My family and I loved the cottage and would stay again!

  • 5 of 5

The cottage was perfect for us! Was spacious enough to have our own space yet also be together as a family too! The log fire was perfect for this time of year! The amenities in the village were sufficient! We didn’t use our cars at all for the entire stay which made a nice change!

Thank you for letting us hire the cottage and expect us again in the summer so we can enjoy the BBQ and some nice walks

Excellent property in a fine semi-rural location. Owners very helpful. Recommended for all ages.

  • 5 of 5

Stayed here on a family weekend break: 5 adults & 3 children. The owners met us at the property, and were very helpful regarding the local amenities & the cottage itself. A complementary bottle of wine, bread, milk and marmalade, together with a ready-to-light log fire, made us feel welcome. All rooms were spotlessly clean, with a well-equipped kitchen, and plenty of towels in the modern bathrooms. Central heating was easy to operate and very efficient. A tidy little garden is safely fenced off from the adjacent river, with a pleasant view, although I cannot guarantee a glimpse of the kingfisher which I saw skimming along there on Saturday morning. There are plenty of local shops in the village, along with two fine pubs - the Sunday roast in the 'Royal Oak' was a generous offering of delicious food, and not expensive. There are a host of attractions in the vicinity, to suit all ages. Altogether we had a most enjoyable time, and we are looking forward to a return visit next spring.

Great property, beautiful location but with a surprise relating to access to the property.

  • 4 of 5

This was a good choice for us and we're happy to leave a good review.

The owner met us at the property and provided a welcome pack which included milk, bread and wine.

The house is clean and well equipped. Cutlery, crockery and glasses are all sets (not the mismatched oddities we've experienced in other places) and there is a modern cooker available in the sizable kitchen.

The bathroom is large and has a separate shower and all three upstairs bedrooms look out onto the yard and the weir.

There is use of a barbecue and a picnic table is in the grounds of the property. No barbecue weather was available when we stayed but I imagine it would be great for that purpose.

There is a driveway which shields you from any traffic noise and you can park your vehicle on the property itself.

There is only one negative that I would mention and that is the existence of a right-of-way across the driveway of the property itself. At the end of the driveway lies this property and one other. The other property has access to the road by crossing your rental property (either on foot or with their vehicle) and to do this they walk right by your windows. It feels like someone walking or driving across your front garden. It is quite surprising and I thought it needed mentioning because we were unaware and unprepared for its existence. Had we known we weren't going to get complete privacy we may have chose something else.

It wasn't a problem but I think it should be mentioned by the owner in the description because it may be an issue to others.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review, we are glad you enjoyed your stay. Just to address the comments you have made regarding the right of way - the cottage is very old and dates from a time before cars and planning regulations existed, and such arrangements are quite common in cottages of this age. However, we accept the criticism and will update the listing information accordingly. I do hope it did not detract from your enjoyment of the property and we would very much like to welcome you back to The Old Forge at some point in the future.

Wonderful place to stay!

  • 5 of 5

We had the best time. The home was very comfortable and in the best location. The view from the kitchen table is so serene. If you have never been to Great Ayton before you are in for a treat. The village is at the end of the home's driveway. The people are so friendly and you are within walking distance of the co-op and the Royal Oak Inn. The food and pub make it a great place to eat.
