Piney River, a Relaxing Blue Ridge Mountain Waterfront Retreat

Overview

About the property

Cottage, 5 Bedrooms, 3 Baths, (Sleeps 8) Privet, water front property.

On the bank of the Piney River, Sycamore Shade is a great place to relax on the deck or hammock. Native brook trout and wild brown trout populate the river. There are fishing tackle, snorkel masks and inner tubes for enjoying the river. The house is nestled between the Cardinal and the Little Priest mountains in the Blue Ridge Religious Range. The George Washington National Forest adjoins the property.

Excursions can include hiking the nearby Appalachian Trail, four-wheeling up the Shoe Creek jeep trail, or mountain- biking the gravel roads that follow the river. Wintergreen ski resort is a 25 minute drive away. There are numerous wineries, breweries and orchards nearby, and to check for festivals and tastings at these go to The Nelson County visitor’s website.

The trilliums laurel and jack-in-the-pulpits bloom in spring. Summer is just fun because the water is warm enough (but still mountain spring fed cool) to tube or swim. Fall is spectacular because the trees are ablaze with autumn color, and the brookies can be seen spawning from the deck. Watching a movie from the extensive library of DVDs with a fire going in the woodstove is the way to relax in winter after an afternoon of skiing at Wintergreen.

It is always about 10 degrees cooler at Sycamore Shade than it is in the city, and the river makes a tranquil sound splashing over the rocks any time of year. Regardless of the season, when you pull into the driveway at Sycamore Shade, you will decompress and feel the peace and calm that that this home by a running stream always produces.

Beautifully peaceful

  • 5 of 5

My husband , myself, our three 15 year olds, and three of their friends had an absolutely wonderful time. I was a bit nervous being totally unplugged with six teens but within minutes of arriving the kids were off exploring! The house quickly became our home for the week. The sounds of the river and the fresh crisp air of the mountains and surrounding forrest were a delightful escape from our busy lives. We all loved exploring the river, we spent our Independence Day in a near by swimming hole, with slippery rocks, waterfalls, and some rapids for our tubes. We did take the 2 hour drive to Richmond for whitewater rafting, and the 3 hr. Drive to Williamsburg for Busch Gardens. Other than that we found plenty to do along and around the Piney River.

If you are looking for a place to relax and enjoy nature this is the spot. I look forward to coming back with my girlfriends so I can enjoy the local wine trails and local festivals.

Thank you Cabell for use of your beautiful mountain retreat!

Peaceful Retreat

  • 4 of 5

Pros:

Beautiful, peaceful setting.

Plenty of bedrooms for a large family or group.

Decent kitchen (Like most VRBOs, the only thing missing was a colander!)

Nice large deck with dining table and chairs.

Hammock next to river - lovely.

Near by orchard was great - we made a nice dinner on grill with meat and peaches from orchard, and enjoyed eating it on the deck.

Owner very helpful and responsive to emails.

Cons:

House smelled very musty and smokey when we first arrived. Got a bit better after running a/c for awhile, but smokey, musty smelled never went away. Garage especially stayed very musty. We opened windows when it was cool enough and not raining, but that didn't help much. The sheets in our bedroom (over garage) also smelled musty. Being next to a river, more de-humidifiers would have been helpful. (Based on other reviews, most people did not find the odor bothersome.)

Cushions to outdoor furniture were in locked shed. The shed looked like it was dusty inside so we didn't bother trying to locate the key.

As expected, it's a long drive to a grocery store.

Fortunately we didn't need to cancel, but I found it odd that one would receive a larger refund for cancelling CLOSER to the rental date. (20 or more days prior to Occupancy: 50% Refund

Within 20 days prior to Occupancy: 75% Refund)

Family escape!

  • 5 of 5

We live on the coast and enjoy getting some mountain time! We came up with our 12 year old son and his buddy. We were ALL in heaven! So much for the kids to do, both outdoors and indoors! Parents relaxed and loved the gorgeous setting! Great house with lots of room, incredible kitchen, deck, plenty of entertainment. We almost wished for rain as the house has hundreds of movies! We hiked crab tree falls which is very close. I've also been here for girls weekends and it is perfect! This place is a gem. Owners very nice! Clean, fully appointed and so beautiful!

Great Place, Better & Nicer Every Year!!

  • 5 of 5

Our group of old friends has vacationed at this house for the past 3 years, and it just keeps getting better every year!

This is an incredible get away spot right next to the George Washington National Forest in a very beautiful part of rural Virginia.

The large deck is perfect for our gathering of 10 people, with the pristine river running right through the yard. Very Private & Quiet. The owners have decorated the cottage with great taste & style and have included everything you could need. A recently renovated gormet kitchen and beautiful new hardwood floors are a classy addition.

This place is always super clean, cozy and everything works perfectly. Everything is just as described by the very nice owner. You can't go wrong with renting Sycamore Shade for your next get away. We can't wait to return next year!!

There is no place in the state of Virginia prettier than the Piney River! The house and it's amenities are outstanding. A beautiful relaxing deck and plenty of cool shade. The house is extremely comfortable and well furnished along with the linens and towels furnished,a very nice touch. The owner Cabell is just a sweetheart to deal with, just a genuinely nice person. This is a place my family and I will return to many times in the future.

Perfect Weekend

  • 5 of 5

My son Graduated from Liberty University Mothers day weekend. We enjoyed the home and the Piney river. We meet some great local residents. I highly recommend going to the hardware store on 151 for lunch or dinner. The food was great and the people were wonderfull. Friday night we went to a local auction in Amhurst and had a great time. We caught trout, rode bikes, played games and watched movies. We built a fire at night. The weekend was perfect. Oh... we also went to a graduation!
