Random Scoots is located in Keene, NY, in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks region. We have offered guided hikes in the region since 2004. In 2008 we introduced our first cabin - Random Scoots Cabin (VRBO listing #181716). We are now proud to offer our newest cabin - Mercy Cabin. So whether you are looking for convenient access to the multitude of activities and attractions available in the region or simply want a quiet place to relax and get away from it all, Random Scoots and Mercy Cabins will serve your needs.
Mercy Cabin is 1280 square feet, including the main room (kitchen, dining nook, and living room), 3 large bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. A loft provides extra sleeping space for older children. And no need to clutter the living space with all your gear. Between the large mudroom inside the cabin and the large side porch you'll find plenty of room for gear storage and drying.
All interior walls and cathedral ceilings are finished in 12' wide pine boards. Plenty of large windows and sliding doors. The result is a spacious, warm, bright, and charming interior atmosphere very much in keeping with the wooded setting. Our guests refer to Mercy as a 'luxury cabin', combining the charm of a cabin and the luxuries of home.
Our location, 1/2 mile off Rte 73 on a private road, is accessible yet remarkably quiet. Situated on a wooded property, the grounds around the cabins transition from a well kept lawn to open woods with maintained native ground cover to a managed woodlot, resulting in an open and inviting atmosphere. The location features spectacular views across the valley to Hurricane Mountain and surrounding peaks, with glimpses of Giant and Dix Mountains. Sound effects are provided by the gentle murmur of the Ausable River East Branch in the valley below.
The centerpiece of the region is the Adirondack High Peaks, where hundreds of miles of foot trails provide access to the rugged beauty of the mountain interior. Outdoor activities in the region include hiking, snowshoeing, back-country and cross-country skiing, mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, trail running, wildlife viewing, flat water and whitewater paddling, hunting, fishing... the list goes on and on, limited only by your imagination. For those with less ambitious goals, or on rest days, Lake Placid and the surrounding region offer a multitude of relaxing and interesting attractions and activities. A sampling -
- Lake Placid: Home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games
- Tupper Lake: The Wild Center (Regional Natural History Museum)
- Blue Mountain Lake: Adirondack Museum (Regional Human/Cultural History Museum)
- Whiteface Mountain: The Olympic mountain is a short 15 mile drive.
It is no wonder that generations of outdoor enthusiasts have been drawn to the rugged beauty of the Adirondack Region. Visionary legislation that established the Adirondack Park in 1892 initiated a tradition of conservation aimed at ensuring that this critical natural resource be preserved. It is incumbent on today's users of the resource to carry on that tradition. We at Random Scoots believe that by responsibly enjoying our public lands today we can ensure that the same opportunities will be available for future generations.
We further believe that development of the intimate and respectful relationship with nature that is so important to our future begins in childhood, and we strive to create a family friendly atmosphere, a comfortable and enjoyable retreat where parents can nurture this relationship in their children. In keeping with that goal our rate structure is designed to encourage families.

We were a tad reluctant to venture out of our comfort zone but change is good. The Adirondacks are always home to our retreats but we kind of got in a rut and needed to break out. So, In our case change was fantastic! Our annual girls getaway, it really couldn't have been a better weekend. The cabin was perfect! Spacious, clean, very tastefully decorated. Don't fret about the long uphill drive as it was very well maintained. Can't wait to return. Thank you Tom and Doreen for making your visions a reality! Enjoyed everything.
It really doesn't get much better than this. The cabin was extremely well designed, clean, modern, and lovely. Incredibly peaceful and gorgeous location. This was absolutely one of our favorite rentals ever and our only complaint is that we couldn't stay longer.
Tom was extremely helpful and communicative before our arrival and during our stay. He helped us find great climbs and trails in the area and they even provide great day packs for hiking.
In short, we loved this place. Don't think we would ever book anywhere else in High Peaks region.
We found everything we needed at this cabin. Clean, well stocked, and very comfortable. 4 adults, 2 teenagers, and 2 dogs were all very happy for the long weekend. Will return. The road was well plowed but we were very happy to have 4wd/awd vehicles to get up the hill.
This was our second stay at Mercy Cabin and the stay was just as magical as the first. The cabin is close to everything including shopping in Lake Placid, hiking the high peaks, and we even stumbled upon a farmers market down the road during our stay. There is a beautiful deck to sit on and grill on which was great for the little bit of rain we encountered. The cabin is beyond beautifully decorated. My husband and I loved the bathtub so much that we remoded our own bathroom and purchased one ourselves. We even loved the sheets so much that we bought a set ourselves today (no kidding they were sooooo soft!). The cabin this year even had a Roku Box and Netflix. We even noticed the internet was quicker than the last time. To stay anywhere else you would just be robbing yourself of the most awesome Adirondack experience you could ever have...so look no further and book Mercy Cabin during your next Adirondack stay.
For those who had reservations on the Rd in the winter we stayed in January 2013 it was in great shape. No problems at all. Loved our stay there.

Wow. This place truly is a gem.
Set off a private road in Keene, this property is more than you would ever expect. The cabin is pretty new. It features three bedrooms and a loft. You can easily fit 12 people here to sleep here although during my stay there was only my husband and I. It features two bathrooms, plenty of sliding glass doors with mountain views, two decks, a fire pit, gas grill, plenty of ceiling fans inside, gas fireplace, and a nice Samsung laundry set.
Did I mention the place even allows pets?! Although my dog hiked with us and didn't really get to enjoy the cabin, she did however enjoy the outside of the cabin and the owners friendly dogs. She also enjoyed the deck with a giant rock that she could climb on top of.
There is no maid service here and you are expected to keep the property clean. This was no problem being the property had a ton of items to keep the place clean like home. There is an age requirement here for renting which helps keep out a ton of the younger crowd that just wants to party.
The owners did not go cheap when building this property and it shows. Kraftmaid cabinets (yes the ones with the slow close doors), deep Kohler tubs (my only complaint is I do not know the style of this tub because I want to buy it for myself!), beautiful vessel sinks, leather furniture, Pella energy saving sliding glass doors, and energy star rated Samsung laundry.
The road was steep getting to the property and I do not know how this will play out in the winter. There was some loose gravel and our Kia Rio 5 spun out a few times trying to get traction. There are signs that do note to use four wheel drive to make it up the hill to the property. There was no cellphone signal here for AT&T. My husband did however get service through Verizon. There is internet available on site. This was not a surprise being we are minutes away from the 46 high peaks. With all the hiking around and Lake Placid being down the street, who needs a cell phone anyways?
This place truly is heaven. There is no other property in the area that features all that Mercy Cabin has to offer. I visit Lake Placid 2 to 3 times a year. I can honestly say that I will be returning again, and Mercy Cabin will be my lodging of choice!
