About Woody Mason

This is our second home and our vacation paradise, not just a rental income property. We have enjoyed hiking and motorcycling in the area for over 15 years and wanted a more permanant place to stay that felt more like home. We are so very thankful to be able to share our retreat with a joyful heart.

Please enjoy Stoneybrook Cottage as much as we do!

Woody Mason purchased this cottage in 2004

Why Woody Mason chose Tennessee

After looking at other properties is East Tennessee and western North Carolina, we discovered what is locally known as the Rock House. It was built by a local lumber / saw-mill baron in the 1950's for his personal retreat. It was then and is now truly unique. There is a calming influence permeating the cottage, allowing us to relax and re-charge from our busy schedules. We enjoy hiking for recreation and there are many trails to explore close by. We are also avid motorcyclists and this area provides so many great riding experiences and sightseeing opportunities that we haven't made a dent in them so far. Many vacation homes are newly constructed log cabins, sometimes built in almost cookie-cutter, sub-division fashion. Stoneybrook Cottage stands alone and it has the comforting feeling of returning home each time we arrive.

What makes this cottage unique

Stoneybrook Cottage is also a bird watchers paradise. We have feeders for our many bird visitors and bird watchers alike. Humming birds abound along with more varieties than I can count.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Woody,

Our stay in the cottage was wonderful. We could open up the windows in the bedroom, the bathroom and the kitchen and didn't have to turn on the air-conditioner which enabled us to go to sleep and wake up with the the birds and frogs Everything was clean. We would like to compliment you for the way the cottage has been taken care of. Everything we needed was there-you didn't forget anything! We hope we can return next year.

Adorable little cottage in the hills

  • 5 of 5

We loved this quaint little cottage in the hills. We had zero cell phone service at the cottage, which worked out perfectly for us. No annoying calls or texts distracting us from our family time! And I mean that sincerely, not sarcastically. The cottage itself was charming and cozy. Felt comfortable and safe for the entire stay. Would definitely stay again if we travel to TN again in the future. Beautiful countryside with amazing hospitality!

Owner's Response: We are always grateful that folks share their good times at our little piece of heaven and enjoy the peace and quiet the same way that we do. Sharing Stoneybrook Cottage with vacationing families is one of the best side benefits of ownership. Come back again any time. The door is always open.

Charming and quirky maybe, but ......

  • 3 of 5

The cottage was clean and quaintly decorated and yes, the floors definitely slope throughout due to foundation settling. We were there to ride our motorcycle so didn't spend most of the day at the cottage. Bed was very comfy, but please spend some money on fixing the shower/tub appearance. A little TLC would go a long way in the bathroom. The shower walls are swollen from moisture build up behind the masonite and the caulking looked old around base so wouldn't look clean. The bath mat left in the tub had black spots all over it so we didn't bother to use it. Scoured the tub as best I could although it seemed etched into the floor of the tub. The gas grill was in terrible shape and unusable, totally rusted out interior. Hopefully this will be replaced or removed from the listing.

3 stars because we did enjoy sitting on the porch swing watching the hummingbirds play in the morning with coffee or late afternoon with cocktails and we slept well while there after riding for 6-7 hours a day. Good location to access many nice rides. The weather was absolutely perfect.

Owner's Response: Thanks JoAnn for the review and critique. It's always good to have a little criticism to keep things sharp and up to date. I'll have a conversation with my maintenance folks and get things more ship shape. With that said, I find it interesting that for the price of a 2-3 star motel room with nothing but a bed and a TV, folks expect the Ritz and get an entire house with two comfortable beds, a fully equipped kitchen, washer-dryer and entertainment and a great view from the front porch. Most guests seem to enjoy the funkiness of a 65 year old stone cottage for what it is, not so much for what they expect. Our website states an outdoor grill & BBQ grill is provided, and it is, yet, a past guest wanted a gas grill and didn't want to carry it home so they left it as a gift. Apparentl;y it needs to go away. The charcoal grill is available for use and in very good shape, however, the gas grill will probably be scrapped. Oh, well!? The weather was good, the riding was excellent; what more could you want? We're glad you enjoyed yourselves and do hope you come back again because we've enjoyed sharing our little piece of peace and quiet with riders and vacationers throughout the years and we aspire to do better each and every day.

nice old cottage in rural location

  • 5 of 5

Defiantly enjoyed my 2 day stay at the cottage. Peaceful !!

perfect place to retreat to after a day in the mountains, light a camp fire and relax.

only issue is a little mildew smell in the cottage and a little funky around the bath tub - considering the age of the place i think thats its par for the course, only mention it for those that may be allergic to mildew/mold.

would recommend it to friends !!!

A Snowbird's Dream

  • 5 of 5

While staying at this charming cottage, my sister and I were able to explore the area and test out the Tennessee winter. Everyone said that this winter was a mild one. It only snowed once during the two-month stay. It was the perfect jumping off point to finding a retirement home in the area. People in the area were warm and welcoming. When my sister joined me we were able to find a house in 5 weeks and handle many of the reality and banking needs. It was just the small town atmosphere we were looking for with many local sites within easy driving distance. Pigeon Forge is an hour and a half north and Chatanooga is the same distance south. The Cherohala Skyway which starts in Tellico Plains is only minutes away so you are nestled in the foothills of the Smokies.

The only drawback that we experienced was that there was no cell phone reception and the Internet connection was slow and spotty. Since this was not the main purpose of our visit we were able to adjust and make our calls when we were in town and the public libraries in the area have Internet access if you need better speed and steady connection.

Overall we had a wonderful stay and would highly recommend this cottage to family and friends. Whether you are looking for a weekend or a longer stay this is the place to visit if you want to explore Eastern Tennessee.
