What Can You Expect At Hoopers Island Bayside Haven?

The Bayside Haven is a truly "get away from it all" location, we do not provide internet access nor cable TV. We do have plenty of DVDs and some local & network TV stations. The Haven has AC, and a ceiling fan. Windows on every wall (8 total) for plenty of sunlight and catching a breeze…very comfortable!

If you need to stay connected, you must bring your smart phone and/or patronize either the Hoopers Island General Store (formerly Island Pride) or Old Salty's to use their internet. But really...traveling out here encourages you to unplug for a little while, enjoy the scenery, the wildlife and the simplicity...The sunsets are amazing, you may notice others pulling out their chairs around "sunset" time, as they all admire the views, the ships going by, and the fabulous birds flying by or swimming in the water. We often have our neighbors over and enjoy it together.

Old Salty's is our local (within walking distance) seafood restaurant, where you can meet the locals as well as the folks that drive from various parts of the Eastern Shore to eat here. (Open Wed-Sun)

You may rent kayaks/canoes or go on a charter fishing boat tour, or just a scenic tour, right on the island. The land is flat, perfect for biking or going for a long walk from bridge to bridge.

We have crisp cool 400 count 100% Cotton linens, organic and/or made in the USA when we can find them. We steam clean all soft surfaces (pillows, mattresses, cushions, etc.) between guests, to keep down the allergens and just to offer you a comfortable stay. All bedding is encased in bug proof, allergen free materials. We are picky about where we stay, and apply these standards to our vacation rentals as well.

No Smoking and No Pets

We love to travel and we love hosting people in our home. We strive to offer you a comfy and cozy vacation experience We are self maintained, although we do have a local handyperson on call in Hoopers, because we want to respond quickly to any issues or concerns.

We love meeting new people and providing tourism information tailored to your needs. We try to offer a blend of comfort and simplicity within our decor and in our amenities. We pride ourselves on keeping our properties clean and updated, and are constantly on the look out for ways to improve.

Debi Richter purchased this studio in 2001

Why Debi Richter chose Hoopers Island

We bought the Haven several years ago as a place for our family to get away from it all and enjoy the outdoors. We loved watching our children enjoy the water sports, my son working on his sailboat, and combing the 'beach area' for sea glass, biking and walking around the island.

Our children could roam around the island without a care, as it is a very safe and quiet location. The roads are flat, easy to bike or walk on, and the water is perfect for kayaks or canoes, and not so deep you that need to worry.

In our fast paced lives, we all need a place to just 'be' and for us, Hoopers Island Bayside Haven is just that. We hope you will also enjoy the opportunity to relax and enjoy the scenery.

What makes this studio unique

The ability to watch the sunsets every night, and sunrise when we get up early enough. I can not stress this enough, we never tire of the views, and even if I'm cooking, I take a minute to look outside as the sun goes down.

For me personally, there is nothing better than getting up early, making a cup of tea, grabbing my book and sitting on the front porch on one of the rockers and watching the boats come back in. Bliss!

We also really enjoy having friends over at night and building a fire and of course having some drinks while we relax and catch up.

My 'book club' enjoys all of the antique and thrift shopping within an hour's drive, wine tasting at Layton's Chance Winery and ending the day at Salty's for crab dinners and Hoopers Island Ice Tea. They look forward to the trip every year, the 'club' is growing because of this 'field trip.' We now have added marking off the various "stops" on the Harriet Tubman Trail as part of our annual book club week.

Hoopers Island Bayside Haven in Fishing Creek

  • 5 of 5

Excellent location on the water. Plenty of room in this flat to relax. No worries about kids or loud families disturbing you here. Locals are super friendly. Store nearby for supplies. Also some nice restaurants. Only wish we could have stayed longer. Winding road. Great for bikes, running or walking. Very scenic.

Perfect base for exploring Dorchester County

  • 5 of 5

We brought our bikes over 1000 miles from the mid-west to ride the quiet roads of Dorchester County. Hooper's Island Bayside Haven was the perfect base for our adventure. The apartment was neat and clean, spacious, and had everything we needed. And, it is in one of the most beautiful spots in the world. It is so quiet we could hear the wings of birds as they flew over. As and added benefit we could see about 10 osprey nests fro m the dock across the street. The bike ridinng was superb - low to no traffic, flat roads, peaceful, eagles, osprey, herons, .... I would definitely stay here again and I would recommend it to family and friends. Thanks!

