Comfy Apartment In Guanajuato - In historic downtown, 200+ years old

Bedrooms 1
Space 500 sq. ft.
Property type apartment
Minimum Stay 5 - 6 nights

About the property

1 Bedroom apartment, street level, town center. Spend a week or a few months!

This colonial era apartment is part of the larger House in Guanajuato (available for larger parties, please ask) but has its own private entrance. The location is inside the UNESCO World Heritage zone, just a few blocks from the Plaza de la Paz, Teatro Juarez, plazas Los Angeles and San Fernando. Theaters, restaurants, museums, shopping and ATMs are within easy walking distance.

The apartment features the high wood beamed ceilings and 3' thick stone walls typical of 18th century construction, updated with modern comforts. All materials used in the renovation were hand made and sourced locally, the tile, stone and wood bring the essence of colonial Mexico into the apartment. The apartment is a short walk up from Alonso, a local taxi can take you via "Cerro de Gallo" to within about 30 feet of the door. Visitors who have problems with stairs will appreciate the street level entrance, and the ability to walk to the main plazas and attractions with very few stair steps required.

The bedroom sleeps two on a full (double) sized bed, with bedside lamps to read by. Extra blankets and a heated mattress pad will ward off the chill in even the coldest weather. The living room couch pulls out into a sofa bed suitable for children. A small but functional equipped kitchen allows you to prepare meals at home, though the many local options for eating out from street food to fine dining will tempt you to let someone else do the cooking. The spacious living/dining room makes a great place to study and relax while taking in the sounds of this most romantic of cities.

The apartment is ideal for stays of a week or more. Daily maid service available for extra charge.

Please note that Guanajuato is not a driving town. If you are planning to arrive by car, I can give you advice on where to park, and how to get to the property. The good news is once you are in, you will not need your car again until you are ready to leave! If you are flying into Leon/Guanajuato, I can help arrange transportation from the airport to the apartment.

If you need more room, contact me for availability of the House in Guanajuato.

About Steven Haskett

I'm a software engineer who was born in Texas, and lived on 3 continents before settling back in the US. I split my time between Mexico and Austin. I love learning and sharing the history of my adopted home town. I've made the trip from Austin to Guanajuato just about every way imaginable, from the 'cheap' bus to piloting a small private plane. I'm happy to share what I've learned about living and travelling in Mexico.

Steven Haskett purchased this apartment in 2005

Why Steven Haskett chose Zona Centro

We had three criteria when we were looking for this property. Mexican colonial silver city, close to downtown, and access to modern communications and infrastructure. We were able to find all of this and more in this property. We traveled throughout central Mexico, but we kept coming back to Guanajuato. A true walking town, it condenses everything you could need into a compact city center.

What makes this apartment unique

We were looking for a home in one of Mexico's colonial cities. I love the European feel, and the uniqueness of a walking town, where everything you need from the corner produce shop to the symphony are within a 10 minute walk. A place where music comes to you. A place where you meet and chat (en Español) with neighbors and local shopkeepers as you see them daily as you walk to and from the apartment.

Beautiful Colonial home and fantastic location!

  • 5 of 5

I have visited the town of Guanajuato many times over the years, and this rental property is by far the most beautiful place I've ever stayed in. I love architecture, and I was in awe of the beauty and intricate detail of this renovated, colonial home. The view of Guanajuato, its university and churches, is spectacular from the rooftop terrace of this property.

The location is excellent! It takes three minutes to walk to the main town square/garden, el Jardin Union, and another two minutes to walk to the University of Guanajuato. You do not need a car!! Restaurants, cafes, bars, stores, ATM machines, post office, theatres, museums and artisan shops are just a few minutes away, by foot. The streets and alleyways (callejones) are cobblestoned and clean. I must say that Guanajuato has become one of the cleanest towns I've ever visited, and I felt completely safe staying here. If you want a serenade, make sure you go to the Jardin Union, a beautiful garden area in the center of town. Mariachi bands are scattered about, nearby the restaurants, ready to play music and sing for you! In the evening, in the same area, you can join the local Estudiantina, a musical band, as they walk through the streets and callejones of Guanajuato.

When I return to Guanajuato next time, I'm planning to book this property again. I was delighted to find this place. The owner was easy to communicate with and was very helpful setting up transportation to and from the airport for us. It really was the most enjoyable vacation that I have had in years. Gracias!!

Fantastic Location

  • 5 of 5

We spent a week enjoying GTO and this guesthouse was in the perfect spot to explore everything. We were just far enough off the path where the local singing tours that pass by were not keeping us up at night, yet close enough to drop into the center quickly. The house was beautiful and very comfortable. Steven's recommendations for food (local cheapie and higher end) were awesome! We really loved our entire experience and owe it to our choice in guest houses!

Four Months in Guanajuato

  • 5 of 5

I spent four months last year living in GTO. This apartment was perfect. The space is nicely decorated and comfortable. It is located in the center of the city, is very safe, and has easy access to all the wonderful places in Guanajuato. The owner was easy to work with and was quick to respond via email. I would definitely stay here again. Salud!

The apartment is better than the pictures. It's in a fabulous neighborhood and close to everything.

  • 5 of 5

Our holiday started off great with our host Mary meeting us at the airport. Mary has a lot of history of Guanajuato and was very informative. The apartment was perfect. The kitchen has everything you will need if you choose to cook. There are so many wonderful restaurants that we didn't cook as much as we thought we wood. It's the perfect location close to everything. Enjoyed the traveling minstrels that come around in the evening. Every week there seemed to be a holiday, parade or something fun going on. We usually go somewhere different every year, but we enjoyed our seven weeks there so much that I think we will return next year. If you stay here you will not be disappointed.

Wonderful location

  • 4 of 5

This apartment is in a wonderful location -- just a short walk to Plaza de Los Angles where the people watching was great day or night. It is close to everything. It has everything you could need -- although we did not cook much. Do understand that there are strolling minstrels every night, which we found delightful, but others could find noisy. This is a noisy area, so if you are looking for quiet, perhaps not for you. Some written instructions on some things in the apartment would be useful -- how to get hot water, using the drinking water, lighting the stove and a few other things in the kitchen would be helpful. The hosts, if they are there, are helpful and friendly and really watched out for us. Could not have been a better choice.

Living in Guanajuato - felt like a home of our own

  • 5 of 5

We loved our apartment ! it is so centrally located - nice surroundings inside and so much to see and do in Guanajuato ! Museums and art and shopping...its a very wonderful city. Plus, having a real kitchen, we got to feel like locals...going to market and shopping for food and cooking ! it was great ! And when you feel like eating out ! great restaurants, just a short walk away. The roof top garden was really nice, for sitting and reading and just getting some sun. One thing that was great - was the walk around town with the strolling minstrels - it was super ! The apartment was clean and neat. We definitely want to return !! One week is too short to see everything we wanted to...the house and museum of Diego Rivera, and riding the bus out to La Valencia, an old mining town...seeing the Churches lit up at night and all the people out and about, listening to the mariachis...so many memories in a short time ! we will return. And yes a real internet connection ! that worked all the time !!

Dozens within walking distance.

This is a great city for concerts, chamber music, art and history. Troubadours roam the alleyways, check the posters at the Plaza de la Paz and the Jardin de la Reunion for performance schedules. You'll want to see a performance in the spectacular Teatro Juarez. I saw the Chicago Symphony perform there in 2012 during the Cervantino Festival which occurs each October.
