Check in to Los Angeles’ hippest neighborhood (Forbes Magazine)– and one of Silver Lake’s most stunning stays. Nestled in the heart of this great city and just minutes from Hollywood, Downtown L.A., Burbank, Universal City and West Hollywood, lies this luxury “Shangri-La.” This private lower unit, luxury 1BR apt. (750 sq. ft.) sits atop a lush hillside garden with terraces and Spa and boasts breathtaking views of the Silver Lake reservoir, Griffith Observatory and Hollywood sign. And it’s just minutes walk away from L.A.'s best bars, restaurants, nightlife, coffee shops, and the amazing reservoir, the heart of this great neighborhood with its beautiful meadows and jogging path.
Inside the apartment, you’ll find everything you need to make your stay in L.A. movie star ready. The unit features all of the amenities of a fine hotel plus a fully appointed chef’s kitchen with brand new appliances and striking black granite countertops. Tastefully decorated with a mid-century flair, the comfortable living room (with 50” TV with HD DVR plus HBO/SHO) overlooks the spectacular hillside view. The sliding doors open to a private deck and a dramatic view that overlooks the ½ acre park-like garden full of lawns, terraces, flowers and fruit trees. The hillside yard is a sanctuary, including a large and secluded patio with built in spa, perched on the hillside for perfect sunset viewing. The large yard is shared with me and my other tenant, but we hardly use it and with its many private terraces and patio you will feel like you have this entire Shangri LA to yourselves.
Other featured amenities include an outdoor gas grill for backyard barbeques, with outdoor seating for large groups and a striking bathroom with a jacuzzi tub. The large comfortable bedroom with new plush queen sized bed has a huge picture window featuring the gorgeous view, (and a 40' TV with HD DVR).
The apartment offers off street parking, a full laundry and optional daily maid service.
Wonderful shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, music venues, galleries and all the other attributes of an artistic enclave are abundant and easily accessible from the apartment, many by foot or a just a short drive. Just around the corner you you'll find a few of Silver Lake's trendiest spots, the Cha Cha Lounge, The Red Lion Tavern, Silver Lake Wine, Gingergrass, Silverlake Coffee, The Edendale Grill, Home Restaurant, Michelangelo's... The list just begins.
Although you feel like you're in a hillside lake resort in the Italian countryside, the apartment is right near 4 of the city's main arteries, the 5, 101, 110, and the 2 freeways are minutes away. So the entire city is easily accessible from here. Head west on the 10 to the beaches of Santa Monica and Venice, or you can hop the 2 west to Pasadena and enjoy a day in old town and the gorgeous Huntington Gardens and Museum (Gainsborough's Blue Boy) and the astounding collection at the Norton Simon museum (many Van Goghs, and a Raphael). If you're here for work you can hop the 5 to Universal, Warner Brothers, Disney and Dreamworks, all a short 10 minute drive. Or take surface streets to the Paramount lot, a 10 minute drive. Downtown is even closer. Enjoy the LA Philharmonic at the Frank Gehry designed Walt Disney Concert Hall, an opera at the Dorothy Chandler, a play or musical at the Mark Taper or a concert at the Staples Center or Nokia Theatre at LA live. Hit MOMA, or LACMA. It's all nearby, Silver Lake really is the perfect central location to visit all of LA. And my place offers serene and functional comfort, a perfect home base for your visit.
Silver Lake has been an architect's playground for decades, many famous designers have experimented here, building what have become iconic examples of mid century modern designs. You will find many classic Neutras, Schindlers, Lautners, Ellwood, Ain, Lloyd Wrights, down the block and around the corners. My favorite is an exquisite Lloyd Wright only three houses up the block. It was home to Anais Nin, where she wrote many of her trailblazing diaries. Many young architects are continuing in that tradition of experimental modernism and many new future icons continue to pop up all over the neighborhood.
This is a brand new listing for me here and I may have no reviews posted yet. But I do have a long track record as a host with my other vacation rentals in Silver Lake and my very special Hale in Kauai, Hawaii which I have been operating for 7 years and it is one of the most popular rentals on the island. Check out some of my reviews on my other rentals for the enthusiastic raves over the high level of hospitality my guests enjoy.
** 1/15/16: Please Note, the L.A. Department of Water and Power has partially drained the lake to do some repair work on its foundation as it transforms from reservoir to natural lake, it’s not exactly clear how long this will take. But don't worry, the view is still expansive and beautiful, and there is still the remnant of a rather large puddle that continues to reflect the lights at night to magical effect. I will update this message as the time frame of this event clarifies. I just thought you should know.
I have been a long term resident of Silver Lake, over 20 years now. I'm originally from NY and spent my early adult life as a pioneer of the East Village in NYC going to NYU, then working as a set designer in the NY theatre. I came out to California to work with architects doing specialty design for many high end casinos and hotels in Las Vegas and around the world. I'm just another Silver Lake artist/eccentric, living with cats, doing my design work and enjoying life in Silver Lake.