Wonderful spot for Eagleman 70.3 or IMMD

  • 5 of 5

This is a lovely studio apartment. It was very clean, had plenty of room, and is in a beautiful, quiet setting. Perfect sunsets from the back yard. In addition to having all the basics, there were a lot of movies and books to stay occupied on a rainy night. It was a very hot weekend, but the fans and window A/C kept the place cool and comfortable. Note there is no WiFi and my cell signal wasn't very strong inside.

I stayed here for Eagleman 70.3. It's about 40 minutes from Great Marsh Park in Cambridge. It's an easy drive (even early on race morning, just keep an eye out for deer). I really liked being slightly away from all the race chaos. There is a cute general store and Emily's produce/farm store is awesome. It's between the apartment and the race site and has everything you need for healthy pre-race fuel and lots of tasty treats to celebrate after.

Debi was a great hostess - very responsive with questions and provided a lot of information on the area.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the kind words, yes it is unfortunate that the signal is so far away for cell phone reception, although several of us have tried to cajole Verizon to enhance the signals...sigh...usually texts work better inside (for whatever reason?) So glad you found it a quiet respite, that is what we strive for. I love the drive from Hoopers to Cambridge, as it is so different from the normal "daily commute," but you are correct, depending on the time of day you can see all sorts of creatures, hope you were able to spot a Bald Eagle? It is good to hear that the studio stayed cool enough, as it was a brutally hot weekend! Please come back some time for a Getaway with your husband.

Beautiful place on the shore!

  • 5 of 5

The apartment had plenty of room for the three of us, had everything you could possibly need and a few extras that were very thoughtfully left for us. The fire pit was fun at night and star gazing is particularly awesome - so many bright stars! Very relaxing and yet there is plenty to do. We loved kayaking at the blackwater refuge! Amazing wildlife at blackwater and at Hooper's Island. Enjoyed reading about the history of Hooper's Island too. Great weekend!

Beautiful, restful, and homey. Loved it.

  • 5 of 5

Accurate description of location, layout, and amenities. Very homey and it was exactly what we were looking for; restful, quiet, and plenty of available activities (when we wanted something to do). The place was clean and well-maintained with plenty of extra little amenities like soaps and sunscreen. Very responsive owners that provided great customer service. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone that would like a nice private getaway from daily busyness. We enjoyed the national wildlife refuge, as well as Cambridge. We drove down the island and took in the scenery. It was great to use the grill and watch the sunset. Highly recommend this spot!

I booked this place in hopes of having a quiet get-away for my husband, myself and our 9 month old son. I was planning it for an early 1st Father's Day gift for my husband.

I don't even know where to begin on how wonderful everything was! I contacted Debi on a Thursday evening around 11pm and she got back to me that very same evening. And going forward, she always got back to me within 24 hours and provided SO much information. Everything was even better than I had expected, and was already expecting it to be super nice! The place is VERY clean and Debi and Steve really do a great job on welcoming you to their place and making you feel at home. They are very laid back people and really do their best in helping you plan the best getaway for yourself. Debi would send me emails asking for ideas of what we'd be interested in doing so she could help us out. It was great because she knows the area and it made it easier that when we got down there, we already had a list of ideas to do.

The grounds are amazing. You have your own dock across the street (which is not a big street LOL) that you can go fishing and crabbing. My husband and I would have a glass of wine out there in the evening and one morning we had a watched the sun rise (because it's a perfect view for it on the water). In the back you have the bay and a fire pit. That was pretty fun. The views are gorgeous from any window you look out.

It was truly so relaxing and exactly what my husband needed. i highly recommend this to anyone who is looking for a quiet getaway. And you are definitely in good hands with Debi and Steve!!

Don't miss the Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge. only 10 minutes from the Haven, and the NEW Harritet Tubman National Park, right next to the Refuge.

Although we are surrounded by water, there is NO typical beach experience. Swimming in the bay is NOT for everyone, although many do cool off using our floats. The waterways are ideally enjoyed by paddle boarding, kayaking, jet skis, etc.

You can rent kayaks, canoes, bikes, and more or bring your own. It is the best way to enjoy the island waterways and the surrounding areas.

Cambridge is only 25 minutes away and has little boutiques and restaurants, Easton is only 15 minutes further, with even more shops/restaurants/nightlife.
