Step back in time for a relaxing romantic retreat in an authentic medieval village unchanged for centuries. Situated in the Burgundy wine district, Flavigny Sur Ozerain was chosen as the site for the movie 'Chocolat' for it's old world charm and sense of timelessness. Previously an artist's loft, this barn has been converted into a simple yet surprisingly contemporary home, ancient on the exterior with all of the modern conveniences inside. Come stroll the quiet streets of the walled hilltop village, listen to the church bells mark the time, and experience a life before all of the hustle of today's rat race!
3 hours drive southeast of Paris(an hour and twenty minutes on the TGV!) and an hour northwest of Dijon, between Beaune and Chablis, this home can offer a serene escape or act as the perfect springboard to the delights of Burgundy and the Cote D'Or. With the Restaurant de L'Abbaye, La Grange, and the Creperie Les Ursulines right in town, one needn't leave the village's serenity, but with Alesia's ruins and fabulous restaurant Le Cheval Blanc, Semur en Auxois's vibrant medieval shopping district, the Abbaye Fontenay, and Saulieu nearby there are many temptations to explore.
Come explore the joy of life in the French countryside, and discover what you love most about this enchanting destination!

Kirk and Mary Kate Saunders split their time, and their hearts, between their homes in Laguna Beach, California, and Flavigny Sur Ozerain. With their teen-age sons Kian and Rory, their families and their architecture and physical therapy practices in California and the U.S., Laguna remains 'home,' but Flavigny steals all their free time! The charm, the bells, the food and especially the people of Flavigny draw them back as often as possible.
Mary Kate Saunders purchased this house in 2011
We have named this home 'Le Cadeau,' 'the gift.' Our dear friends, the O'Neals introduced us to Flavigny's charm, offering us a visit to their home in 2007, and later assisted us in purchasing it. We feel that the opportunity to experience this treasure is a gift we were given, and a gift that we want to pass on to our family and friends, old and new!
There are many favorite aspects to life in Flavigny, but marking time with the bells stands out, along with purchasing croissants from the bakery truck every morning and lunch at La Grange. Sitting with a glass of wine on the balcony, watching the sun set over Monsieur & Madame Grob's lovely garden isn't bad either!
We had a wonderful stay at Le Cadeau Francais in the heart of Flavigny sur Ozerain, a village that is even more attractive and charming than revealed by the many available photos. The house is simply beautiful, with rustic elements (exposed beams and stonework) combined with impressive original artwork and deft decorative touches. We spent one rainy day just reading and watching the fire in the fireplace/wood-stove (though we took a walk in the drizzle - the town is fabulous even on a rainy day) and it was great. If we ever get back to this area we'll definitely try to stay here again.
I've rented close to 20 houses/apartments in France and this was my favourite. Superb location. Central to many points of interest but still off the beaten track. The house was well appointed with everything we needed to have a super week. Would certainly return.
We really enjoyed our 3 week visit to Flavigney and the surrounding areas. The leaves were just changing, the weather was absolutely beautiful and the stay was memorable. There was plenty of room for the 3 of us to relax and enjoy the atmosphere and charm of the area and accommodations. The 3 restaurants in town were comfortable and served delicious food. A great place to walk and enjoy the charm of the village. There is a small grocery store in the village and a short drive into Semur there is a new large Intermarche for shopping. It is about an hours drive from Beaume and Dijon, in addition to other medieval villages that are well worth visiting.
The property had a small washer and dryer for our use and was clean and well maintained.
The villa was a most charming place to stay in this historic village. It was quiet, beautifully decorated and well maintained. We had all the amenities we needed. We would definitely recommend this home to our friends and have. We even met others during our visit and recommended it. We would definitely go back. It was also a great location to use as home base to take day trips around the area. We went to Beaune, Alesia, Vezaley, biking along the canal after renting bikes from Rando fitness in Venarey Les Lames, riding to Abbey De Fontanay, and chateaus. The owners prepared us for our visit by providing written and verbal information from directions to restaurants, to clear directions on where to park, locate the key, dispose of trash, etc. asked us what questions we had or what else we might need. Outstanding customer service. This villa was just what we wanted to spend time celebrating life in the beautiful French countryside.
We simply loved the place. The house is not only charming - it has everything anyone would need. And it is right in the middle of a surrounding (the city of Flavigny) who's charm one cannot believe until you are really there. We had a great vacation with so many memories, that we strongly recommend this - including the beautiful house - to anyone reading this. We have promised ourselves that we will be back next year.
As soon as we walked into the Saunders house it became a home. The exterior entrance beautifully reflects the village, with light coming through the majestic windows. The interior design is modern, yet classic. The garden view is stunning. You sit on the deck, with a glass of excellent local wine, and you don't want to be anywhere else.
The great room includes the kitchen and living/dinging room which is welcoming for entertaining. Friends can gather around outside or inside at community-size tables and cook together in the fully-equipped kitchen. The couch opens up to a very comfortable double bed. The master bedroom is like a cool, urban loft with another comfortable double bed and a twin-sized bed tucked into a private corner.
And when you go outside to walk around the village, the locals are friendly and helpful.
There are only two restaurants and one small grocery store so make a stop to the Costco-like Super U on the way into the village, load up on necessities & luxuries, and go enjoy cooking and dining in the Saunders sanctuary in Flavigny.
