About Walter McDonough

We are a retired Banker and a retired Middle School Teacher from Massachusetts. We live in Maine in the summer and SW Florida during the winter

Walter McDonough purchased this cottage in 1978

Why Walter McDonough chose Boothbay Harbor Area

This property was originally purchased by Walter McDonough Sr. both to give is family a summer vacation home in Boothbay Harbor and to allow him to pursue his hobby of giant tuna fishing. The property is located in the quintessential village of Bayville, which met his needs of a quite piece of property, close to the Harbor, but far enough away as not to be disturbed by it, with deep water frontage and a dock for his boat.

Bayville was founded as a summer colony on the coast of Maine in the 1880's. Many of the current cottages are owned by the descendants of those who first summered here.

The village of Bayville is one of 5 incorporated villages in the state of Maine and currently has about 50 homes, almost all are summer cottages. It also has a community tennis court, dock, beach, post office with lending library, and community house. All are within walking distance of the cottage.

What makes this cottage unique

The cottage has beautiful views, and is located on Linekin Bay., which is one of the best sailing and boating areas in the Region. The cottage has a dock for swimming, kayaking, boating, sunbathing etc. There is also a table at the end of the dock for eating, reading, etc.

The cottage is located in Bayville and is less than 3 miles from both the town of Boothbay Harbor, with its fine restaurants, shopping, boat trips etc, and the Boothbay Harbor Country Club with its challenging 18 hole golf course, fine dinning room and driving range.

There is a hiking trail that runs through the property that can be used to either get to Boothbay Harbor or East Boothbay with it restaurants, and general store (The East Boothbay General Store has fabulous homemade baked goods.)

The village of Bayville also has a community tennis court (which is free and only requires uses to sign up in advance to play.)

Great vacation!

  • 5 of 5

My family and I stayed here for 1 week. I brought my parents along for a much needed vacation. Our kids ages 5 and 6 really enjoyed playing on the dock, collecting rocks on the shore and going fishing. We rented a canoe from a local company and brought a paddleboard with us for our stay. We were able to go out to a nice little island and have lunch on two of the days. We saw seals and many different types of birds during our stay. The home is well equipped and had games for children to play with. The owners were very helpful and kind and answered many questions we had about the area. We had such a great time here and wish we could have stayed longer!

Enjoyable vacation in Boothbay Harbor

  • 4 of 5

The week at camp started off a little rainy, but quickly turned wonderful for my wife and I, our son and daughter-in-law and grandson. Walter was pleasant to talk with, and a great area historian. The camp was very well equipped and when we asked if there was an umbrella for out on the dock, Walter found one and helped me set it up. The camp is centrally located to all the places we wanted to visit, and easy for others to locate and visit. The camp was very rustic, but clean, and bug free (very important to us). Dealing with Walter and VRBO was very easy and pleasant, right down to the quick refund of our complete deposit. All and all, it was a great vacation for our family.

Amazing views!!!!

  • 5 of 5

The house has a fantastic location surrounded by woods, very quiet and peaceful with an amazing view of the bay. It's super close to downtown Boothbay, restaurants, and tons of things to do and see! The McDonough family were very helpful answering all our questions about Boothbay and more than generous in allowing us to use their fishing gear and kayak. We highly recommend this cottage, our over all experience was wonderful. We will definitely be renting this cottage again if we are able to make it to Boothbay again. (Hoping we will be able to make it there).

Beautiful location on Linekin Bay!

  • 4 of 5

Traveled with our adult children for their 1st trip to Maine. All LOVED the cabin on Linekin Bay. Great location; quick drive to a grocery store and BoothBay Harbor restaurants. Cabin kitchen was small but stocked with everything we needed. Full access to gas grill on the deck where we cooked our own dinner a couple of nights and ate outside. Bought whole lobster and steamer clams at a coop in town. They cooked them and we brought them back to the cabin, spread out newspaper on the picnic table on the dock and ate our fill! Cabin is technically located in East Boothbay which is wooded and a great area to go for a walk to the little old Post Office or town dock. We called the kayak company and they delivered 2 kayaks that the 4 of us shared for 3 days. Water was very calm and great for exploring Linekin bay! Called the owners in advance to ask if they provided beach towels and a hair dryer, both were brought over and waiting for us! They had the bottom bunk in both downstairs rooms made up so my boys didn't have to share a room. The view here was beautiful. My husband and I had been to Bar Harbor before and loved it, but there was a lot more variety of things to do in this area; putt putt, breweries, quilt shops, lobster shacks, kayaking, hiking etc. I did have a snafoo with the VRBO website but Walter and I got through it! Very memorable vacation!

Perfect location for a quiet retreat

  • 4 of 5

Charming historical cottage right on the bay. Views are amazing! Peaceful and relaxing. So much better than staying at a hotel. Caught some fish off the docks. It's my kind of place.

nice location, some concerns

  • 3 of 5

our stay was fine, it's a quiet place in the woods on the shore, and they let us use their pool which was unexpected. nice people.

but then a couple of weeks later something strange happened. the owners waited 2 weeks after we left (conspicuously the day after I left a positive review here) to inform us that they were withholding half of our deposit. they quickly reversed course when I stood up to them, but just beware. they claimed the place needed extra cleaning, but they could offer no examples to illustrate the claim. funnily enough we went out of our way to leave the place in good shape (starting laundry, dishwasher, stripping the beds, etc).

note they charge for linens (!), and they wanted to charge us for using more linens than they thought we would use. bizarre.

the house is old and musty and dark and the inside temperature is quite a bit cooler than the outside. also the owners live in the house next door which is high overlooking the rental, so you feel a little like they're looking down at you at all times.

also the cupboard is completely bare, so bring your own oil, vinegar, spices, everything.

make sure you read and follow the rules, and you might want to do a walkthrough with the owners before you leave, so that they don't try to ding you on the deposit like they did us.

Owner's Response: Before we begin the 2015 summer rental season, we thought we should address some of the issues raised in the review of our cottage by Mr. Joshua C. First: We actually thought that he and his family had a good visit in the cottage. As he correctly points out, we live next door and up the hill from this property. (We do not, however, spy down on our renters We highly respect their right to privacy and the only area that we can clearly see from our house is the pool area which is not included in the rental of the cottage property.) Note: We did let them use our pool when we were not using it because we thought their child would have fun there on warm days. Second: We do not charge for linens. Our expectations were that since there were only 2 adults and 1 small child there would only be two or three beds used. When Joshua’s family left we found an overabundance of soiled linens and we had too little time to launder them for our incoming renters. Third: Their household trash was still in the barrels and wastebaskets inside the house at the end of their rental period. The trash for the property is picked up twice a week. We showed them where to place the bagged trash outside and we reviewed the pickup schedule with them. There was also a misunderstanding in terms of recycling. Within the house we have posted information regarding the recycling policies. These rules are mandated by the state of Maine. When they left we had to go through and wash bottles, separate items, and (at our expense) request an additional trash pickup. Fourth: Our cleaners do not give us a bill. They tell us how many hours they worked and we pay them accordingly. After this rental, they said they required additional manpower, and called in another person to clean the cottage. When I asked our renter to share in the extra expense, he refused, saying in effect, If you can’t show me the bill, we won’t pay it. Since we could not, we refunded his entire damage deposit. Finally, this rental property has been in our family since 1948. The houses are only used in the summer and do not have central heat. There are however, space heaters in the rental cottage for those occasional cool Maine mornings or evenings. We truly love sharing our piece of the beautiful state of Maine with those from afar (and often those from only an hour or two away!). We strive to have all renters experience “The Way Life Should Be”. We are looking forward to a wonderful 2015 season!
