Before entering the gated property, view the iconic Hollywood sign and the beautiful, rolling Hollywood Hills. Once inside, this exquisite, secluded retreat is a lavish, private home featuring a spacious living room, stunning dining room with large pocket doors separating it from living room and adjoining solarium, gourmet kitchen, four large bedrooms, 2.5 bathrooms and a relaxing, cozy wine cellar. Incorporated within the grounds is a tranquil front patio with dining table and oversized umbrella, ample seating, fireplace, fountain and covered front porch with plush seating area. The backyard is an unparalleled tropical paradise with swimming pool, Jacuzzi, large stainless steel chef’s barbeque, gas fire pit, and ample seating areas designed with relaxation in mind.

The home’s architectural style is Italianate, boasting a Tuscan exterior with classic California Craftsman interiors, including gorgeous mahogany staircase and woodwork, moldings, two Batch-Elder hearths and built-ins. The Van Ness property was originally built in 1922 -- during Hollywood early years -- by the family of United States President William Howard Taft. Since then, only three families have lived in the home.

The gourmet, fully appointed kitchen features an eight-burner/dual-oven stainless steel range; all stainless steel appliances, including dishwasher, refrigerator and microwave; stainless steel farm sink; baker’s rack; and more. The large, front-loading washer and dryer are adjacent to the kitchen. The home has central air and heat.

The Living Room features a large flat-screen television equipped with cable television with DVR and a Blu-ray player, as well as a library of movies for adults, kids and families to choose from. The Master bedroom and two additional bedrooms have queen-sized beds; the fourth bedroom has a full bed.

After enjoying the glitz and excitement of Hollywood’s entertainment offerings, nightlife, attractions and natural beauty, you’ll return to this peaceful retreat to experience this uniquely relaxing and beautiful Californian destination.

I immediately fell in love with this property because of its historic, architectural details and charm. It also had relatively untouched landscaping and exterior areas, which allowed me to create a totally new and unique environment, which is one of my favorite things about the property. There's nothing I enjoyed more than entering the gate after a hard day's work and being transported to this relaxing atmosphere, or watching my children running and exploring the property. This location is a true Hollywood gem.

What makes this house unique

Aside from all the great attributes of the house and property, the neighborhood also has a great deal to offer. I love it's proximity to everything in Hollywood. Whether it's Starbucks to start the day, Sunday's Farmer's Market or having a few drinks at a local bar or club then strolling home, it's a great, safe neighborhood. Even better, once you step foot inside the Van Ness property's front gate, you are transported to another world -- one of tranquility, beauty and old Hollywood history. It is walking distance to many of Hollywood's great restaurants, night clubs, bars, shopping, theaters and attractions, and a block away from the popular Franklin strip with six great restaurants, coffee shop, wine/cheese market, grocery store, newsstand and an independent theatre.

The best part about getting around in the area is that you can walk to a lot of great places. I love to walk, so I rarely drive anywhere in the neighborhood or Hollywood vicinity, especially since parking can be challenging and/or costly. Close to two Metro subway stops, numerous bus stops, and taxis and Uber cars are easy to get. The 101 and 5 freeways are very convenient and easily get you to anywhere you need to go!

Picture perfect stay in Hollywood

This place was just like the pictures! It was everything I'd hoped for! The backyard pool and spa was tranquil and private. Instructions to turn the pool and spa heater on was easy to follow. The fridge was plenty large for a family planning to eat-in all their meals. Dishwasher and laundry machines were a plus! This place is charming and traditional but updated with all the amenities one would hope to have. Clean and well-kept. On-site private parking was great! I would definitely recommend staying here!

Horrible

There are so many reasons this property is bad I hope I don't forget any.

1. We arrived 20 minutes early and tried to contact the manager. the number sent to us was disconnected. I eventually contacted the owner and was told he would be there at 3pm. A few minutes later he text back and notified us he would be an hour late. He offered to heat the pool for free, not mentioning only for one day, when I brought that up to the manager he got very rude about it.

2. The listing states thing like soup, shampoo and other personal care items are included in the stay. When we arrived they weren't there and we had to contact the manager so he could go buy them.

3. The manager lives in the garage on the property. This was not disclosed. This made my family feel very uncomfortable

4. Theres cameras everywhere so don't expect any privacy especially with the manager living 10 feet from the pool

5. When it rained the light fixture in the laundry room filled with water and leaked all over the floor

6. the mattresses were the cheapest you could buy. nobody had a good nights sleep

7. The driveway is useless. I had to unload my family on the street because the driveway was so narrow you couldn't open the doors for anyone to get out

8. They don't tell you if you park on the street on Tuesday you get a parking ticket

9. we rented the house for the pool and hot tub. We later found out they wanted to charge an extra 45 a day to heat the pool. We paid a lot of money to rent the house. This charge was ridiculous. The hot tub didn't work half the time. When we contacted the manager we were told we were doing it wrong. I followed the directions given.

