About the property

Cozy Secluded Log Cabin Tucked Under Towering Cliffs Flanked By Massive Boulders

Nestled under the sandstone bluffs that nature carved out of Rocky Hollow, things are quiet, easy going, and perfect for your holiday away from it all. Here lies Big Rock Log Cabin tucked away in the Kentucky mountains yet only minutes away from Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest. After a day of fishing, hiking, or rock climbing, Big Rock is a wonderful place to come home to. Relax on a large covered porch complete with comfortable lounge chairs and table. Come ready to grill out on the porch at the gas grill and eat out under the trees at a picnic table nestled up in Big Rock Hollow. Big Rock Log Cabin beckons you to slow down, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, all in the comfort of a cozy & well furnished log cabin, or lean back in a lounge chair inside Big Rock’s own rock shelter. Big Rock Cabin is fully furnished with new furniture and antiques, creating a cozy, comfortable feeling. All linens, blankets and towels are furnished so all you need to bring are food, drink, and personal items. Central air and heat will keep you comfortable any time of the year. Big Rock Cabin has a bath and a half plus a Jacuzzi. Do you like to cook? We just finished the new galley style kitchen that is fully furnished with refrigerator, electric stove, dish washer, microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and all the utensils you need for cooking, eating, and drinking. Don’t want to cook? During the season Big Rock is only 5 minutes away from great pizza, subs, or a full buffet dinner. That’s the nice thing about Big Rock, it’s close to everything, but when you top the ridge and drive down into Rocky Hollow you are suddenly away from it all. Natural Bridge State Park is only 5 minute drive where you can enjoy hiking trails, swimming pool, fishing lake, or dinner in the resort lodge. Five minutes more and you are in the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest with it’s forest and mountain trails leading to huge natural stone arches and fantastic views of cliff lined valleys. You can even enjoy the trails with your dog in the National Forest. This is a wonderful, undiscovered part of nature where you will see breath taking views without hoards of people. There isn’t a stop light for 20 miles. Come to the Kentucky Mountains and stay at Big Rock Log Cabin. This is a family cabin and not for parties so no spring breakers please.

About John Glover

Originally an archaeologist but for many years I have dealt in antiquarian books and historic documents with my bookstore Glover's Bookery. I live in downtown Lexington, KY but am a nut for the great outdoors, thus Big Rock was born [my life saver].

John Glover purchased this cabin in 2005

Why John Glover chose Natural Bridge

Big Rock is only a hour from Lexington yet located in the most beautiful deep woods natural area in Kentucky surrounded by cliffy wilderness. I bought Big Rock specifically because it is a Log cabin (a must), was unfinished (so I could finish the inside like I wanted), is under the cliff (my golden retrievers don't know what a cliff edge is), the property has interesting features (massive block boulders, a rock house, and gorilla rock), and lastly is close to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge (Natural Bridge State Park shares a back property line with Big Rock). Fell head over heels for it the moment I saw it.

What makes this cabin unique

New log cabin yet cozy, rustic, and inviting. All wood everywhere, not a drop of paint or sheetrock to be found. Nestled under a 40 foot sandstone cliff with flanked by block boulders the size of a house. Just steps from a huge rock shelter (the rock house) and Gorilla Rock. The cabin if full of unique Folk Art from all over rural American as well as from my travels.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As my husband said, He brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best surprises I ever had. This place is magic. So many thing to appreciate (the cabin, the design, decoration, camp fire outside, every thing clean, cozy, prepared with so much love!..). The natural beauty surrounding the cabin is just surreal. I barely went to sleep. The excitement of being here was great. Now we are leaving I almost feel depressed, I don’t want to go back to reality but also a feeling of joy and hope we will come back soon!

I live in Stanford, KY but I’m originally from Sad Paulo, Brazil and this is one of the most beautiful place I visited, love U all, Thanks for everything

Fantastic!

  • 5 of 5

This is a beautiful secluded home. It was a perfect getaway for my family - not too far from Columbus, Ohio - and so close to Natural Bridge trails. My adult children would like to make staying here a regular gathering. Thank you.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much. Big Rock's purpose is to give a great place to escape to for relaxation and enjoy the beauty of nature. I love it when others enjoy it as much as I do. You must come back when the forest turns into a sea of green. Thanks for coming to Kentucky's best kept secret, Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge and staying at Big Rock. John

Comfortable stay in the Kentucky mountains

  • 4 of 5

Our family, 4 adults, enjoyed a lovely 3 night stay over Christmas. Much to our surprise the house was totally decorated for Christmas! The weather was rainy and overcast so we did not venture from the cabin. We did enjoy roasting marshmallows at the outdoor fire ring under the rock ledge. The cabin has all that one needs for sleeping, playing board games, cooking and eating. If it is especially cold you might want to bring extra blankets. It is a well used cabin but comfortable.

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed your stay at Big Rock. Sorry the wintery weather kept you from enjoying the beautiful sights in Red River Gorge and Natural Bridge State Park. The blankets in the cabin seem to get moved around. It seems most of them made there way into the trunk upstairs at the foot of the bed. We'll get them redistributed. I too have noticed the sleeper sofa is getting a bit worn and have moved it high of the list of replacements. Already for this year we have new chairs coming in for the dining area table. Last year we put in new mattresses, bedding, and towels. Just last week we replaced the kitchen cook ware. We are constantly upgrading and decorating the cabin with new but also with old folk art and unique items that sets the charm of Big Rock.
