Whether it's your base for exploring the ruins of Cathar Castles, walking through beautiful nature, strolling the battlements of the medieval La Cité of Carcassonne, cruising along the Canal du Midi on a barge or sampling the beautiful wines of the region – the Cathar Cottage is your perfect home away from home!
The Cottage is located in the village of Pennautier which is found 5 minutes drive North of beautiful Carcassonne. Pennautier has been known as such since 1781, however its history wends it's way back through the Middle Ages and Roman Occupation into pre-history.
The Cathar Cottage is an attached village house on 3 floors. The ground floor consists of the entrance, kitchen and dining area, along with a full bathroom. The first floor comprises the Master Bedroom, Sitting Room, Terrace and second toilet. The second bedroom is contained on the second floor - please note there are fairly steep steps to the second floor which would not be suitable for older persons or very young children. The Cottage has free Wi-Fi.
Pennautier has all the basic services within walking distance, including a newsagent, grocery store, bakeries, butcher, cafe, pizza restaurant, pharmacy, and doctor. The Chateau de Pennautier is on the edge of the village (2 min walk from the Cottage) and dates back to 1620 - a wonderful place to engage in a bit of 'wine tourism'!. Parking is available within meters of the house.

The experience of holidaying in a genuine functioning French village in a cottage full of character. The ability to walk up the street and shop for fresh croissants, baguettes, jambon and fromage to construct your own beautiful picnics. And of course walking 2 minutes through the village at night to visit the lovely restaurant of the Chateau De Pennautier to enjoy a lovely meal and sip a range of the excellent wines that are a product of the Chateau winery.
Let me start by saying that I have stayed in approximately 35 vacation rental properties in the last 10 years in the USA, Spain, Portugal, France and the UK. To paraphrase Forrest Gump, apartment rentals "are like a box of chocolates, you never know what you are going to get." There are often surprises some good, and some not so good. This one had a lot of good surprise. First, it has a wonderful shower; good water pressure, ample room, and that most welcome of bathroom amenities for Americans, a shower curtain to keep the water in the shower. It also has the absolute BEST laundry equipment in any rental that I have ever seen. The equipment was easy to use and the dryer was a real dryer, not a wire rack. The Cathar Cottage is very roomy. My wife and I traveled alone but if you have a couple of kids (age 6 and up) they would absolutely love this place. It has an third level for the kids to sleep in that kids will love. Pennautier is a very small village but it is a short drive to Carcassonne. There are also great day trips you can make such as Minerve and Lastours. Lastours is a super place to see and only about 30 minutes away. You can hike up to 4 sets of castle ruins and it isn't that strenuous a hike (or I wouldn't have done it). Great views of the countryside. If you drive in this village I suggest that you do not drive your car down the street that the apartment is on. The bottom of the street narrows drastically. Just park on the main street above the apartment and wheel your luggage down the hill about 50 meters. Hey, nothing's perfect. Making the arrangements was very easy and the owners were super nice and prompt with all communication. I would highly recommend this apartment.
Close to major sites like Carcassonne and the beach at Narbonne. Loved walking to the bakery every morning for our baguette and croissants! Worked well for family of four. The stairs to the upstairs bedroom were very steep so probably not suitable for very young children. Loved the stone walls and the character of the home!
We rented the cottage for 6 days with our daughter in April, and we've just LOVED it. It is clean, quiet with everything we need. A large bathroom at the first floor and a wc with a sink at the second floor were well appreciated. The village is quiet and secure, with all the accommodations, and the people are very kind and helpful. The owners answer rapidly and efficiently to our demand and welcome us with a bottle of the local wine (which was appreciated after a long travelling day). What is written in the description is what you get and more. We highly recommend this location.
We thoroughly enjoyed our time in the cottage and our travels through the surrounding Languedoc countryside and villages. The cottage was great. Its in a quiet lane, has all the mod-cons (except a TV) and was within a 5 minute walk of a bakery, a butcher and a mini-mart. We rented a small car (at the Carcassonne railway station) so we could get around the region easily. The cottage was in easy reach of Carcassonne (10 minutes) and Toulouse (1 hr), but also places that had very engaging places of interest including Albi, Foix (cave paintings), Arles, Mirepoix, Fanjeaux and many quaint French country villages. Highly recommend Cathar Cottage for a couple of days or a couple of weeks.
My husband and I spent two wonderful weeks in Cathar Cottage in Pennautier, France. The experience of living in a little village in France was delightful, especially if you are interested in the history of the area. This is the part of France where the Cathars (Christian heretics) were victims of the first Papal Inquisition in the early 13th century. We biked and hiked along the Canal du Midi and climbed numerous mountains to reach the Cathar castles at the top. We visited numerous medieval villages in the region and drove into the Pyrenees Mountains to marvel at the views.
The cottage was fully equipped for our visit, just as it was described in the VRBO listing. The little lane where the house is located was charming. Some of the houses had dates carved above their doors, dating back into the 1600's. There is a winery in Pennautier, so we were totally enjoying the local wines during our entire visit. The local restaurant and little shops in the village were delightful and very friendly, especially helpful when our French challenged our ability to clearly order what we wanted.
Overall, our experience with this VRBO rental was excellent. If we had the time, we would go back to Pennautier for another visit and more time in the Cathar Cottage.
