About Woody Mason

This is our second home and our vacation paradise, not just a rental income property. We have enjoyed hiking and motorcycling in the area for over 15 years and wanted a more permanant place to stay that felt more like home. We are so very thankful to be able to share our retreat with a joyful heart.

Please enjoy Stoneybrook Cottage as much as we do!

Woody Mason purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Woody Mason chose Tennessee

After looking at other properties is East Tennessee and western North Carolina, we discovered what is locally known as the Rock House. It was built by a local lumber / saw-mill baron in the 1950's for his personal retreat. It was then and is now truly unique. There is a calming influence permeating the cottage, allowing us to relax and re-charge from our busy schedules. We enjoy hiking for recreation and there are many trails to explore close by. We are also avid motorcyclists and this area provides so many great riding experiences and sightseeing opportunities that we haven't made a dent in them so far. Many vacation homes are newly constructed log cabins, sometimes built in almost cookie-cutter, sub-division fashion. Stoneybrook Cottage stands alone and it has the comforting feeling of returning home each time we arrive.

What makes this cottage unique

Stoneybrook Cottage is also a bird watchers paradise. We have feeders for our many bird visitors and bird watchers alike. Humming birds abound along with more varieties than I can count.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Woody,

Our stay in the cottage was wonderful. We could open up the windows in the bedroom, the bathroom and the kitchen and didn't have to turn on the air-conditioner which enabled us to go to sleep and wake up with the the birds and frogs Everything was clean. We would like to compliment you for the way the cottage has been taken care of. Everything we needed was there-you didn't forget anything! We hope we can return next year.

Stoney Brook Labor Day 2016

  • 5 of 5

What a perfect get away! The cabin was clean and neat with perfect accommodations. We were able to enjoy the peaceful view from the front porch while enjoying the fire in the fire pit. The owner was very mindful in anticipating the occupants needs. We had a bbq grill to use and firewood was provided for the fire pit. We will definitely be back!

Great quiet, secluded and comfortable lodging in the Appalachian foothills.

  • 5 of 5

We are from Franklin and were on a weekend getaway to East Tennessee and the mountains. We wanted someplace far from the traffic and crowds of Gatlinburg but close enough to the high country for sightseeing and hiking. Stony Brook Cottage met and exceeded all of our requirements. With everything from BBQ grills to rockers on the porch to trails down to a small stream across the road, the Cottage has all the modern conveniences including satellite TV, central AVHC and entertainment tables in the front and back yard.

We plan on a return visit soon and would recommend it to anyone looking for a laid back getaway in the mountains.

Perfect spot for a Mother/Daughter Getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My mother and I stayed at Stoneybrook Cottage over the Memorial Day weekend for a short but much needed mother/daughter getaway. We absolutely loved the cottage! We were exited to find it sparkling clean, decorated with unique antique furniture with fun touches like antique hats, a pipe holder and antique pictures and fully stocked with everything we could need in the kitchen. The bedrooms are beautiful and very comfortable. The pillows in the master bedroom are the most comfortable I have ever slept on (we plan to buy a set for our own beds!). The bathroom was clean as well. The wireless internet works great although we didn't need use it much choosing to enjoy each other's company instead. We visited the nearby Ingles grocery store for weekend grocery supplies and made ourselves at home for our stay. We watched movies and ate dinner in the living room both nights (thanks for the easy-to-follow DVD instructions) and also made great use of the rocking chairs on the front porch for late night chats and breakfast coffee. We didn't have time to build a fire but there are two perfect spots for it if weather and time allow. There are little touches all around the cottage that make this such a special place. We shared our time on the porch with a bird nesting her eggs on a specially made perch and enjoyed the view of the mountains in the distance as we sat and peacefully spent our time together. This is a wonderful place that is comfortable and clean and much like staying at home and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to stay in the area. Tourist attractions like the Lost Sea Adventure, the Ocoee River and Hiwassee River are close yet far enough away to allow for peace and quiet during all hours of the day. We drove into Tellico Plains and enjoyed the bakery for breakfast and Tellico Cats for a lovely lunch overlooking the river. We plan to be back as soon as we can schedule another trip. Thank you for helping us make some very special memories!

Peaceful, quiet, relaxing

  • 5 of 5

This was our second visit to Stonybrook Cottage, and it felt like coming home. As before, it was sparkling clean and equipped with everything we could possibly need. The location is convenient and very quiet and peaceful. The weather could not have been better. We especially enjoyed the fireplace on cool mornings, and sitting outside in the rocking chairs or swings listening to the birds on warm afternoons and evenings. A wren had a nest on the porch, and we were entertained watching the parents bring food to the babies. There is plenty to do in the area, but if you just want a restful vacation where you can relax and unwind, Stonybrook is the place to be.

Perfect mountain home away from home!

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed in the cottage for a long birthday weekend and couldn't have been more happy with our stay. The house is so well equipped with everything you need, we didn't have to get anything but groceries! There are tons of cozy little places inside and outside to get comfortable with a good book and a cup of coffee. Also, the beds are extremely comfy! I can't recommend it enough.

An Okay Stay

  • 4 of 5

My rating falls between 3 & 4 stars at 3.5. The property the house is located on is probably more worth the stay than the actual house. I fell in love with the fire pit, the swing, the porch, the stream on the property. Unfortunately it was too cold for me to be able to sit outside and enjoy any of it. I would more recommend a stay here during the spring or summer, unless you are someone who like the cold and could tolerate enjoying these amenities in the colder months.

The house itself is average. There were many places in the house where paint needed to be redone and molding needed to be replaced. There were a ton of lady bugs - not only live ones walking around, but dead ones piled up on windowsills and behind furniture. We also were not able to use the gas fireplace during our stay as it was not working. The owner offered to have someone come out to look at it, but we declined as we were already settled in. The floors slant badly and I am prone to dizziness, so I had to hold on while walking in the kitchen or hallway. Additionally, there are a LOT of deodorizers in the house. When you first enter, it smells lovely, but soon becomes very overpowering. Additionally, the living room and back bedroom never got warm. It didn't matter what the heat was set at, we were always freezing.

My biggest issue was that the listing states you are *less than an hour* from Gatlinburg. That is really the only reason we booked this house (Gatlinburg was booked solid). As soon as I was sent the address to the house (after booking), I jumped on Google to see how far it was and Google stated it would take about 1 hour and 40 minutes to 2 hours to get to Gatlinburg. Because I booked this expecting about a 45 minute drive and really had a nearly two hour drive (one way), we never did make it to Gatlinburg, which, sadly was our whole reason for the trip. We could not fathom spending four hours in the car everyday to get back and forth to Gatlinburg.

I will say that a few days prior to our stay, the owner contacted me to say the previous renters left a horrid mess and he wasn't sure it would be ready for us, but the cleaning personnel worked tirelessly to get it ready, which I am so thankful for so I didn't have to find a new place on such short notice.

Additionally, I am always thankful when my dogs are allowed.

Last note - if you love the stars like my husband and I do, but live in the city (or near city lights), they are amazing here!
