About the property

Cozy Secluded Log Cabin Tucked Under Towering Cliffs Flanked By Massive Boulders

Nestled under the sandstone bluffs that nature carved out of Rocky Hollow, things are quiet, easy going, and perfect for your holiday away from it all. Here lies Big Rock Log Cabin tucked away in the Kentucky mountains yet only minutes away from Natural Bridge State Park, Red River Gorge and the Daniel Boone National Forest. After a day of fishing, hiking, or rock climbing, Big Rock is a wonderful place to come home to. Relax on a large covered porch complete with comfortable lounge chairs and table. Come ready to grill out on the porch at the gas grill and eat out under the trees at a picnic table nestled up in Big Rock Hollow. Big Rock Log Cabin beckons you to slow down, relax, and enjoy the sights and sounds of nature, all in the comfort of a cozy & well furnished log cabin, or lean back in a lounge chair inside Big Rock’s own rock shelter. Big Rock Cabin is fully furnished with new furniture and antiques, creating a cozy, comfortable feeling. All linens, blankets and towels are furnished so all you need to bring are food, drink, and personal items. Central air and heat will keep you comfortable any time of the year. Big Rock Cabin has a bath and a half plus a Jacuzzi. Do you like to cook? We just finished the new galley style kitchen that is fully furnished with refrigerator, electric stove, dish washer, microwave, toaster oven, coffee pot, and all the utensils you need for cooking, eating, and drinking. Don’t want to cook? During the season Big Rock is only 5 minutes away from great pizza, subs, or a full buffet dinner. That’s the nice thing about Big Rock, it’s close to everything, but when you top the ridge and drive down into Rocky Hollow you are suddenly away from it all. Natural Bridge State Park is only 5 minute drive where you can enjoy hiking trails, swimming pool, fishing lake, or dinner in the resort lodge. Five minutes more and you are in the Red River Gorge Geological Area and the Daniel Boone National Forest with it’s forest and mountain trails leading to huge natural stone arches and fantastic views of cliff lined valleys. You can even enjoy the trails with your dog in the National Forest. This is a wonderful, undiscovered part of nature where you will see breath taking views without hoards of people. There isn’t a stop light for 20 miles. Come to the Kentucky Mountains and stay at Big Rock Log Cabin. This is a family cabin and not for parties so no spring breakers please.

About John Glover

John Glover: Originally an archaeologist but for many years I have dealt in antiquarian books and historic documents with my bookstore Glover's Bookery. I live in downtown Lexington, KY but am a nut for the great outdoors, thus Big Rock was born [my life saver].

Anne Glover: electrical engineer, started with IBM and continued on with Lexmark.

John Glover purchased this cabin in 2005

Why John Glover chose Kentucky

Big Rock is only a hour from Lexington yet located in the most beautiful deep woods natural area in Kentucky surrounded by cliffy wilderness. I bought Big Rock specifically because it is a Log cabin (a must), was unfinished (so I could finish the inside like I wanted), is under the cliff (my golden retrievers don't know what a cliff edge is), the property has interesting features (massive block boulders, a rock house, and gorilla rock), and lastly is close to Natural Bridge and Red River Gorge (Natural Bridge State Park shares a back property line with Big Rock). Fell head over heels for it the moment I saw it.

What makes this cabin unique

New log cabin yet cozy, rustic, and inviting. All wood everywhere, not a drop of paint or sheetrock to be found. Nestled under a 40 foot sandstone cliff with flanked by block boulders the size of a house. Just steps from a huge rock shelter (the rock house) and Gorilla Rock. The cabin is full of unique Folk Art from all over rural American as well as from my travels.

Guestbook comments from the owner

As my husband said, He brought me here for my birthday and it was one of the best surprises I ever had. This place is magic. So many thing to appreciate (the cabin, the design, decoration, camp fire outside, every thing clean, cozy, prepared with so much love!..). The natural beauty surrounding the cabin is just surreal. I barely went to sleep. The excitement of being here was great. Now we are leaving I almost feel depressed, I don’t want to go back to reality but also a feeling of joy and hope we will come back soon!

I live in Stanford, KY but I’m originally from Sad Paulo, Brazil and this is one of the most beautiful place I visited, love U all, Thanks for everything

The perfect cabin in every way!

  • 5 of 5

It will be hard to express everything we loved about our stay at Big Rock Log Cabin but I will try!

Location: On the edge of Natural Bridge and the Red River Gorge. This area is a delight for anyone interested in hiking, rock climbing, geology, archaeology or just the sheer beauty of nature. Absolutely perfect!

Price: Extremely reasonable.

Amenities: We did not lack for anything. Hot water for the jacuzzi was plentiful. Fans and cooling system worked perfectly. Kitchen supplies and spices available for any kind of food prep.

Interior Design: Perfect floor plan for a family or group of friends. The artwork is stunning in it's quality and quantity. One can tell that the owner must be an art collector, historian, archaeologist---or all of the above!

Outdoors: Wow! The cabin sits on some truly beautiful grounds that include a large rock shelter. Just walking and exploring the immediate property is a treat. A fire ring is set up with plenty of seating---marshmallow forks provided!

If you decide to stay here, you are guaranteed a memorable experience. We'll be back!

Owner's Response: Super glad you enjoyed your trip to the Gorge and Natural Bridge. I get a thrill when my guests really enjoy Natural Bridge/Red River Gorge and Big Rock helped make it a memorable trip. This area is truly Kentucky's best kept secret. It is hard to believe a clifty wilderness with huge natural stone bridges, towering cliff faces, and mysterious rock shelters is literally in Lexington's back yard. Look forward to your return. John & Anne

Clean, Comfortable, Close to Everything

  • 5 of 5

My family of three (four, if you include our dog who thinks she is human) enjoyed our stay at Big Rock Log Cabin very much. The cabin was very clean and comfortable with all the necessary amenities. We grilled out at the cabin two nights and found the kitchen had everything we needed for delicious meals. The location of the cabin is truly ideal, close to both natural beauty and great restaurants. We can't wait to return again and explore more of the area. John, thank you for sharing your lovely cabin with us!

Great girls weekend!

  • 5 of 5

2nd time for a girls weekend at big rock. We love the place and the fire pit, everything about it. Just wish it had a ice machine for all the cocktails we enjoyed. We love to get away from the big city and so does our fur family. We will be back soon.

Awesome location!

  • 5 of 5

The fire pit is amazing!!!! Nice and relaxing, but the only complaint for us would be a few pieces of art....( Dantes Inferno in the upstairs restroom )

Owner's Response: Glad you enjoyed Big Rock and it's rock shelter fire pit. It is so special. Ya, the old stump with clay devils in the upstairs toilet closet is unique, it is the artist expression of an Appalachian folk tale she remembers as a child. Big Rock is full of original folk art that I have collected from around the world, most aquire directly from the artist. I enjoy folk art in my cabin because the art reprsents the artist's life experiences.