Jeffrey Schneider purchased this apartment in 2014
I came to Silver Lake in the early 90's to visit a friend who had just moved out here. I fell in love with the life here and the community and I knew immediately that this was the next step in my life's journey.
When I gaze over the lake at the hills I feel like I'm in a resort in a European hill town. And yet this is probably the most vital metropolis in the US (after NY). To enjoy such serenity in the middle of such a large city is really special.
Wonderful apartment with a fabulous kitchen stocked with coffee beans and grinder. All we needed was the creamer to make a delicious Latte in the milk frother which was also part of the kitchen. The bed was very comfortable in a spacious bedroom. The view overlooked the remains of the reservoir which when filled will be beautiful. It was still a lovely view of Griffith Observatory and the Hollywood sign. The hot tub at the bottom of the yard was lovely especially at night with the cafe lights on. A few new cushions on some of the many seats and chairs would help the yard look more inviting. Location was good because we were close to the many thing we had planned. Totally enjoyed our stay.
We had a really great weekend in Silverlake at this super-cool pad. The hot tub view is unreal and the cats were a bonus :-). We look forward to coming back at some point.

The apartment is great, better than the pictures, with everything you need during your stay. The grounds are beautiful and Jeffrey, the host was a very accommodating and responsive. The location is ideal and close to everything from Downtown LA to Hollywood an more. It was a perfect get-a-way!
My wife and I really enjoyed staying in this spacious centrally located place. Owner was nice enough to provide off street parking. Unit was perfectly clean, modern, stylish and well maintained. View of Griffith and Hollywood sign from patio which leads to terraced gardens, BBQ, spa and plenty of seating. Friendly happy cats as well. Bottle of wine to greet us. Shower is modern and works great. Small caveats: bed seemed more like a full than queen but was comfortable. A lot of steps down and up with bags. Also you can pretty much hear the person in unit above whenever moving around (otherwise very quiet). Doors need some WD-40. Would stay again for sure.
We had a wonderful stay at this comfortable Silver Lake apartment. The place is large and clean and well appointed throughout. It's a little tricky to find, but Jeffrey, the owner, provided excellent directions, and even had a bottle of wine for us. There are a lot of things to like about the place, but the big winner is looking out the back windows. The lot has amazing views down over the Silver Lake reservoir and to the Hollywood sign and Griffith Observatory beyond. The terraced yard is full of amazing local plants and trees with gorgeous flowers, all of which is looked over by about 4 or 5 cats that prowl the grounds.
I think the capper is the hot tub, which is perched on one of the terraces in a spot that is secluded from the surrounding homes and makes you feel private in a very busy city. We were in the tub each day of our visit, soaking away the fatigue of the day.
This area of Silver Lake was very convenient for us as we ended up visiting places in both East and West LA, so the location is central, with a great little coffee shop at Silverlake Coffee, and several great breakfast places just down the hill from us. The Red Lion tavern is also super authentic German, with outstanding sausages. One thing to note, the roads leading up to the apartment are very narrow and steep, so just be prepared to go slow and be courteous to the other drivers and you'll be fine.
We're so happy we chose to stay with Jeffrey! You will be too.
We arrived in the evening to the apartment, and it was a little difficult to find in the dark. But don't let that deter you; this place is such a gem! Fully stocked with everything you may need (little shampoo, cond, soap, blowdryer, and even coffee, creamer, and a bag of ice in the kitchen), as well as a full kitchen with utensils and cooking equipment. Very comfy bed in the only bedroom. Jetted tub. But it was the patio, hot tub, and outdoor grounds that truly make this place special. It's like a multi-tiered secret garden with a hot tub on the edge of the world. Sitting in the jacuzzi at night and seeing all the lights below while enjoying the quiet summer night was soooo refreshing for this big city Vegas girl. We could have spent our entire trip out there. Conveniently located abour 3 mins fom a CVS, Whole Foods, Starbucks, and liqour store. I posted some pics on Facebook of the apartment and grounds, and already 5 ppl have requested the listing! We went to Universal Studios while there, and it was an 18 min drive. The super nice owner Jeffrey introduced himself on the second day when we ran into him in the garden, which was fine with us. We enjoy our privacy, but we do like meeting with the owner if possible. Tips: When arriving to the apartment, the flat area to park your car in is just arond the corner from the very steep driveway hidden behind a bush. Drive around the corner and you will see it. Backing in is easiest. There are steep stairs you must climb down to the apt, as well as to explore the grounds and get to the hot tub. I do not recommend this apt for disabilities or very small children. There is only one bedroom and small couch for sleeping. If you have more than 2 or 3 ppl I recommend bringing a camping cot or sleeping bag for them to sleep on. This apt would not sleep more than 4 ppl comfortably. Love this place!
