Walter McDonough purchased this cottage in 1978
This property was originally purchased by Walter McDonough Sr. both to give is family a summer vacation home in Boothbay Harbor and to allow him to pursue his hobby of giant tuna fishing. The property is located in the quintessential village of Bayville, which met his needs of a quite piece of property, close to the Harbor, but far enough away as not to be disturbed by it, with deep water frontage and a dock for his boat.
Bayville was founded as a summer colony on the coast of Maine in the 1880's. Many of the current cottages are owned by the descendants of those who first summered here.
The village of Bayville is one of 5 incorporated villages in the state of Maine and currently has about 50 homes, almost all are summer cottages. It also has a community tennis court, dock, beach, post office with lending library, and community house. All are within walking distance of the cottage.
The cottage has beautiful views, and is located on Linekin Bay., which is one of the best sailing and boating areas in the Region. The cottage has a dock for swimming, kayaking, boating, sunbathing etc. There is also a table at the end of the dock for eating, reading, etc.
The cottage is located in Bayville and is less than 3 miles from both the town of Boothbay Harbor, with its fine restaurants, shopping, boat trips etc, and the Boothbay Harbor Country Club with its challenging 18 hole golf course, fine dinning room and driving range.
There is a hiking trail that runs through the property that can be used to either get to Boothbay Harbor or East Boothbay with it restaurants, and general store (The East Boothbay General Store has fabulous homemade baked goods.)
The village of Bayville also has a community tennis court (which is free and only requires uses to sign up in advance to play.)
We had a great week at Holly Pines cottage. It was very close to Boothbay Harbor and East Boothbay and a good location for other places that we wanted to visit. There was a Hannafords grocery store a few minutes drive away along with several other stores. The cottage itself was comfortable and had everything that we needed. Our kids wanted to sleep in bunk beds and so they slept downstairs and used the bathroom there and we used one of the upstairs bedrooms and the bathroom, so everyone had lots of space. We loved the view from the deck as well as the dock that went right out over the bay, which was very peaceful and a great spot for fishing. We enjoyed the ospreys that were flying around and various other seabirds as well as the occasional harbor seal. The cottage's owners were in the house next door; far enough away to feel that we had our privacy but close enough if we had questions or needed anything. All in all, it was a great week and I would recommend this cottage to anyone.
My family and I stayed here for 1 week. I brought my parents along for a much needed vacation. Our kids ages 5 and 6 really enjoyed playing on the dock, collecting rocks on the shore and going fishing. We rented a canoe from a local company and brought a paddleboard with us for our stay. We were able to go out to a nice little island and have lunch on two of the days. We saw seals and many different types of birds during our stay. The home is well equipped and had games for children to play with. The owners were very helpful and kind and answered many questions we had about the area. We had such a great time here and wish we could have stayed longer!
The week at camp started off a little rainy, but quickly turned wonderful for my wife and I, our son and daughter-in-law and grandson. Walter was pleasant to talk with, and a great area historian. The camp was very well equipped and when we asked if there was an umbrella for out on the dock, Walter found one and helped me set it up. The camp is centrally located to all the places we wanted to visit, and easy for others to locate and visit. The camp was very rustic, but clean, and bug free (very important to us). Dealing with Walter and VRBO was very easy and pleasant, right down to the quick refund of our complete deposit. All and all, it was a great vacation for our family.
The house has a fantastic location surrounded by woods, very quiet and peaceful with an amazing view of the bay. It's super close to downtown Boothbay, restaurants, and tons of things to do and see! The McDonough family were very helpful answering all our questions about Boothbay and more than generous in allowing us to use their fishing gear and kayak. We highly recommend this cottage, our over all experience was wonderful. We will definitely be renting this cottage again if we are able to make it to Boothbay again. (Hoping we will be able to make it there).
Traveled with our adult children for their 1st trip to Maine. All LOVED the cabin on Linekin Bay. Great location; quick drive to a grocery store and BoothBay Harbor restaurants. Cabin kitchen was small but stocked with everything we needed. Full access to gas grill on the deck where we cooked our own dinner a couple of nights and ate outside. Bought whole lobster and steamer clams at a coop in town. They cooked them and we brought them back to the cabin, spread out newspaper on the picnic table on the dock and ate our fill! Cabin is technically located in East Boothbay which is wooded and a great area to go for a walk to the little old Post Office or town dock. We called the kayak company and they delivered 2 kayaks that the 4 of us shared for 3 days. Water was very calm and great for exploring Linekin bay! Called the owners in advance to ask if they provided beach towels and a hair dryer, both were brought over and waiting for us! They had the bottom bunk in both downstairs rooms made up so my boys didn't have to share a room. The view here was beautiful. My husband and I had been to Bar Harbor before and loved it, but there was a lot more variety of things to do in this area; putt putt, breweries, quilt shops, lobster shacks, kayaking, hiking etc. I did have a snafoo with the VRBO website but Walter and I got through it! Very memorable vacation!
Charming historical cottage right on the bay. Views are amazing! Peaceful and relaxing. So much better than staying at a hotel. Caught some fish off the docks. It's my kind of place.
Boothbay Harbor is one of the premiere tourist centers in the state of Maine, with many restaurants, boat trips, kayaking adventures hiking trails and sightseeing activities on the beautiful Maine coast. There is nothing like a lobster dinner on the Maine coast, a boat ride on this beautiful rocky coast or a trip to the Costal Maine Botanical Gardens.
