited us to be part of the dinner. We were so happy to do so as we had been on the road for two days. The meal was superb and the company made our first night there so delightful. Eva demonstrated throughout our visit a gracious, helpful, and insightful manner that made our time there quite relaxing and pleasant. Our favorite description of this unique property is "We slept in Spain and parked our car in Portugal." It is ideally located for sightseeing in both Portugal and Spain. We hope to bring family and freinds to this property some time in the future.
We (two adult couples) had a wonderful three night stay at Eva's house this month. Some of the highlights were - a warming fire waiting for us when we arrived on a rainy afternoon, food items for us to have for breakfast (so we didn't have to out shopping), a good washing machine and clothesline, and a very friendly hostess. We enjoyed taking walks along nearby lanes in the area (think it must have been Portugal), reading some of the great info about the area we found in our sitting room, and the short trips to Marvao and the nearby Roman bridge. I wish we could have stayed longer.
My husband and myself, along with our son and his wife had a very enjoyable stay at Salto Del Caballo. We felt like we had truly gotten away from it all at this tranquil place. There is no business of any kind in La Fontanera - the closest town with groceries or restaurants is about 10km away. Everyday we enjoyed nice walks through the Spanish or Portugese countryside. The kitchen in our Espana apartment had everything we needed to cook meals and we also did a lot of cooking on the grill outside our door. There is no microwave in the kitchen. Having a washing machine in the apartment was a big plus and there is a nice long line to hang clothes behind the property. The wi-fi at this property is excellent. This property is well-taken care of and it was a true pleasure to sit outside among all the plants. Eva was an excellent hostess full of good information about the surroundings and events in the area. Eva made sure we had clean towels every few days. A visit to Marvao, which is visible on top of big hill in the distance, is a place to definitely visit while staying here. We would definitely come back to Salto del Caballo again! Thank you again, Eva for a wonderful stay!
After spending time in Madrid, and a week at a resort in the Algarve, we were ready to get away. This place is the PERFECT get away. This is a quiet, beautiful, well kept, off the beaten path place to go. I wish we have had more time to spend there.
The fire place was so nice to have in the evening, and especially on the cool mornings. The pool would be perfect when the weather heats up, to cool down after all the the great hiking trails that are right out your front door.
Our hostess, Eva was what made PERFECT, even better. What a great lady. Thank you
My husband and I, along with our 2 dogs spent an amazingly relaxing week at Salto de Caballo. Eva was a wonderful host- so knowledgeable about the area, anticipating our needs, and always available should we need anything. The apartment was clean, charmingly decorated, and had everything we needed. There is enough in the area to fill your days with trips and hiking, but to be honest, we were very lazy. The weather was so nice for February that we spent most of our days sitting in in the garden reading and dreaming of what to cook on the wood grill. For city people, the quiet is priceless. We did manage to go to Marvao, the Eagle's Castle in Portugal, which is highly impressive. We would definitely come back and have already recommended Salto de Caballo to several friends. Eva, thanks so much for a memorable vacation!