10. there was ceiling damage in the kitchen from a prior leak. The ceiling was literally hanging down about to fall

11. Heres the best one. RATS. Yes I said rats. They don't trim the palm branches over the roof and the rats climb from the trees to the house. When you turn the lights off you can here them start to move inside the walls. my 10 year old daughter was horrified. Everyone had to sleep with the lights on in the bedrooms so the rodents wouldn't come out to play

Overall this was my first experience with home away and it was horrible. They need to do some kind of quality control on the houses they let on the site. I wouldn't recommend this property to anyone in the future and I hope it is removed from the site

Perfect Stay

We spent 3 nights in this home and had a perfect stay. Visiting our daughter at Emerson College's LA campus -- was a perfect location. Had her and her friends for dinner one night and all hung out by the fire pit outside. The house is clean and in a nice location. Groceries, coffee, all in walking distance from the home.

Great stay during our wedding

We stayed at the Van Ness house for our wedding, and the property is absolutely gorgeous. We highly recommend it for special occasions. There is tons of outdoor seating in both the front and back yard, the pool is awesome, and there is tons and tons of space for entertaining. Everything in the house was in good and working condition. Our only complaint, and it is minor, is that the mattresses were on the soft side (we slept in two different rooms to see if it was one specific bed) and we prefer a more firm mattress.

Disappointed - broken grill/broken hot tub

We are disappointed and frustrated about our recent stay. I have tried contacting the owners Steven and Alfonso and they have not responded. We spent alot of money and were hoping for a stress free vacation, but things kept going wrong. I have asked for a partial refund for all the headaches, but the owners do not care to respond. The grill did not work when we checked in and we were initially told it wouldn't work till the night before we left. We purchased lots of groceries before checking and planned to grill. We feel we should have been notified that it didn't work and it should have been fixed prior to our arrival. I told Jeremy who let us in that was unacceptable and his first response was we could leave and find somewhere else to stay. We booked this home months ago so that was not an option. Also, the hot tub was broken and did not heat. They were unable to fix while we were there. The owner asked if we would mind checking out an hour early if he let us in an hour early. We agreed, however prior to our flight I texted Jeremy who was supposed to let us in and he said ABSOLUTELY NOT, no exceptions. I tried to contact Alfonso and left 3 messages and he never returned my calls. One other thing renters shouuld know is that there is a man that stays in the garage on the property that has been converted to a room so he can see you whenever you are at the pool or outside. We did not like that at all and found it strange and somewhat scary. That should be disclosed. Also, description shows plenty of parking in driveway, yet we were told to park on the street. We ran out of paper towels and had to constantly wash towels and there were not separate pool and bath towels. All in all, while this is a beautiful home, we eould never recommend or return. The owners do NOT CARE or respond.

Owner's Response: Please look at our excellent track record and don’t hesitate to contact us with any questions. We typically would not respond to a negative review but in this case, we feel forced to make an exception. Shari asked if she could check in early and was allowed to do so at no cost. There was a misunderstanding regarding the exact check in time, but that go clarified with one phone call. We did realize the grill was not working properly that day and let her know we were getting a new grill. It would have been there the next day. She said that was unacceptable and that she would not feed her children anything until the grill was fixed. At that point and with that type of response, we did suggest that if not having the grill for one day was a deal breaker, we would give her a full refund. We much rather cut our losses than have an unhappy guest. She said no to a refund and demand the grill be fixed that day. I did pay for the grill to get fixed that day and was all done and working by that evening. The time without the grill was three and a half hours. The main house and the summer cottage are listed as two different listings. Currently there is a property manager on site. There is a fence and dense vegetation that divide both properties. If you read any of our reviews, it is not an issue as they are both private and separate. We, as well as our guest have found it more than help full to have the property manager available for any emergencies. For example, Shari overheated the hut-tub by leaving it on all night. The property manager was able to take care of it immediately. Shari’s unreasonable reaction regarding the grill was a clear indicator of the care she had towards our home. We did not claim any of her deposit, even though her stay required more than a typical cleaning. She allowed her children to remove window screens from the second floor windows and climb out onto the roof of the home. The security company was notified of the incident and it caused minor damage to one of the screens. She also left the hot-tub on all night causing it to overheat. We definitely would have much rather cancelled the reservation than have this lack of respect for our home. It is worth nothing that she personally asked me for money in exchange for a positive review. Like I said our excellent track record speaks for itself and we felt no need to reimburse her for not having a grill for a few hours.

Beautiful historic property in great location.

The Van Ness property was an amazing property - we loved the period features and historic charm. The pool and yard made the property feel secluded even though it is in a convenient location within the city. We would definitely consider returning on a future visit.
