About Mark

Lori & I have been coming up to St. Ignace for twenty two years. Being professional photographers we loved the scenery and fell in love with the people. After ten years of looking for our own little piece of heaven we stumbled upon The Love Shack.

Mark purchased this cottage in 2008

Why Mark chose Upper Peninsula Michigan

The location of the love shack is perfect. When we bought the home it had been vacant for many years. Noone saw what we saw. We have redone almost everything but as we all know the work of an older home keeps us jumping. It is close to town and all the happenings. The views are wonderful and with 4 children in our family the playground is right down the street.

Not the Ritz but charming.

  • 5 of 5

St. Ignace is a beautiful waterside town with great food, views, and relaxing times. The Love Shack is located in walking distance to everything and has a character all its own. My family enjoyed our stay and the property was just as described in the listing.

Owner's Response: Thank you and we are so happy you enjoyed yourself. I love your analogy that it's not the ritz but charming. The house is quirky but the old adage in St Ignace is that they decide where to build their house by "throwing a rock over their shoulder." That's what is was a hundred years ago and I am not sure it has gotten any more sophisticated since;)

Not bad.

  • 3 of 5

Was visiting for a wedding, not a vacation so was ok for what we came for. Older home. Only one bathroom, so probably wouldn't plan to fill the 5 bedrooms with people. Cute sunroom. Not on the beach, but close to town. No wifi. Owner seemed great and was on top of communication. Honestly won't use again, will find a place on West side of Michigan for vacations or somewhere directly on the water.

Comfortable.

  • 4 of 5

The initial picture as shown here indicates the best beach in the world - sloping and great for the little ones.

Led me to believe this was a part of the view we saw from the cottage.

It is not. There are very small beaches near and most of them quite rocky. You need to leave your shoes on to even walk into the water.

The house does have very uneven floors but after the first day we didn't even notice.

The best part of the vacation were the people in the town. They are incredibly friendly. We enjoyed the small town immensely.

The Indian Museum and exhibition was amazing.

Since the beach was a large part of what we wanted to do; and in this case required planning, we would pick another location next time..

However, we had a very relaxing, good time. Maybe not what we had thought; but maybe what we needed.

Called Mark with a question about wifi (there is none), and he was very quick to respond.

The house was clean and comfortable and the kids did enjoy the yard.

Michigan is beautiful and welcoming.

Owner's Response: Thank you for staying with us. I hope you had a chance to go to dunes beach (the one in the photo) it is a 15 minute drive but well worth it.

Wasps stink, and lack of heat

  • 2 of 5

House was as pictured in the ad, but it's what you don't see that makes difference between happy stay and can't wait to leave stay.

The house provided a good location and the ability to cook meals while vacationing. However, when we walked in the house smelled like mold and wet basement. The smell was on the sheets, pillowcases, towels and couches. It stuck to our clothing when we left the house. The house was very old and had a heater in the kitchen and fireplace in the living room. This heat was not enough to provide warmth upstairs so we could not use any of the upstairs bedrooms. We had to move mattresses downstairs and put them on the floor to sleep. None of the doors closed or locked. Not good for a house that sleeps 9. During our 3 night stay we encountered 5 wasps.

Owner's Response: I am so sorry you didn't enjoy your stay. When you wrote you were only concerned about wifi. Both furnaces in the house could heat the entire house on their own. I would of sent someone if you didn't know how to use the thermostat. The cottage is over a hundred years old and not for everybody. I would of gladly refunded your money if you would have told me as soon as you got there. Thank you for letting me know what your concerns are and I will make a trip up to validate and address them. Sincerely, Mark

A great rustic cabin

  • 4 of 5

Positive: Location, shopping, parks, neighborhood, quick responses from Mark (owner) whenever I had questions, clean interior, very comfortable lodging, a nice fire pit with seating all around, washer and dryer in good condition, ample supply of hot water, park within walking distance

Negative: There was only a partial roll of toilet paper and three kitchen trash bags - definitely needed more for an extended stay. Really not an issue as the store is only a few blocks away. There was a spider infestation on the exterior of house by the fire pit. Grass needed to be mowed.

We were satisfied with the lodging and had a great time in this old house. It is definitely rustic - floors are not level... but it was clean inside and is much better than a tent or RV when there is a family reunion. We would definitely stay again.

Great location and Great customer service.

  • 4 of 5

The property was very clean and the owner has amazing customer service. He answered all my emails and questions with in 15 minutes of me emailing him and was very nice. The location of the house was really nice. We had 4 small children under the age of 8 staying with us and we loved that the park was less then 5 minutes from the house and the walk to a pier was less then 5 minutes also. Lots of great restaurants near by. The house had its charm but needs some work. Floors were unlevel. Loved the balcony that overlooked the park and pier.
