Mike and Vika Hansen moved here 19 years ago with a dream of having a little Kona coffee and Cacao orchards and some vacation homes. finally the dream has become reality, we are growing coffee, cacao, fruits and veggies, raising chickens, planting landscaping, working hard...
Viktoriya purchased this Cottage in 1999
Why Viktoriya chose Captain Cook
We loved the climate, the privacy and the area. Fresh produce year around, beautiful climate to grow food! And The best snorkel and diving. Local crafts and arts.

Wonderful Hosts. Wonderful Views.
My girlfriend and I stayed at this property for 7 days in May. Checking in was easy (make sure you follow the instructions on how to access the property from the driveway) and the drive to the actual unit had great views.
The hosts were really great. Both are very nice and very responsive. They took us on a tour of the property (which is huge) and showed us the many different things they grow on the farm, how they process it and the different steps involved. They made sure to show us where the fresh fruits were and how to pick them whenever we wanted. We also came home one evening to a bunch of fresh bananas picked and waiting for us at our front door.
The unit itself was exactly what it looks like in the pictures. I would say the only thing to be aware of is that this is on a farm and the unit is tucked away next to many trees. This gives it privacy and a nice feeling of being secluded but also there are going to be some bugs around. All the open areas are screened in, so it's not like you're going to be swarmed by bugs or anything like that, but the occasional moth might find it's way in, a gecko or two might be crawling on the walls (with very cool coloration) and a bug or two might crawl on the floor. This is the reality of island life, especially on a farm and being nestled into trees and plants.
Speaking of plants, they have a huge variety of beautiful different plants and flowers. My skin especially appreciated the alloe vera plant growing right outside of the unit after a long day at the beach in the sun.
I know the hosts have some exciting plans for the future as well on how to continue to deliver a great experience for people that travel and stay with them. You really get the sense that they love what they're doing and want to share that with everyone who comes to visit.
Very special place
A cottage in a coffee farm. Great views and lush gardens. Host Vika is superb freidly. She would show you her farm upon request. She has an amazing property. A lot of work but you can see they love it and we love it as well.
It was fun ti hike around the fields and show you our farms...
You are welcome back anytime!
Private, quiet--perfect for us
This cottage is in the hills above the water at Captain Cook. Victoriya and Mike have only a very few cottages that are on the mountainside above their own home. After showing us in and providing us with fresh local fruit, coffee and a bit of information, they left us alone to enjoy our stay--just what we were hoping for. The cottage is near the best snorkeling on the Big Island, parks to explore and some of the most delicious coffee you'll ever taste. If you are looking for a quiet place to relax away from--but within driving distance of--the tourist center, this is the best place possible.
Beautiful property, nice house, slept terrible
Loved the house, clean, nice view, and secluded, close to captain cook, but the bed was hard as a rock and the pillows were terrible. A new mattress or a mattress topper and some nice new pillows would make all the difference. Would most definetly return if that was fixed! Bring ear plugs if you don’t want the rooster to wake you.
So sorry to hear you didn't like the bed! it is a brand NEW Serta mattress! many guests like a firm bed, It HAS a mattress topper, and the pillows are new also! Can't please everybody! you must like those softer beds, obviously, oh, and Roosters are a part of life in Hawaii countryside, I guess a condo in town might have better suited you! Aloha!
We had an amazing stay at the HM Cottage! Quaint cozy cottage in an active cocoa farm. Vika was the most gracious host. Greeting us with a basket of fruit from her own farm and working around our packed schedule to take us on a tour around the grounds. She gave us wonderful local recommendations and suggestions. The only complaint we have is that we had a couple of cold showers due to the lack of warm water. Would give 5 stars otherwise!
Cottage is located in midst of a working Kona Coffee and Cacao Farm (chocolate). See the steps of the process, see the coffee and the chocolate growing on the trees!
