LATE FALL SPECIAL RATES - Check them out!!

Random Scoots is located in Keene, NY, in the heart of the Adirondack High Peaks region. We have offered guided hikes in the region since 2004. In 2008 we introduced our first cabin - Random Scoots Cabin (VRBO listing #181716). We are now proud to offer our newest cabin - Mercy Cabin. So whether you are looking for convenient access to the multitude of activities and attractions available in the region or simply want a quiet place to relax and get away from it all, Random Scoots and Mercy Cabins will serve your needs.

Mercy Cabin:

Mercy Cabin is 1280 square feet, including the main room (kitchen, dining nook, and living room), 3 large bedrooms and 2 full bathrooms. A loft provides extra sleeping space for older children. And no need to clutter the living space with all your gear. Between the large mudroom inside the cabin and the large side porch you'll find plenty of room for gear storage and drying.

All interior walls and cathedral ceilings are finished in 12' wide pine boards. Plenty of large windows and sliding doors. The result is a spacious, warm, bright, and charming interior atmosphere very much in keeping with the wooded setting. Our guests refer to Mercy as a 'luxury cabin', combining the charm of a cabin and the luxuries of home.

The Property:

Our location, 1/2 mile off Rte 73 on a private road, is accessible yet remarkably quiet. Situated on a wooded property, the grounds around the cabins transition from a well kept lawn to open woods with maintained native ground cover to a managed woodlot, resulting in an open and inviting atmosphere. The location features spectacular views across the valley to Hurricane Mountain and surrounding peaks, with glimpses of Giant and Dix Mountains. Sound effects are provided by the gentle murmur of the Ausable River East Branch in the valley below.

The Region:

The centerpiece of the region is the Adirondack High Peaks, where hundreds of miles of foot trails provide access to the rugged beauty of the mountain interior. Outdoor activities in the region include hiking, snowshoeing, back-country and cross-country skiing, mountaineering, rock and ice climbing, trail running, wildlife viewing, flat water and whitewater paddling, hunting, fishing... the list goes on and on, limited only by your imagination. For those with less ambitious goals, or on rest days, Lake Placid and the surrounding region offer a multitude of relaxing and interesting attractions and activities. A sampling -

- Lake Placid: Home of the 1932 and 1980 Winter Olympic Games

- Tupper Lake: The Wild Center (Regional Natural History Museum)

- Blue Mountain Lake: Adirondack Museum (Regional Human/Cultural History Museum)

- Whiteface Mountain: The Olympic mountain is a short 15 mile drive.

Our Philosophy:

It is no wonder that generations of outdoor enthusiasts have been drawn to the rugged beauty of the Adirondack Region. Visionary legislation that established the Adirondack Park in 1892 initiated a tradition of conservation aimed at ensuring that this critical natural resource be preserved. It is incumbent on today's users of the resource to carry on that tradition. We at Random Scoots believe that by responsibly enjoying our public lands today we can ensure that the same opportunities will be available for future generations.

We further believe that development of the intimate and respectful relationship with nature that is so important to our future begins in childhood, and we strive to create a family friendly atmosphere, a comfortable and enjoyable retreat where parents can nurture this relationship in their children. In keeping with that goal our rate structure is designed to encourage families.

Great place to stay

  • 5 of 5

We had a great stay at Mercy Cabin. It was big and very clean. There is a nice deck and fire pit out back. It is also in a great location, many places to hike near by and only a short drive to Lake Placid. We would definitely stay there again!

Weekend Getaway

  • 5 of 5

Great venue for a weekend getaway with friends. Perfect amount of space and great backyard and kitchen area! Close enough to Lake Placid and all the hiking trails to make a day trip and then return to the cabin afterwards. Will definitely stay again and refer to others!

Perfect Adirondack Escape!!

  • 5 of 5

What an enjoyable place to stay! It was tastefully decorated, spotless and equipped with everything we needed for cooking and relaxing. The privacy was great too, very quiet and peaceful. My wife commented immediately how the pictures on-line did not do this property justice, truly a great place. We were traveling with two of our dogs and having the privacy was a plus!!! Excellent location also, just minutes to great hiking trails, access to some fantastic roads for cycling and a very short trip to the Lake Placid downtown area. Couldn't wish for a nicer place to stay. When we come back to the area, and we definitely will, our first choice will be the Mercy Cabin.

Centrally located in the high peaks

  • 5 of 5

With the location in Keene this place is the ideal luxury base camp to most of the eastern high peaks. Quiet and serene, first rate facilities and provisions to hike, bike, climb, while enjoying the off activity time. Or relax and read or study maps. This place has it all

Beautiful cabin in an amazing area

  • 5 of 5

The cabin was so clean and had everything you could possibly need while there. The pictures don't capture how beautiful this home really is in person. We had good TV and Wi-Fi just no AT&T cell service in most of the town.

Perfect weekend getaway!

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I have been staying at Mercy since 2011. This trip, like every other one before it, was simply perfect.

Most of our stays were in the summer (mainly to hike the Adirondack 46) and we realized that the "off season" is even better. There is still a ton to do and the crowds are less, plus we love the snow!

We bring all our food (so we don't have to spend time grocery shopping while in the beautiful Adirondacks!) and the well-stocked kitchen has everything we could think of. The dining table seats 6, although for this trip it was just the two of us. There are two couches and comfy chairs for relaxing in the living room. It was too cold for this trip, but during the summer we spend most nights out by the fire pit where Tom conveniently leaves wood for the fire. There is also a propane grill on the back deck that we use often. (And Tom always leaves a "starter pack" of dark roast coffee, which was a life saver for those times we forgot to pack our coffee.)

The mud room is undersold here -- if you're into hiking, climbing, skiing, snowboarding, or other outdoor activity, there are ample hooks for hanging (or drying) gear, along with two benches and a decent space for putting everything on or off. There's even a boot drier and some spare backpacks!

Everything is immaculately clean every time we arrive, this time was no exception.

Tom and Doreen are perfect hosts, there if you need them but not if you don't. The cabin is tucked away so that we had as much privacy as we wanted. We've had as many as 8 people with us over the years, but we also like trips like this where it is just the two of us.

Mercy Cabin is really a home away from home.

Owner's Response: What a wonderful review. Thank you so much! I do want to make one small correction. The dining table does have a leaf, so it can accommodate 8 people. You've been here so many times, I'm surprised you hadn't noticed that! There is also a small table on the deck which seats 4 more, and can easily be moved inside if the weather demands. Doreen and I look forward to seeing you many more times in the coming years!
